In 2016, when I was n the graduate scheme (计划) at Deutsche Bank, Marie Inafidn, chief executive f Stemettes, wh encurages girls t pursue careers in science, technlgy, engineering and maths (STEM), was als wrking there. I didn’t meet her at the time, but I did read an article abut her and her career.
Learning at 21 years ld abut the career f a yung black wman’s succeeding in a traditinally white male-dminated industry was ne f the mst influential things that ever happened t me. It gave me cnfidence that it was pssible t d well in the ffice and wrk n persnal external prject at the same time.
Rle mdels can play a central rle in shaping a yung prfessinal’s career. They are especially imprtant if yu belng t an under-represented grup fr whm a lack f representatin in the wrkplace can lead t feeling islated and lacking in cnfidence. They can help thse just starting ut, whether r nt they are a graduate as I was, t believe in their wn abilities.
There’s a grwing need t have accessible rle mdels. Given the tendency t exaggerate (夸大) success stries, hearing frm wmen wh talk hnestly abut the challenges they have faced, either when starting a business r frming a new career path, is much mre effective. A study revealed that 70 per cent f girls say they think differently abut their futures after hearing frm wmen rle mdels.
I’m frequently asked abut what businesses culd be ding t increase racial diversity in the wrkplace. A gd starting pint is t actively prmte and supprt the vices f the peple in the rganisatin that are leading psitive change and inspiring thers. This makes a real difference. Unlike the tkenism (装样子) I still cme acrss, which results in individuals being made the lne representative fr a grup withut real supprt frm the rganisatin.
Things came full circle fr me when I interviewed Ms. Inafidn fr my bk in 2019. I was able t tell her f the incredible impact her passin and cnfidence had had n me as a graduate trainee and hw grateful I wuld always be fr that.
    4. What d we learn abut Marie Inafidn?
    A. She became successful at 21.
    B. She was a trainee at Deutsche Bank.
    C. She encuraged girls t take up STEM-related wrk.
    D. She helped the authr with her external prject persnally.
    5. Wh can benefit mst frm rle mdels in the wrk place accrding t the third paragraph?
    A. Experienced prfessinals.B. A graduate eager t succeed.
    C. Peple withut special abilities.D. The yung frm an under-represented grup.
    6. What is effective in changing girls’ mindset?
    A Taking n challenging prjects.
    B. Reading mre made-up success stries.
    C. Starting their wn business as early as pssible.
    D. Listening t wmen rle mdels share their experiences.
    7. What shuld businesses d t increase racial diversity in the wrkplace accrding t the authr?
    A. Encurage psitive pinins.
    B. Make mre clred peple authrities.
    C. Include mre peple f different races.
    D. Understand the true meaning f tkenism.

AI has advanced significantly ver the years. Hwever, its current mdels largely disregard human psychlgy, such as emtinal intelligence.
“The main fcus f ur wrk was hw we culd bring the emtinal part f intelligence t AI,” says Saptarshi Das, assciate prfessr at Penn State. “Human behavir is easy t bserve but difficult t measure and that makes it difficult t replicate (复制) in a rbt and make it emtinally intelligent. There is n real way right nw t d that.”
Eating habits serve as a prime example f this emtinal intelligence. While hunger is the physilgical drive t eat, ur chices f what t eat are influenced by ur sense f taste. As Das explains, even when ne is nt hungry, the psychlgical desire can drive him r her t cnsume a sweet treat, rather than a piece f meat.
T grasp the intricacies (错综复杂的细节) f taste, Penn State researchers lked t the human tngue, which translates chemical data int electrical signals sent t the brain’s gustatry crtex (味觉皮层). In this brain regin, cmplex neurnal netwrks shape ur sense f taste. T imitate this, the team created an electrnic “tngue”.
This technlgy can be adapted t recgnize all primary taste characteristics, frm sweet and salty t umami (鲜味). Lking ahead, the researchers see numerus applicatins, including AI-designed diets based n emtinal preferences r tailred restaurant meal suggestins.
The team’s immediate gal is t expand the electrnic tngue’s capacity. “We are trying t imitate the 10,000 r s taste receptrs (味蕾) we have n ur tngue that are each slightly different cmpared t the thers, which enables us t distinguish between small differences in tastes,” says Das. “The example I think f is peple wh train their tngue and becme a wine taster. Perhaps in the future, we can have an AI system that yu can train t be an even better wine taster.”
Beynd taste, the team wants t braden this cncept t ther senses, leading t a mre cmprehensive and emtinally intelligent AI system.
    8. What can be learned frm the first tw paragraphs?
    A. It is necessary t make rbts emtinally intelligent.
    B. It is hard t make rbts emtinally intelligent.
    C. Emtinal intelligence is cmplex and difficult t bserve.
    D. Few researchers pay attentin t emtinal intelligence f AI.
    9. What might this electrnic tngue be applied fr in the future?
    A. Evaluating peple’s diet plans.B. Designing a healthier diet plan fr peple.
    C. Crrecting peple’s pr dietary preferences.D. Helping restaurants serve custmers better.
    10. What is the team’s plan accrding t the last tw paragraphs?
    A. Imprving peple’s taste sensitivity with the electrnic tngue.
    B. Making the electrnic tngue available fr everyne.
    C. Bringing all the human senses int the AI system.
    D. Attracting the attentin f ther researchers t AI’s innvatin.
    11. What is the text mainly abut?
    A. The prgress in bringing emtinal intelligence int AI.
    B. The advantage f the “electrnic tngue”.
    C. The future develpment trend f AI.
    D. The big rle f AI in develping emtinal intelligence.

“Srry, I’m just nw seeing yur email!” (Yu sent it 15 minutes ag.)
“Srry that yu cmpletely misinterpreted that thing I said.”
“Srry yu just rammed int me with yur grcery-stre cart.”
“Srry” has becme cmmnplace in daily cnversatins and cmmunicatins. We drp it indiscriminately fr all manner f things we really shuldn’t be srry fr. Is it time t stp?
“I wasn’t really that srry,” admits Luise Julig, a freelance writer in Encinitas, Calif., wh fund she was cnstantly aplgizing fr the “delay” when replying t ntes, even when there wasn’t much f a delay at all. “Srry has lst its meaning, n lnger a heartfelt declaratin f remrse (悔恨) but just a subcnscius respnse,” said Luise Julig. Nw, faced with a blank email, Ms. Julig asks herself, did I miss smething, r mess smene else up? If the answer is n, she’s nt srry.
I understand very well hw she feels. When I searched my sent emails fr the phrase, “Srry fr the delay,” the result was t many hits fr Gmail t give me an exact cunt. I tried, in the curse f reprting this clumn, t cut back n my aplgies. Mstly I failed, catching myself exclaiming srry! I aplgized t the persn I cntacted fr this piece when I called three minutes later than I was suppsed t; then I aplgized fr nly being able t meet him n the day I suggested, nt the ther; I even aplgized in advance fr any ffence I might cause t him during the cnversatin.
While aplgizing t much in daily life may nt have serius cnsequences, ding s in business, especially when yu’ve actually dne smething wrng, is just asking fr truble—yu’re giving away yur pwer, says Jeffrey Pfeffer, a prfessr f rganizatinal behavir at Stanfrd Graduate Schl f Business.
Peple are never satisfied with an aplgy, he adds. Exhibiting vulnerability (脆弱) nly makes yu lk weak. Standing yur grund cmes with risks. Yu might nt be liked. But he thinks it’s wrth it. “Yu can either give in t what peple want yu t be, r yu can decide that yu are ging t risk ffending peple. Life is abut trade-ffs (权衡),” he says.
    12. What did Luise Julig realize at last?
    A. She culdn’t help but delay replying t thers’ ntes.
    B. She had a misunderstanding f the meaning f “srry”.
    C. She didn’t have t say “srry” under many circumstances.
    D. She ften gt peple int truble by delaying answering emails.
    13. What des the authr find difficult?
    A. Aplgizing by making a phne call.B. Reducing the frequency f aplgies.
    C. Stpping smene frm aplgizing.D. Finding ut why peple ften aplgize.
    14. What des Jeffrey Pfeffer advise businessmen t d?
    A. T take thers’ aplgies seriusly.B. T avid ffending peple n purpse.
    C. T maintain pwer by aviding aplgizing.D. T make sincere aplgies whenever necessary.
    15. What des the text mainly talk abut?
    A. Why we can gain benefits by aplgizing.B. Why aplgies are unnecessary in sciety.
    C. Why aplgizing t much is nt favred.D. Why aplgizing can ffend peple smetimes.

At nn that day, I drve back t my huse after the perfrmance. Just as I entered the living rm, I heard a gentle sund cming frm the bedrm upstairs—it was the sund f my favrite vilin.
    “Thief!”
I dashed upstairs. Sure enugh, as expected, a by f abut 12 years ld was petting my vilin. The by had messy hair and a thin face, his versized cat seemingly filled with smething. At first glance, I fund a new pair f shes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.
Then, I saw his eyes full f fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile, I asked, “Are yu Mr. Ram’s nephew, Michael? I’m his husekeeper. Tw days ag, I heard his nephew living in the cuntryside will cme. It must be yu. Yu’re really like him!”
On hearing my wrds, the by was first astnished, but then quickly said, “Has my uncle gne ut? I think I’d better first g ut fr a walk and visit him again in a while.”
I ndded and asked the by wh was preparing t put dwn the vilin, “D yu like t play the vilin s much?”
“Yes, but I’m s pr that I can’t affrd it,” the by replied.
“Then, I give this vilin t yu.” The by lked at me questiningly, but he picked up the vilin. Ging ut t the living rm, he suddenly saw n the wall my huge clr pht I perfrmed in the Sydney Opera Huse. He invluntarily trembled fr a mment and ran ut withut lking back.
I was sure that the by had understd what happened because n ne wuld decrate the living rm with the husekeeper’s pht.
