Researchers used data frm the Health and Retirement Study. In that study, peple were given several cgnitive tests. Researchers used thse cgnitive tests t recrd cgnitive scre fr each persn, ranging frm 0 t 27. The scre included cmmn tests f subtractin (减法), number cunting and wrd memry. Researchers then used participants’ cgnitive scres t judge the cnnectins between years f pet wnership and cgnitive functin.
Over six years, the cgnitive scres decreased at a slwer rate in pet wners. This difference was strnger amng lng-term pet wners. Cnsidering ther factrs knwn t affect cgnitive functin, the study shwed that lng-term pet wners usually had a higher cgnitive scre cmpared t nn-pet wners. The researchers als fund that the cgnitive benefits cnnected with lnger pet wnership were strnger fr cllege educated adults and men.
“As stress can negatively affect cgnitive functin, the pssible stress-reducing effects f pet wnership culd prvide a prper reasn fr ur findings,” said Braley.
