The battle fr wmen’s right t vte
One hundred years ag, British wmen were given the vte fr the first time. Hw did it cme abut?
The first appeals fr wmen’s right t vte in Britain date frm the early 19th century. In 1818, in his Plan f Parliamentary Refrm, Jeremy Bentham insisted that wmen shuld be given the vte. Wmen at the time had n plitical rights at all-they were deemed t be represented by their husbands r fathers. The ld arguments prevailed. Wmen, it was said, were mentally less able than men; their “natural psitin” was in the hme; they were unable t fight fr their cuntry, and thus undeserving f full rights; mrever, they simply didn’t want the vte. This was at least partly true. “I have never felt the want f a vte,” declared Flrence Nightingale in 1867, while Queen Victria cndemned the “mad, wicked flly f wmen’s rights”. Even Gerge Elit was reluctant t back the cause.
It wasn’t until the secnd half f the 19th century that the first campaigning wmen’s grups were frmed. Initially they fcused n the lack f educatin, emplyment pprtunities and legal rights fr wmen(married wmen, at the time, had n independent legal standing); but the questin f the vte gradually became central t their demands— bth symblically, as a recgnitin f wmen’s rights, and practically, as a means f imprving wmen’s lives.
Hwever the wmen’s campaigning was still a subject f debate. While mst histrians agree that the campaigns were initially very effective in mbilizing wmen and highlighting injustices, a series f mass prcessins fllwed; mre than 250,000 wmen prtested in Hyde Park in 1908. Many were arrested and ill-treated; prisners wh went n hunger strike were brutally frce-fed. Over time they became steadily mre militant— smashing shp windws, setting fire t letter bxes, libraries and even hmes. The PM, Herbert Asquith, an ppnent f wmen’s vtes, was attacked with a dg whip. Such use f vilence was thught, certainly at the time, t have been unfavrable.
With the sacrifices f the First Wrld War strengthening supprt fr widening the right t vte generally, wmen suspended campaigning. Mre than a millin wmen were newly emplyed utside the hme— in munitins(军需品) factries, engineering wrks. Crucially, Asquith was replaced as PM by David Llyd Gerge, a supprter f vtes fr wmen. The Representatin f the Peple Act 1918 was intrduced by the calitin gvernment and passed by a majrity f 385 t 55, gaining the Ryal Assent n 6 February 1918. Wmen ver 30, wh were husehlders r married t ne, r university graduates, were given the vte.
    43. Which f the fllwing is NOT the reasn why wmen were nt qualified t vte?
    A. Wmen had already enjyed many plitical rights.
    B. Wmen were t weak t fight against enemies.
    C. Wmen were suppsed t d husewrk and serve their husbands.
    D. Wmen were nt as intelligent as men.
    44. Accrding t the passage, why did wmen’s campaigning aruse debate?
    A. Because it failed t mbilize wmen and emphasize injustices.
    B. Because wmen were put in prisn and abused during the prtest.
    C. Because all the emtinal behavirs were regarded as imprper.
    D. Because mst wmen didn’t want the vte.
    45. The wrd “militant”(in Line 5, Para.4) prbably refers t ______.
    A. extremeB. splendidC. cmpassinateD. nble
    46. What can be inferred frm the passage?
    A. The first campaigning wmen grups were frmed riginally fr the sake f legal rights.
    B. The PM, Herbert Asquith, an ppnent f wmen’s vtes, cmmitted suicide.
    C. Wmen stpped prtesting fr their vte because they were ffered mre jb pprtunities.
    D. All wmen can enjy their right t vte since the intrductin f Peple Act.
