Yu may have heard the name “Michelin” because it’s related t Michelin tires. The tire prducers Andre and Eduard Michelin created smething called a “Michelin Guide” in 1900. It was riginally meant as a guide specifically fr France, utlining all f the travel destinatins and why yu shuld visit them, and thus encuraging peple t buy cars, which meant mre tire sales.

As detailed in a study published n June 14 in Nature Cmmunicatins, a prject trained a machine-learning prgram n 300, 000 imagery f the Mediterranean Sea gathered ver six years by the Eurpean Space Agency’s Cpernicus Sentinel-2 satellite. The team then used this database t identify what are knwn as windrws — flating filaments (丝状物) cmpsed f garbage and plastic frmed by cean currents and wind.
Windrws, frequently shrt-lived structures, can extend fr miles befre spreading int the cean. While windrws nly accunt fr an extremely small prtin f verall cean litter, researchers therized the rubbish culd serve as prxies fr pllutin htspts. Between July 2015 and September 2021, the team detected and mnitred a ttal f 14, 374 windrws — an expnential (指数的) increase in dcumented litter structures.
