第一节(共 15小题;每小题 2分,满分 30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和 D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was brn, there were 66 nvels published in Britain. Peple
had been writing nvels fr a century—mst experts date the first nvel t Rbinsn Cruse in 1719 — but nbdy wanted t d it prfessinally. The steam-pwered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy(识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many wrks f fictin appeared withut the names f the authrs, ften with smething like “By a lady.” Nvels, fr the mst part, were lked upn as silly, immral, r just plain bad.
In 1870, when Dickens died, the wrld murned him as its first prfessinal writer and publisher,
famus and belved, wh had led an explsin in bth the publicatin f nvels and their readership and whse characters — frm Oliver Twist t Tiny Tim— were held up as mral tuchstnes. Tday Dickens’greatness is unchallenged. Remving him frm the panthen(名人堂)f English literature wuld make abut as much sense as the Luvre selling ff the Mna Lisa.
Hw did Dickens get t the tp? Fr all the feelings readers attach t stries, literature is a
numbers game, and the test f time is extremely difficult t pass. Sme 60,000 nvels were published during the Victrian age, frm 1837 t1901; tday a casual reader might be able t name a half- dzen f them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style f writing attracted audiences frm all walks f life. It’s partly that his writings rde a wave f scial, plitical and scientific prgress. But it’s als that he rewrte the culture f literature and put himself at the center. N ne will ever knw what mix f talent, ambitin, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary f his birth appraches, it is pssible — and imprtant fr ur wn culture—t understand hw he made himself a lasting ne.

Tw weeks later, Glen and I culd be seen endlessly bgie barding (趴板冲浪) the crashing waves t the beach. After meeting Glen, cruising fr me began t get better and better. At sme pint during these mnths, I decided t give this cruising idea a chance.
One year later, we cntinued turing thrugh the Suth Pacific. I was learning new skills and
learning hw t wrk independently. I ften tk a five-hur watch during the dark hurs f lng passages. This was quite a bit f respnsibility t hand ver t a 13-year-ld, especially cnsidering I was in charge f adjusting sails as the cnditins changed, and keeping an eye and ear ut fr any prblems. Almst everybdy in the cruising cmmunity treated me as an adult while still understanding I was a child, thereby giving me the flexibility t make childish mistakes.
As f this writing, my family has nw been abard fr three years. We have plans t return t
Canada in 12 mnths and, similar t hw I ppsed mving nt the bat, I am nw cmpletely ppsed t mving ff it. I have s much fun and learn s many things n this bat that I can’t imagine ever returning “hme”, a place I hardly even remember.

Fr anyne planning t fly t r frm France in 2024, we’ve gt a bit f incnvenient news — thusands f flights frm fur French airprts are getting cancelled. It’s all because much f the air traffic cntrl system hasn’t been updated since the 1970s.
The air traffic cntrl systems in Paris’ main airprts are well verdue fr an upgrade. Thugh
the systems have received plenty f minr updates ver the years, 2024 is the time fr a huge imprvement- it’s thught that arund 80 percent f the system will need t be mdernized.
Currently, wrkers still use an air traffic cntrl prcess which was develped in the 1970s,
including using paper strips t represent incming planes. Thankfully, €1 billin is being invested int imprving France’s air traffic cntrl.
But that means there’ll be a large number f cancellatins. Accrding t BFM, it’s estimated
that arund 16,500 flights t r frm Paris’ Charles de Gaulle, Orly, Le Burget and Beauvais airprts wn’t g ahead. The number f passengers that passed thrugh Paris Airprts in 2022 was almst 44 millin. Paris’ Charles de Gaulle saw 26.1 millin passengers, and Paris Orly saw 15.7
millin passengers. Fr the cming imprvement, airlines that perate at these airprts have been
tld t reduce their flight prgramme by 20 percent between March 9 and April 14. It’s during this perid that the new system will be tested at Athis-Mns, France’s largest air traffic cntrl centre.
Will yur flight t France be impacted? Well, it’s up t each airline which flights wn’t run, but
it’s thught that lng-distance rutes will take pririty. Air France has already cancelled sme f theirs, ntified passengers, and ffered them same-day alternatives.
While this culd mean that travelling thrugh Paris is a faff (忙乱) in 2024, it’s estimated that
2.5 millin flights pass thrugh French airspace annually. With that much air traffic t cntrl, it’d be gd t have it all prcessed by smething a bit mre reliable than sme pieces f paper.
28.What incnvenience will be caused in France accrding t the passage?
A.Airlines will decrease their flights. B.A number f flights will be delayed.
C.Flights t France will be unavailable. D.The airprts will be under recnstructin.
29.Why are the figures listed in paragraph 4?
A.T illustrate the flight cancellatins. B.T give examples f airprt capacities.
C.T cmpare the numbers f passengers. D.T analyze the reasns fr air traffic cntrl.
30.What can happen t peple travelling t France in 2024?
A.They will be ffered a discunt.
B.They might reschedule their flights.
C.They will have t cancel their travel plans.
D.They can nly bk tickets fr lng-distance rutes.
31.What is the passage mainly abut?
A.France’s largest air traffic cntrl centre will be tested.
B.€l billin is being invested int mdernizing fur French airprts.
C.France is cancelling flights fr imprving air traffic cntrl system.
D.The number f passengers that pass thrugh Paris’ airprts will decrease.

Tday's wrld is nt an easy adjustment fr yung adults. Key skill set fr success is persistence
(毅力), a characteristic that researchers say is heavily influenced by fathers. Researchers frm Brigham Yung University discvered that fathers are in a unique psitin t help their adlescent children learn persistence.

"There are relatively few studies that stress the unique rle f fathers, "Padilla-Walker said.
"This research als helps t prve that characteristics such as persistence-which can be taught-are key t a child's life success.”

Authritative parenting is nt authritarian: rigid, demanding r cntrlling. Rather, an authritative parenting style includes sme f the fllwing characteristics: children feel warmth and lve frm their father; respnsibility and the reasns behind rules are stressed; children are given an apprpriate level f autnmy(自主权).
In the study, abut 52 percent f the dads exhibited abve-average levels f authritative
parenting. A key finding is that ver time, children raised by an authritative father were significantly mre likely t develp persistence, which leads t better utcmes in schl.
This particular study examined 11 t 14-year-lds living in tw-parent hmes. Yet the
researchers suggest that single parents still may play a rle in teaching the benefits f persistence, which is an avenue f future research.

33.What wuld an authritative father d when raising his children?
A.Ignre their demands.
B.Make decisins fr them.
C.Cntrl their behavirs.
D.Explain the rules t them.
34.Which grup can be a fcus f future studies accrding t the researchers?
A.Single parents. B.Children aged frm 11 t 14.
C.Authritarian fathers. D.Mthers in tw-parent hmes.
35.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A.Three Characteristics f Authritative Fathers.
