II. Grammar and Vcabulary Sectin A
Directins: After reading the passage belw, fill in the blanks t make the passage cherent and grammatically crrect. Fr the blanks with a given wrd, fill in each blank with the prper frm f the given wrd; fr the ther blanks, use ne wrd that best fits each blank.
Are yu the kind f persn wh hated schl? Or are yu mre like Michael Nichlsn, wh can’t stp ____21____(learn)? He currently has 30 degrees including 22 master’s and a dctrate! If yu’re als passinate abut studying, yu might be a philmath — a persn wh lves t learn and study. The wrd cmes frm Greek____22____ ‘phil’ meaning ‘a lver f’ and ‘math’ meaning ‘learning’.
Humans are all philmaths t an extent — ur brain ____23____ (prgramme) t be curius. ____24____ (make) sense f the wrld, we are eager t learn and understand. But it is als because f smething called neteny. This is a term that ____25____ (refer) t the adlescent characteristics f sme animals, including humans, being maintained int adulthd. One f these traits is neurplasticity, ____26____functin is t make ur brain stay flexible and give us the ability t learn thrughut ur lives. Many creatures which are genetically clse t ____27____ (we) can’t d this and nly learn during their adlescence.
But fr every persn wh lves learning, there are plenty wh can’t stand it. Lts f peple remember their schl days as being bring r even pintless. Why is this? Educatinal experts have suggested that ____28____ a cncept r idea is t cmplex r dull, it becmes harder t link ld and new ideas tgether. If that’s the case, we lse mtivatin and absrb less infrmatin. As a result, ____29____peple are negatively expsed t at schl may lead t them aviding learning pprtunities in later life.
S, dn’t let a bad educatinal experience prevent yu learning smething new as an adult. Evlutin has made us lifelng learners, ____30____take advantage f yur bilgy and discver yur inner philmath. Wh knws what yu culd achieve?
    Sectin B
Directins: Cmplete the fllwing passage by using the wrds in the bx. Each wrd can nly be used nce. Nte that there is ne wrd mre than yu need.
It happens just abut every time I g t a restaurant with my daughter. I pen the menu and scan the ptins. Then I glance at the children’s menu. Oftentimes, the menu is pretty____31____, with the same pasta and tmat sauce. But the items n the children’s menu are usually less expensive, and I’ll think t myself: Ww, gd deal.
If I think again fr a mment, thugh, the deal isn’t really a deal. After all, I estimated the cst f the pasta____32____n the adult menu, nt n the actual cst f making sme bw-tie ndles and serving them with a red sauce.
My faulty____33____is the prduct f anchring, a cgnitive bias (认知偏差) that can weaken ur critical thinking.
Accrding t researchers, anchring is when peple rely n____34____but easily accessible facts t make judgments. Our minds give t much weight t initial impressins r numbers that influence ur____35____thughts. In my case, the prices n the adult menu____36____r anchred my judgment abut the value f the items n the children’s menu.
Studies shw that anchring effects____37____n matter hw weak the cnnectin between the anchr and the actual decisin. One study fund that “estimates f an athlete’s perfrmance were influenced by the number n his jersey ( 运 动 衫 ).” In ther wrds, peple thught that an athlete with a higher jersey number was better than an athlete with a lwer number, all else being equal.
Anchring affects all kinds f decisins, even thse made by experts wh shuld knw better. In particular, a recent study shws that anchring is far mre cmmn in the financial wrld than____38____ believed, with substantial anchring effects influencing perfrmance in the stck market. A study shwed that investrs valued firms mre highly if the firms had higher stck prices. S, if tw cmpanies have the same financial____39____except that Cmpany X has fewer shares at a higher price than Cmpany Y, then Cmpany X’s shares will sell better ver the lng run than Cmpany Y’s. Why? Because the stck price — the anchr — enhances the cmpany’s perceived value.
The phenmenn f anchring shws that while we think f urselves as ratinal and lgical beings unrelated details can have a(n) ____40____influence n ur reasning. The best slutin is t imprve critical thinking skills. Otherwise, yu might be a victim f anchring, dragged dwn by yur bias, whether yu ntice it r nt.
    III. Reading Cmprehensin Sectin A
Directins: Fr each blank in the fllwing passage there are fur wrds r phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the wrd r phrase that best fits the cntext.
    Online Arts
Fancy an evening at the theatre but can’t face sitting there fr hurs? Theatre cmpanies will happily ffer live perfrmances nline. Want t see a band but____41____by the high ticket prices? N wrries. Many mainstream bands allw their cncerts t be____42____free f charge. Nw galleries are getting____43____t, enabling sfa-bund art lvers t wander arund the wrld’s greatest art institutins, all in high reslutin(分辨率) and withut fear f getting sre feet. But is it really the same as seeing paintings in the flesh? I decided t find ut.
I head t the Muse Reina Sfia in Madrid, ne f my favurite galleries. I enjy myself racing past sculptures and staring at varius prtraits in a manner that I wuld disapprve f were I actually there. There’s a lt t be said fr ____44____art this way. Admissin is free and there aren’t any queues. ____45____, yu wn’t have t tlerate the nise f fellw visitrs as they ludly bradcast their knwledge f the il paintings n exhibit.
But it’s n____46____fr the real thing. Billins f pixels(像素) ____47____t accurately transmit the scale r clur r atmsphere f a painting r cnvey the sense f wnder yu feel when standing in frnt f it. And nly in a gallery d yu have the pprtunity t____48____the rest f the wrld, engage with a wrk and view it in cntext. My enduring thught, while I am walking arund the Muse Reina Sfia____49____, is hw much nicer it wuld be if I were literally in Madrid.
____50____in almst all its frms is meant t be a shared experience, whether yu are sitting in an pera huse r wandering arund a gallery. It is als a ritual, ne that is abut s much mre than the cultural event itself. Often the pleasure is as much in the____51____as the executin (执行). Remve the preparatin part where yu imagine hw it will be, and yu____52____a vital part f the experience.
Lying n the sfa, with cmputers, phnes and remte cntrls readily____53____, is smething I rutinely d. But when it cmes t art appreciatin, even a lazy man like me can recgnise the basic____54____t leave the huse. Ultimately it’s a bit like watching hlidays n TV. Yes, yu can cut ut the sweat and the aching legs. By staying at hme, yu can stare at the lcals withut embarrassment and____55____the finest views. But it’s just nt the same if yu can’t feel the sun n yur face.

During recent years legends have grwn up amng peple wh live near the park, legends f life amng the treetps.
One stry was f a yung, handsme man wh had been sptted frm time t time amng the branches. This rumur abut a mdern Tarzan (人猿泰山) turned ut t be true. The yung man had been living in the treetps fr eight years until discvered by the city authrities.

The park authrities quickly became aware f his activities. Hwever, the huses were ften nt detected fr lng perids f time. Trust me — I am expeditin dctr
Ever since I was a yung child, I’ve had a taste fr adventure, but I never imagined I’d be able t satisfy this passin at regular intervals because f my chsen career.
My wrk as an expeditin (探险队) dctr has taken me all ver the wrld. Hwever, my favurite trips, and the nes in which I nw specialise, are thse invlving muntains. Never d I feel mre inspired by nature than when I lk up at their twering peaks and begin t prepare myself mentally fr the challenges ahead.
I trained as a dctr in the UK, but there was little in that training t prepare me fr binding up a brken leg during a strm n the side f a muntain! In fact, I’d say that medical skills cme sme way dwn the list f jb requirements, after endurance, flexibility, prblem-slving and cmmunicatin.
This kind f medicine is a millin miles away frm the cntrlled, germ-free envirnment f a hspital, and yur medical kit basically cnsists f whatever yu can carry, s yu smetimes have t be prepared t imprvise (即兴做). Fr example, I’ve learned that sme drugs can be used fr several cnditins, and I’ve even had t resrt t cutting branches ff a small tree t make a stick t supprt a brken arm.
That isn’t t say that yu can’t train t be an expeditin dctr; n the cntrary, there are sme excellent curses available. Nt nly d they teach medical techniques, but als practical skills such as carrying ut risk assessments, crssing rivers safely and using satellite phnes. The first curse I did included a sessin n expeditin dentistry, thugh I must admit I still dn’t like the idea f pulling ut smene’s tth!
I d mst f my wrk fr adventure hliday cmpanies, travelling t remte places. When I started ut, these hlidays were quite rare, but they have becme much mre mainstream nw that we’ve all seen celebrities climbing Kilimanjar r watched reality shws abut peple surviving in jungles.
I d have mixed feelings abut all these peple with large amunts f dispsable incme cming t pr areas just fr their wn enjyment, s I try t make sure that the cmpanies I wrk fr have high ethical standards and benefit the lcal cmmunities. And f curse, turism prvides emplyment, and als pens the eyes f rich visitrs t the hardship that many peple are frced t endure.
I realise that this kind f life isn’t fr everyne, but I’d recmmend that all dctrs try it at least nce, if nly t make them appreciate the cmfrts f their usual wrking envirnment!
    63. The authr feels that he has been________.
    A. bliged t chse his careerB. lucky with his jb
    C. bsessed with his adventureD. inspired by his patients
    64. Accrding t the passage, what can be learned abut medical skills fr an expeditin dctr?
    A. They are less imprtant than practical skills.
    B. They are strictly required as the mst imprtant.
    C. They are adequately attained in medical schls.
    D. They are an underlying part f practical skills.
    65. Why d expeditin dctrs smetimes have t use unusual techniques?
    A. They keep their equipment in a backpack.
B Things can happen that they dn’t expect.
    C. They dn’t have the resurces f a hspital.
    D. They are required by the patients n the trip.
    66. The authr wrks fr ethical cmpanies because________.
    A. they rganise expeditins in the remte areas he enjys visiting
    B. they appreciate the cmfrts f the unusual wrking envirnments
    C. he wants t make sure that his clients are safe at all times during the expeditin
    D. he feels uncmfrtable abut the difference between rich turists and pr lcal peple
    Sectin C
Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Fill in each blank with a prper sentence given in the bx. Each sentence can be used nly nce. Nte that there are tw mre sentences than yu need.
Eating meat is nt a crime against the planet — if it’s dne right
I have huge admiratin fr Gerge Mnbit, a well-knwn clumnist. His wrk has highlighted the urgent need t reduce ur CO2 emissins and switch t greener energy. He has als shwn intensive farming’s rle in the dramatic levels f species decline and bidiversity lss. Much f what he writes is in line with my stand. ____67____
It is undeniable that the farming revlutin f the 1950s has started a war n nature. These intensive ways f prducing fd are nt nly plluting ur land and waterways, but are heating up ur planet and cntributing t a crisis in human health. We need t change the way we eat and prduce fd, and fast.
____68____But in a recent article, he wrte that rganic, pasture-fed beef and lamb are the “wrld’s mst damaging farm prducts.” He criticises “chefs and fdies” like me fr fcusing n regenerative grazing — farming that aims t repair, rebuild, revitalize and restre ecsystem functin. His alternative visin includes a revlutin in creating fd in labs frm micrbes and water.
Althugh nt ppsed t the idea f lab-grwn fd, I am much mre fr small-scale cmmunity-driven farming.
____69____Methds that regenerative farmers prpse have shwn hw nn-intensive livestck, when managed well, can increase tpsil mre than previusly thught, which can then build up bimass (carbn) and keep precius rainwater. Accrding t the Fd and Agriculture Organizatin f the UN, small-scale farmers currently prduce abut a third f ur fd.
____70____These inventins in new fd technlgy are heavily patented, pushing the future f ur fd supply further int the hands f an increasingly small and pwerful cllectin f multinatinal fd players. In ur race t lk fr better systems f fd prductin. We cannt affrd t ignre the risks.
    A. Thus far Mnbit and I agree.
    B. Mnbit’s enthusiasm fr creating fd in labs wrries me.
    C. That is because I believe in the ptential f fd t be a frce fr gd.
    D. Regenerative farming has prduced untested fd thrugh small-scale farms.
    E. The health impact f prcessed fds gets very little attentin frm the gvernment.
    F. Hwever, regarding the slutins needed t change ur farming and fd systems, we have different views.
    IV. Summary Writing
    71. Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pint(s) f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
    The prblem f electrnic waste
We have gradually cme t realise that in tw ways in particular, mdern hi-tech can be bad fr the planet. The first is its energy use; the wrldwide scale f infrmatin technlgy is s enrmus that electrnics nw prduce fully tw percent f glbal carbn emissins, which is abut the same as the highly cntrversial emissins f aerplanes. The ther is the hardware, when it cmes t the end f its natural life. This, increasingly, is pretty shrt. We have hardly nticed this imprtant stream f waste, s much s that a Greenpeace reprt n the untraced and unreprted e-waste tw years ag referred t it as “the hidden flw”. We need t be aware f it.
The latest United Natins Envirnment Prgramme (UNEP) reprt estimates that wrldwide, electrnic waste is munting by abut 40 millin tns a year. S what can we d abut it?
The Eurpean Unin has recgnised the prblem by adpting a key principle: prducer respnsibility. In ther wrds making it the duty f manufacturers f electrnic gds t ensure their safe dispsal at the end f their lives. In practice, an EU regulatin nw means that electrnics dealers must either take back the equipment they sld yu, r help t finance a netwrk f drp-ff pints, such as public recycling sites. Its main feature is quite ambitius: it aims t deal with “everything with a plug”.
The new UN reprt suggests that all cuntries culd d smething abut the prblem with a change in design. Grups such as Greenpeace have led the way in putting pressure n majr manufacturing cmpanies t find substitutes fr the txic chemicals inside their prducts. Encuragingly, they have had sme success in frcing them t develp nn-pisnus alternatives t these. This may be the real way frward.

In ther wrds, making it the duty f manufacturers f electrnic gds t ensure their safe dispsal at the end f their lives.
