    Writing 1
【2023年新高考全国Ⅰ&II卷】When I was in middle schl, my scial studies teacher asked me t enter a writing cntest. I said n withut thinking. I did nt lve writing. My family came frm Brazil, s English was nly my secnd language. Writing was s difficult and painful fr me that my teacher had allwed me t present my paper n the sinking f the Titanic by acting ut a play, where I played all the parts. N ne laughed harder than he did.
S, why did he suddenly frce me t d smething at which I was sure t fail? His reply: “Because I lve yur stries. If yu’re willing t apply yurself, I think yu have a gd sht at this.” Encuraged by his wrds, I agreed t give it a try.
I chse Paul Revere’s hrse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Bstn wh rde a hrse at night n April 18, 1775 t Lexingtn t warn peple that British sldiers were cming. My stry wuld cme straight frm the hrse’s muth. Nt a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely t be anyne else’s chice.
What did the hrse think, as he sped thrugh the night? Did he get tired? Have dubts? Did he want t quit? I sympathized immediately. I gt tired. I had dubts. I wanted t quit. But, like Revere’s hrse, I kept ging. I wrked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my lder sister t crrect my grammar. I checked ut a half dzen bks n Paul Revere frm the library. I even read a few f them.
When I handed in the essay t my teacher, he read it, laughed ut lud, and said, “Great. Nw, write it again.” I wrte it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thught f winning had given way t the enjyment f writing. If I didn’t win, I wuldn’t care.

Frm the mment my husband brught hme a bx f six chicks frm Tractr Supply Cmpany, ur nine-year-ld, Sphie, didn’t let them ut f her sight. She named them Trixie, Beauty, Sweet Pea, Speedie, Captain Flint, and Adrian (we were reading Treasure Island and watching Rcky at the time).
Sphie made a prmise that she wuld take gd care f them and tk at least ne chicken everywhere we let her. We were cntent with this; after all, it was a gd way t make her dutiful and respnsible. S when we wuldn’t let them sleep in her bed, she was very upset. She, actually, argued abut this issue again and again, claiming that it is Duty NO.1 t cmpany her baby chickens t sleep. Later, we made a cmprmise that we’ve allwed ne inside at a time if Sphie immediately cleans up after the visit.
On a special festival, she dressed as a chicken and cnvinced us it was the turn f Trixie and Sweet t cme with her t get candies frm the neighbrs — that’s Duty NO.2 t cmpany her baby t have fun. The reactins frm neighbrs were quite amusing. “Wait, are these real chickens yu’re hlding?” “Of curse! They’re my babies, and I am the mther.” Sphie answered excitedly. Trixie and Sweet ced (咕咕叫) the whle time, seeming t make respnse.
One ht day, I buried myself in piles f wrk when Sphie rushed int the rm, asking “Mmmy, can I take Captain Flint t the pnd?” T be frank, I didn’t quite catch what she said but still ndded, even withut taking my eyes ff the screen. She jumped t cheer. “Captain Flint, let’s head fr the pnd nw!” “C, c.” Then they rushed ut f the rm.
Several minutes later, I suddenly realized that Sphie just went t the pnd with a chicken! Culd Sphie swim? N!!! Culd chickens swim? N!!! Culd anything unexpected happen?
