Twenty-tw years ag, I wn a Nbel Prize, tgether with Tim and Leland Hartwell, fr ur wrks n hw cells cntrl their divisin.
The prize changed ur lives. Suddenly yu becme a public figure being asked t d all srts f things: t give lectures, quite ften n tpics yu knw little abut; t sit n cmmittees and reviews yu are nt always well qualified t be n; t visit cuntries yu have barely heard f. It is like having a whle new extra jb, with upwards f 500 requests a year.
A recent study suggests that in general the extra cmmitments that Nbel winners take n result in fewer papers after their awards. There may be sme truth t this given the extra demands n ne’s time, but f curse prestigius awards als allw new prjects and research t be undertaken.
What effects did the Nbel Prize have n my subsequent career and wrk? It has certainly helped me t get scientific leadership psitins. Within a year f getting the prize I was ffered and accepted the presidency f Rckefeller University in New Yrk. Having the prize als helps t get things dne. Fr example, I have been invlved in the merging f tw separate cancer research charities t frm Cancer Research UK. And it has helped me supprt causes I care deeply abut. I became an ambassadr fr Ukraine educatin and science t help raise mney fr schls in that shattered cuntry. Mrever, having a Nble des help attract high-quality research clleagues. I have just started three excellent new Ph.D. students. It is a privilege fr me t be able t pursue curisity-driven research at this late stage f my career.
Hwever, ne thing I am glad t say that Nbel Prize did nt influence was peer review frm my fellw scientists, assessing the suitability f my wn research fr publicatin, and my grant applicatins fr funding. My rejectin rates have remained essentially the same befre and after the prize. And that, f curse, is exactly hw it shuld be.

The Wrld Health Organizatin recently said that it planned t add gaming disrder (游戏成瘾) t its new list f disease classificatins, angering the gaming industry but pleasing dctrs wh hpe it may make treatment mre easily available.
Sme US experts said it wuld make little difference when it cmes t helping peple with the disrder, althugh thers said it wuld bring attentin t a disrder that peple smetimes dn’t recgnize. Many f us enjy vide games, but des playing ur favrite game fr a cuple f hurs every night mean we’re suffering frm gaming disrder? Nt, accrding t the WHO. The symptms listed by the WHO include a lack f cntrl ver gaming, treating gaming mre seriusly than ther life interests and daily activities, and cntinuing t play games despite the negative cnsequences that playing them might have. “The behavir pattern is enugh t result in significant damage t ne’s persnal, family, r scial life,” the WHO said.
Meanwhile, Duglas Gentile f Iwa State University has carried ut influential research int the cause f gaming addictin in yung peple. “I and many thers had assumed that gaming is nt really a prblem but is a symptm f ther prblems,” he tld NBC News. Many had thught it was simply a failure f self-cntrl.
T see if it was, Gentile’s team studied a grup f children wh had been gaming fr several years. “We fund that when kids became addicted, their anxiety increased... and their grades decreased,” Gentile said. When kids were able t back ff frm gaming, their symptms disappeared, he added. Gentile thinks medical rganizatins shuld pay attentin t the WHO’s prpsal. “This isn’t an issue f pinin; it’s all issue f science,” he said. “This is a majr scientific and medical rganizatin. They dn’t d things lightly and withut reasn.”
Dr Petrs Levunis, chair f psychiatry at the New Jersey Medical Schl at Rutgers University, said that he hped the WHO’s prpsal wuld lead t mre research int bsessive (过度的) behavir amng all types f peple. “Nw, there is renewed interest and excitement,” he said.

Each year, the wrld lses abut 10 millin hectares f frest—an area abut the size f Iceland because f cutting dwn trees. At that rate, sme scientists predict the wrld’s frests culd disappear in 100 t 200 years. T handle it, nw researchers at Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT) have pineered a technique t generate wd-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it pssible t “grw” a wden prduct withut cutting dwn trees.
In the lab, the researchers first take cells frm the leaves f a yung plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium fr tw days, then mved t anther medium which cntains nutrients and tw different hrmnes (激素). By adjusting the hrmne levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities f the cells Next, the researchers use a 3D printer t shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grw in the dark fr three mnths. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities.
They fund that lwer hrmne levels lead t plant materials with mre runded, pen cells f lwer density (密度), while higher hrmne levels cntribute t the grwth f plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lwer r higher density f cell structures makes the plant materials sfter r mre rigid, helping the materials grw with different wd-like characteristics. What’s mre, it’s t be nted that the research prcess is abut 100 times faster than the time it takes fr a tree t grw t maturity!
Research f this kind is grund-breaking. “This wrk demnstrates the great pwer f a technlgy,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. “The real pprtunity here is t be at its best with what yu use and hw yu use it. This technlgy can be tuned t meet the requirements yu give abut shapes, sizes, rigidity, and frms. It enables us t ‘grw’ any wden prduct in a way that traditinal agricultural methds can’t achieve.”
    27. Why d researchers at MIT cnduct the research?
    A. T grw mre trees.B. T prtect plant diversity.
    C. T reduce tree lsses.D. T predict frest disappearance.
    28. What des paragraph 2 mainly tell us abut the lab research?
    A. Its theretical basis.B. Its key prcedures.
    C. Its scientific evidence.D. Its usual difficulties.
    29. What des the finding suggest abut the plant materials?
    A. The hrmne levels affect their rigidity.
    B. They are better than naturally grwn plants.
    C. Their cells’ shapes mainly rely n their density.
    D. Their grwth speed determines their characteristics.
    30. Why is the research grund-breaking accrding t Berenstain?
    A. It uses new bilgical materials in lab experiments.
    B. It revlutinizes the way t make wden prducts.
    C. It challenges traditinal scientific theries in frestry.
    D. It has a significant impact n wrldwide plant grwth.
