Scientists have reprted that the sea ice in Antarctica (南极) is at a recrd lw level. Antarctica is a great, icy land, surrunded by the huge Suthern Ocean. The ice in Antarctica desn’t just cver the land. There’s als a large area f sea ice n the cean’s surface.
Every year, the sea ice at the Suth Ple ges thrugh a cycle. In the summer, the huge sea ice melts (融化) t its smallest pint. Over the clder winter mnths, the sea ice grws and grws until it cvers a wide area. Usually, the sea ice cvers the greatest area arund September 23, as winter ends at the Suth Ple.
Scientists have been measuring the area f the sea ice in Antarctica since 1979. Fr mst f this time, Antarctica has seemed t be almst unaffected by the changing weather cnditins experienced in ther parts f the glbe. That began t change arund 2016. Nw, fr several years, the area f Antarctica’s sea ice has been shrinking.
This year, the US Natinal Snw and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) reprted that Antarctica’s sea ice cvered its greatest area n September 10 — almst tw weeks earlier than nrmal. And the sea ice was at a new recrd lw-nt just by a little bit, but by a lt.
The last time Antartica’s lw sea ice set a recrd at the end f winter was in 1986. And this year, there’s abut 398, 000 square miles less sea ice than in 1986.
