Scres f French lve letters frm the mid-18th century have been pened and studied fr the first time since they were written. The letters – sent t French sailrs by wives, siblings and parents – never made it t their intended recipients, but they ffer rare insight int the lives f families affected by war.
Sent between 1757-58 during the Seven Years War, the letters were mstly addressed t the crew f the Galatée warship, and the French pstal administratin frwarded them frm prt t prt in hpes f reaching the sailrs. But when the British Navy captured the Galatée in April 1758, French authrities frwarded the batch f letters t England.
The 104 letters are written n heavy, expensive paper, and sme have red wax seals. Renaud Mrieux, the histrian f the University f Cambridge, discvered them in the digital remainders f Britain's Natinal Archives. Mrieux spent mnths decding(解码) the letters, and published his findings Mnday in the French histry jurnal Annales.
In ne letter, Marguerite Lemyne, a 61-year-ld mther, sclds her sn Niclas Quesnel fr nt writing:"On the first day f the year... yu have written t yur fiancée... I think mre abut yu than yu abut any case I wish yu a happy new year filled with blessings f the Lrd. I think I am fr the tmb, I have been ill fr three weeks. Give my cmpliments t Varin, it is nly his wife wh gives me yur news."
"The sn wh's at sea is nly writing t his fiance, and the mther gets really annyed abut that," Mrieux said. The letters als demnstrate the difficulty f lng-distance cmmunicatin in the 1750s. Many f the senders, like Lemyne, were likely illiterate and dictated their messages t a cpyist. Mrever, sending a letter t a ship cnstantly n the mve during wartime was difficult and unreliable, and families ften sent multiple cpies f letters t different prts.
In an effrt t maximize the chances f successfully cmmunicating with a lved ne, each letter had multiple messages crammed nt the paper, ften frm different families and addressed t multiple crewmates. T Mrieux, the letters shw hw cmmunities stay resilient(有韧性的) in times f crisis.
