Yu may have heard the name “Michelin” because it’s related t Michelin tires. The tire prducers Andre and Eduard Michelin created smething called a “Michelin Guide” in 1900. It was riginally meant as a guide specifically fr France, utlining all f the travel destinatins and why yu shuld visit them, and thus encuraging peple t buy cars, which meant mre tire sales.
This guide included gas statins, repair shps, and ntable restaurants. The Michelin Guide began t cver all srts f Eurpean and Nrth African cuntries, but then, the First Wrld War hit and prductin stpped. After the war, thugh, the Michelin brthers adapted the guide and began charging fr it. This adapted guide included htel listings. It remved advertising and then began t actually categrize and rate restaurants.
By the year 1936, they had finalized their three-star standards that they wuld award t restaurants. One Michelin star was classified as “a very gd restaurant in its categry”. Tw Michelin stars meant “excellent cking, wrth a detur (迂回)”. And lastly, three Michelin stars meant “exceptinal cuisine, wrth a special jurney”.
Nw, there are Michelin Guides fr 23 cuntries. Michelin hires undercver reviewers called “inspectrs” that travel t restaurants secretly and decide their categry. These inspectrs are nt even allwed t disclse t their parents their actual line f wrk, since parents will likely feel hnred and shw it ff. S the number f inspectrs that actually exist is unpublicized.
T get a three-star rating isn’t always a gd thing, thugh. A few restaurants have asked Michelin t take back their star rating. Fr example, Petersham Nurseries Cafe in Lndn gt a star in 2011, but peple visiting expected a frmal dining experience and unrealistic expectatins f what the restaurant really was. Sme restaurants in Japan als turned it dwn because they wuldn’t be able t keep up their quality f fd with such a fierce jump in ppularity.
Everything must be perfect. Nt gd nt excellent — perfect. These are the abslute bare basics f the Michelin star system: sme histry and sme highlights.
24. What is the riginal purpse f making Michelin Guide?
A. T prmte the cmpany’s tire sales
B. T ppularize sme fascinating htels.
C. T develp turism industry in France.
D. T regularize the reference n restaurants.

26. Which f the fllwing best describes an inspectr?
A. Rmantic.B. Mysterius.C. Respectable.D. Prmising.
27. Why d sme restaurants give up their Michelin star rating?
A. They are fed up with the crwded custmers.
B. The Michelin star rating ruins their reputatins.
C. There are sme drawbacks in the Michelin star system.
D. They can’t live up t the expectatins f the custmers.

The majrity f plastic that pllutes ur planet’s ceans desn’t flat n the surface, but rather underneath the waves. This makes tracking and mnitring the prblematic rubbish using technlgy like satellites challenging fr researchers. But a new system f supercmputer-pwered search prgram culd help enable satellites fr the task. With additinal research and fine tuning, it has becme a valuable tl in tackling the glbal issue.
As detailed in a study published n June 14 in Nature Cmmunicatins, a prject trained a machine-learning prgram n 300, 000 imagery f the Mediterranean Sea gathered ver six years by the Eurpean Space Agency’s Cpernicus Sentinel-2 satellite. The team then used this database t identify what are knwn as windrws — flating filaments (丝状物) cmpsed f garbage and plastic frmed by cean currents and wind.
Windrws, frequently shrt-lived structures, can extend fr miles befre spreading int the cean. While windrws nly accunt fr an extremely small prtin f verall cean litter, researchers therized the rubbish culd serve as prxies fr pllutin htspts. Between July 2015 and September 2021, the team detected and mnitred a ttal f 14, 374 windrws — an expnential (指数的) increase in dcumented litter structures. Many f the windrws psitined by satellite images were then subsequently checked by ships in the regin. In ttal, the pllutin is estimated t have cvered 94. 5 square kilmeters, an area equal t rughly 7, 500 sccer fields.
Further analyses allwed the team t infer a number f influences, such as nearby ppulatin distributin, gegraphy, and rainfall, n where and when cean litter piles up. A regin that frequently experiences heavy rain mre ften carries garbage ut int the water, where castal desert areas may cntribute far less. These htspts are als primarily lcated within 15 km f a cast and frequently return t shre within the fllwing weeks r mnths.
“Ocean litter mirrrs the failures f ur civilizatin t manage waste,” the team writes in their study. “Satellite-based bservatins are ne f the best hpes fr large-scale mnitring.”
28. What challenge d researchers face cncerning cean pllutin?
A. The hidden plastic.B. The unstable currents.
C. The fund shrtage.D. The inadequate satellites.

C. T prve the team’s inference.D. T intrduce anther influence.

When discussins are getting heated, divisins n pinins ptentially lead t sme awkward mments. This causes many f us t struggle with hw t cnvince peple t change their minds and hw t argue ur side effectively. Unfrtunately, we’ve already becme quite divided.
One study shwed that when peple receive infrmatin against their beliefs, their brains aren’t as active as when they receive infrmatin that cnfirms their beliefs. Humans have a well- dcumented bias (偏见) called the “cnfirmatin bias”, which is a tendency t seek ut infrmatin that cnfirms ur existing views and t avid infrmatin that discnfirms them.
Thrwing data at peple isn’t at all effective in changing minds and especially hearts. Instead, peple just find it super annying. Luckily, research has prvided sme guidance abut best practices, and, nt surprisingly, they all suggest what ur parents have been telling us fr decades: Yu catch mre flies with hney than with vinegar. In fact, it turns ut that instead f citing why yu are right and smene else is wrng in a heated cnversatin, ne f the mst effective strategies yu can use fr changing smene’s mind is t find areas where yu agree.
Anther thing we can d is t be pen t ther perspectives (观点) . We can start by acknwledging ur wn cnfirmatin bias and making a cnscius effrt t verride it. We can als try t take ther peple’s perspectives. And better yet — ask them fr it. Ask them why they feel the way they d and what wuld change their mind. Be pen t admitting that yu culd be wrng and make it easy fr thers t admit their wn mistakes.
Finally make new friends — friends that are different frm yu. Make yur bias a discnfirmatin bias;in ther wrds, when yu have an pinin n smething, dn’t just read infrmatin that cnfirms it. Instead, make an effrt t find infrmatin that culd ptentially prve yu wrng. If yu were right all alng, this exercise will nly make yur arguments strnger. If yu were wrng, yur mind will have been pened up t new ideas. Either way, this kind f pen-mindedness will give yu a brand-new perspective n life, and yu might even make sme unlikely new friends in the prcess.
32. Which can illustrate “cnfirmatin bias”?
A. We tend t welcme different ideas.
B. We accept messages frm the thers.
C. We argue against pints f disagreement.
D. We prefer infrmatin in line with ur views
33. What des the underlined wrd “hney”in paragraph 3 refer t?
A. Fllwing advice.B. Sharing cmmn grund.
C. Admitting mistakes.D. Blcking different ideas.
34. Hw can we benefit frm ur bias accrding t the last paragraph?
A. By letting g f ur wn pinin.
B. By making arguments mre reliable.
C. By pening up minds t new friends.
D. By securing infrmatin ppsite t urs.
35. What is the best title f the text?
A. Hw t negtiate with thers
B. Why it’s s hard t change hearts and minds
C. Hw t shift minds in plarized cmmunicatin
D. Why pen-mindedness is effective in cnversatins

Nt gd, nt excellent — perfect.

【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据首段中的“The majrity f plastic that pllutes ur planet’s ceans desn’t flat n the surface, but rather underneath the waves. This makes tracking and mnitring the prblematic rubbish using technlgy like satellites challenging fr researchers. (污染地球海洋的大部分塑料并没有漂浮在海面上,而是在海浪下面。这使得使用卫星等技术跟踪和监测有问题的垃圾对研究人员来说具有挑战性。)”可知,污染地球海洋的大部分塑料在海浪之下,这使得使用卫星等技术跟踪和监测有问题的垃圾具有挑战性,由此可知,研究人员在海洋污染方面面临塑料隐藏的挑战。故选A项。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“As detailed in a study published n June 14 in Nature Cmmunicatins, a prject trained a machine-learning prgram n 300, 000 imagery f the Mediterranean Sea gathered ver six years by the Eurpean Space Agency’s Cpernicus Sentinel-2 sateite. (虽然积丘只占整个海洋垃圾的很小一部分,但研究人员认为,这些垃圾可以作为污染热点的……。)”可知,积丘占海洋垃圾的很小部分,但可以作为污染热点的……,结合下文中的“Between July 2015 and September 2021, the team detected and mnitred a ttal f 14, 374 windrws — an expnential (指数的) increase in dcumented litter structures. (在2015年7月至2021年9月期间,该团队共检测并监测了14,374个积丘——记录的垃圾结构呈指数增长。)”可知,该团队共检测并监测了14,374个积丘——记录的垃圾结构呈指数增长,由此可推断,这些积丘可以看作是垃圾的指数,所以划线单词的意思与“指数”意义相近。故选A项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“Further analyses allwed the team t infer a number f influences, such as nearby ppulatin distributin, gegraphy, and rainfall, n where and when cean litter piles up.
Finally, make new friends — friends that are different frm yu.

A. By letting g f ur wn pinin.
B. By making arguments mre reliable.
C. By pening up minds t new friends.
D. By securing infrmatin ppsite t urs.
35. What is the best title f the text?
A. Hw t negtiate with thers
B. Why it’s s hard t change hearts and minds
C. Hw t shift minds in plarized cmmunicatin
D. Why pen-mindedness is effective in cnversatins
