22 March 2015
Tday we celebrate. It’s exactly ne mnth since the last reprted case. But it is vital nt t take any chances. S, 20 health care wrkers frm almst as many cuntries, cmrades in arms, raise virtual glasses t each ther.
I arrived in Liberia with MSF almst three mnths ag. When I saw the tragic scenes n the news, I felt it was my duty as a dctr t g there and ffer my help. I knew I was putting my life at risk, but I thught, “If I dn’t d it, wh will?” It is imprtant t remember that Ebla desn’t respect natinal bundaries. There are n brders fr dctrs, fr patients r fr anyne else invlved in cmbating this terrible disease.
My missin was t relieve Emma, a Canadian specialist in infectius diseases at the end f her psting. Emma spent an hur with me in the staff rm talking me thrugh the daily rutine. As she talked, I culd hear at least three different languages being spken at the tables arund us. Later, Emma intrduced me t sme f the thers wrking fr r alngside MSF: Wiltn, a yung lcal man, wh helped carry the very sick int the treatment clinic and wh disinfected clthing and surfaces; Maisy, a retired public health fficial frm Darwin, Australia, whse lcal team f vlunteers educated peple n preventing infectin; Alfns, a sft-spken Argentinian dctr in his 50s, wh had previusly wrked n Ebla utbreaks in Sierra Lene and Guinea. The list went n. I fund that I was the nly Chinese dctr amng peple f all ages, clurs and beliefs, frm every cntinent except Antarctica. With each persn I met, I felt a grwing sense f pride as part f this extrardinary team, whse devtin t the cause shne frm their eyes.
In the few weeks since then, I have cme t knw these peple very well. We have wrked tgether, surrunded by bld, vmit and death. But, althugh the death rate is very high, we will never give up n a patient, and ur effrts d smetimes end in miracles.
Just after my arrival, a family f six were brught here in the back f a van. All f them were infected. The twin girls and their parents sn died. We knew there was little hpe fr the brthers, but we did everything we culd t save them. When we visited the ward the next mrning, we were amazed t see that against all dds, bth bys were still alive. Pascal and Daniel have since made a full recvery. This small but unexpected success cmpensated fr many ther less frtunate cases.
T be caught up in such a crisis creates pwerful bnds between peple, nt nly between carers and patients, but als between all thse wh have cme frm different parts f the wrld and jined tgether in a cmmn cause. It is s inspiring t have clleagues like Wiltn, Maisy and Alfns, nt t mentin all the thers I have wrked with.
Nw my time is almst up. In a few days, smene else will arrive t step int my shes, and the tireless wrk that the MSF members d in mre than 70 cuntries and regins arund the wrld will g n. In a wrld still facing s many prblems, it is abslutely essential fr us all t cllabrate t create a glbal cmmunity with a shared future f peace and prsperity.
I saw the tragic scenes n the news and I felt it was my duty as a dctr t g there and ffer my help.
with strng sense f missin
Nw read the infrmatin and answer the questins.
I gt t knw the daily rutine and my clleagues and started my wrk.
Tgether with the thers wrking fr r alngside MSF,I helped thse wh were infected with the terrible disease Ebla. We wrked tgether, surrunded by bld, vmit and death.
Tw yung brthers survived the disease after their family members had died.
prund, hpeful, amazed
happy, inspired, prud, hpeful
We celebrated because it’s exactly ne mnth since the last reprted case, and my time is almst up.
We are cllabrating t create a glbal cmmunity with a shared future f peace and prsperity.
