An interesting phenmenn is that Paris syndrme is “mst cmmn amng Japanese turists”. Why?

“An encunter with a Parisian waiter wh shuts at custmers might be laughed ff by thse frm ther Western cultures. But fr the Japanese—used t a sciety where pliteness is valued and vices are rarely raised in anger—the experience f their dream city turning int a nightmare (噩梦) can simply be t much,” said Rdanthi Tzanelli, a prfessr f cultural scilgy.
S Paris syndrme shuld be regarded as an extreme frm f culture shck, which is an illness resulting frm the lss f meaning when peple find themselves in a different symblic reality, accrding t Rachel Irwin, a senir researcher. The symptms (症状) assciated with culture shck are similar t thse experienced by smene wh is feeling anxius. Accrding t the analysis (分析) f Calm Clinic, a mental health resurce platfrm, when smene is experiencing anxiety, signals that are related t the fight r flight respnse will be sent t the stmach. The signals change the way the bdy prcesses fd, causing nausea.
Besides, Tzanelli pints ut that the syndrme is nt specific t Paris and nbdy can be free f culture shck as lng as they g t new places. The syndrme is likely a “general phenmenn”, as yunger generatins tend t travel t different cuntries, and are likely t be mre aware f what they’ll encunter at a destinatin. On an Octber mrning in 2021, rnithlgist (鸟类学家) Mark A. Michaels sptted a bird in a frest, which he first thught was a duck based n its size and lng neck. Michaels has had several pssible ivry-bill encunters, but he culdn’t be fully certain. This sighting was different. “That was the first time I had been abslutely sure,” he says.

In September 2021, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) put frward a ruling that wuld declare the ivry-billed wdpecker, alng with 22 ther species, extinct. Hwever, the supprtive data are debated. As a result, n July 6,2022, the agency gave the wdpecker an extensin f six mnths befre deciding whether t strip away its prtected status (地位) as an existing endangered species.
This case highlights sme challenges researchers face in determining whether a species has actually gne extinct. “It’s difficult t prve the absence f smething,” says eclgist H. Resit Akcakaya, and s a lack f sightings is nt necessarily evidence f extinctin.
Mrever, there are csts t making the wrng call abut a species’ existence in the wild. Cntinuing t classify (界定) an actually extinct species as endangered can misdirect financial resurces away frm prtecting vulnerable (脆弱的) species t searching fr nes that n lnger exist. On the ther hand, declaring smething extinct when it isn’t can d further harm t a struggling species. “If we think a species is extinct, we n lnger have t prtect it,” Akcakaya says, “and then it may actually g extinct.”
In the case f the ivry-billed wdpecker, Michaels culd d nthing but await USFWS’s ruling. But he was glad that the agency gave the extensin. “I’m persnally ne hundred percent sure that it’s ut there,” says Michaels.
