An ancient Latin prverb says “Aquila nn capit muscas” — cagles dn’t hunt flies— meaning that imprtant nes shuldn’t cncern themselves with small, insignificant matters. But the lins in East Africa shuld cncern themselves with the seemingly insignificant ants, because these ants are changing their lifestyles.
The stry starts with the acacia trees in an African wildlife area in central Kenya. Sme f these acacia trees prvide fd and shelter fr specific ant species, which in turn defend the tree against herbivres The ants are actively attacking and driving away herbivres that attempt t feed n the tree’s leaves. This is highly effective; the ants nt nly physically harm the herbivres but als release chemicals that can deter ther ptential attackers.
But these ants are in truble. Anther species called the “big-headed” ant is destrying entire grups f tree-prtecting ants. This, in turn, sets ff an entire chain f events that ends up influencing when and hw lins can hunt.
This ant invasin affects ne thing after the ther. It leaves the acacia trees defenseless against herbivres, especially elephants. The elephants cme in and eat the acacias at five t seven times the rate bserved in uninvaded areas. The lins, while hunting fr fd, have n mre trees t use fr hiding. This reduced tree cver makes lins less successful at hunting and pushes them t find different areas t hunt in.
“These tiny invaders are pulling n the ties that put an African ecsystem tgether, determining wh is eaten and where,” said Tdd Palmer, an eclgist frm Flrida.
The lins, which are already endangered, are managing t cpe with this by n lnger fcusing their attentin n zebras. The zebras, f curse, can see them much better n the apprach given the lack f cver. Instead, they are targeting water buffal. But this als isn’t the end f the stry. Wh knws what the lins’ changing strategy will mean fr the ecsystem dwn the line?
    8. What des the underlined wrd “deter” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Seek.B. Direct.C. Assess.D. Discurage.
    9. What rle d the elephants play in the chain reactin?
    A. Damaging the hiding place fr lins.B. Cperating with “big-headed” ants.
    C. Prtecting the acacias frm herbivres.D. Starting ff the disturbance f the chain.
    10. The authr mentins lins, zebras and water buffal t shw that ______.
    A. animals fall victim t bigger nes
    B. the eclgy is n the rad t recvery
    C. animals are c-related in the ecsystem

In the Pixar mvie Up, a fun cartn dg called Dug wears a magical cllar which can detect and translate his barks and cries int fluent human speech. Humans have always been fascinated by the ptential t cmmunicate with the animals. This week, an article in the New Yrk Times dcumented majr effrts frm a grup f researchers using machine-learning algrithms (算法) t analyze the different calls f whales, chickens, bats, cats, and mre.
There are several ways t train AI systems nw. Typically, Al systems learn thrugh training with labeled data f human language which can be well supplied by the Internet. But analyzing animal language is different. Scientists have t instruct sftware prgrams n what t lk fr, and hw t rganize the data. This prcess requires matching gained vcal (发声的) recrdings with the visual scial behavirs f animals. A grup studying Egyptian fruit bats, fr example, als used vide cameras t recrd the bats themselves t prvide cntext fr the calls.
Many critics f this apprach pint ut tw weaknesses f current AI language mdels: being unable t truly understand the relatinships between wrds and the bjects in the real wrld, and scientists’ little understanding f animal scieties. Al language mdels fr humans rely n a cmputer mapping ut the relatinship between wrds and the cntexts they culd appear in. But these mdels have their wn weak pints, and can smetimes be a black bx—researchers knw what ges in and cmes ut, but dn’t quite understand hw the algrithm is arriving at the cnclusin.
Anther factr that researchers shuld take int accunt is that animal cmmunicatins might nt wrk at all like human cmmunicatins. There might be unique elements t animal language due t physilgical and behaviral differences.
Making a Translatr fr animals has been a ppular prject that’s been in the wrks fr the last decade. Althugh sme sftware has shwn sme success in identifying the basic vcabulary f certain animals, it’s still a far cry frm understanding the cmplex animal languages.
    12. Why d researchers use Al t analyze animals’ calls?
    A. T tell the differences amng animals.
    B. T test Al’s ability f translating animal language.
    C. T understand animal language better.
    D. T explre the fun f cmmunicating with animals.
    13. What makes analyzing animal language different?
    A. The lack f labeled data fr training Al systems.
    B. The difficulty in relating human speech t real bjects.
    C. The need fr sund recrdings t prvide cntext.
    D. The matching f vcal recrdings with their calls.
    14. What des the underlined term “black bx” refer t in Paragraph 3?
    A. Al language mdels t study animal cmmunicatin.
    B. The researchers’ study n animal scieties.
C The relatinship between wrds and cntext.
    D. The methd f Al algrithms t draw cnclusins.
    15. What is the text mainly abut?
A Al systems fr animal language translatin.
    B. Limitatins f current Al language mdels.
    C. Unique aspects f detecting animal language.
    D. Challenges in creating a translatr fr animals.

    D. species are firmly psitined in the fd chain
    11. What is the text mainly abut?
    A. Why African lins are endangered.
    B. What eclgists find abut animals.
    C. Hw tiny ants affect the way lins hunt.
    D. Hw the law f the jungle wrks in Africa.
D 9. A 10. C 11. C

根据第二段“The ants are actively attacking and driving away herbivres that attempt t feed n the tree’s leaves. This is highly effective; the ants nt nly physically harm the herbivres but als release chemicals that can deter ther ptential attackers.(蚂蚁积极攻击并赶走试图以树叶为食的食草动物。这是非常有效的;蚂蚁不仅会对食草动物造成身体伤害,还会释放可以deter其他潜在的攻击者的化学物质)”可知,蚂蚁对合欢树具有保护作用,由此猜测蚂蚁可以释放化学物质,阻止其他潜在的攻击者,推测划线单词deter意为“阻止”,与discurage同义。故选D。
    【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“This ant invasin affects ne thing after the ther. It leaves the acacia trees defenseless against herbivres, especially elephants. The elephants cme in and eat the acacias at five t seven times the rate bserved in uninvaded areas. The lins, while hunting fr fd, have n mre trees t use fr hiding. This reduced tree cver makes lins less successful at hunting and pushes them t find different areas t hunt in.(蚂蚁的入侵影响了一件又一件事。它使金合欢树无法抵御食草动物,尤其是大象。大象吃金合欢的速度是未被入侵地区的5到7倍。狮子在寻找食物时,没有更多的树木可以用来躲藏。这种减少的树木覆盖使狮子狩猎不那么成功,并促使它们寻找不同的狩猎区域)”可知,大象吃掉金合欢树,这会使得狮子在寻找食物时,没有更多的树木可以用来躲藏,即破坏狮子的藏身之处。故选A。
根据倒数第二段““These tiny invaders are pulling n the ties that put an African ecsystem tgether, determining wh is eaten and where,” said Tdd Palmer, an eclgist frm Flrida. (来自佛罗里达州的生态学家托德·帕尔默(Tdd Palmer)说:“这些微小的入侵者正在将非洲生态系统联系在一起,决定谁被吃掉,在哪里被吃掉。”)”和最后一段“The lins, which are already endangered, are managing t cpe with this by n lnger fcusing their attentin n zebras. The zebras, f curse, can see them much better n the apprach given the lack f cver. Instead, they are targeting water buffal.
通读全文,并根据第一段“But the lins in East Africa shuld cncern themselves with the seemingly insignificant ants, because these ants are changing their lifestyles. (但东非的狮子应该关注这些看似微不足道的蚂蚁,因为这些蚂蚁正在改变它们的生活方式)”可知,本文主要介绍了小蚂蚁如何影响狮子的捕猎方式。故选C。

    C. The relatinship between wrds and cntext.
    D. The methd f Al algrithms t draw cnclusins.
    15. What is the text mainly abut?
    A. Al systems fr animal language translatin.
    B. Limitatins f current Al language mdels.
    C. Unique aspects f detecting animal language.
    D. Challenges in creating a translatr fr animals.
C 13. A 14. D 15. D
