In 1776 Thmas Paine, an Englishman, published a bk called Cmmn Sense, which became a best-seller. But in a paper, Mark Whiting and Duncan Watts, a pair f cmputatinal scial scientists, nte that the idea has seldm been seriusly studied.
The tw researchers set ut t fix that. They started by nting that the standard cncept f cmmn sense has a smewhat circular definitin:cmmn sense is a set f claims that sensible (明智的) peple agree with, and sensible peple are thse wh pssess cmmn sense.
T get arund such philsphical messes, the researchers recruited 2, 046 human participants and asked them t rate 50 statements frm a language database f 4, 407 claims that might be seen as cmmnsensical.
As cmmn sense might have predicted, the researchers fund that plainly wrded claims cncerning facts abut the real wrld were the mst likely t berated as demnstrating cmmn sense("triangles have three sides”, fr example, which is true by definitin, r “avid clse cntact with peple wh are ill"). The mre abstract the claims, the less likely participants were t agree that they were cmmn sense ("all human beings are created equal";“perceptin is the nly surce f knwledge"). When they split the claims by subject, the researchers fund that thse cncerning technlgy and science were the mst likely t be rated as cmmnsensical, while matters f histry and philsphy were the least likely.
A respndent's age, sex, incme and persnal plitics had little effect n what they thught cunted as cmmn sense, althugh psychlgical measures f scial perceptiveness and the ability t reflect n ne's pinins did.
Having investigated individual pinins, the researchers lked at hw cmmn sense wrks acrss big grups. Here, they fund much less agreement than might have been expected: Only arund 44%f claims in the language database were rated as cmmnsensical by at least 75%f respndents
A stricter definitin f cmmn sense, in which everyne has t agree with a claim fr it t cunt, cut that number t just 6. 6%. Where exactly a reasnable cut-fflies is a matter fr debate. But truly“cmmn”sense, it seems, is an unreadable thing.
12.What is the standard idea n cmmn sense?
A. It is what everybdy knws.B. It is what we take fr granted.
C. It is facts abut the real wrld.D. It is agreements f wise peple.
13.Which is mst prbably cnsidered cmmn sense by the participants?
A. Mney is equal t happiness.B. Wash yur hands befre meals.
C. Failure is the mther f success.D. Practice is the nly criterin t test truth.
14.Which factr influences peple's judgment f cmmn sense?
A. Mental health.B. Persnal salary
C. Scial insight.D. Other’s cmments.
15.What is a suitable title fr the text?
A. Cmmn Sense Des Nt Really Exist
B. Cmmn Sense Wrks Acrss Crwds
C. Cmmn Sense Originates Frm The Minrity
D. Cmmn Sense Is Nt Actually Very Cmmn
