一、时间状态
常常和表示过去的时间状语连用
Then 那时，at the time在那时
This time yesterday 昨天的这个时候
At ten yesterday 昨天晚上十点
用另一个表示过去的动作来确定时间状态
比如：when yu called me yesterday.
例句：-what are yu ding at nine last night？-I was watching TV at that time. 昨天晚上十点钟你在干嘛，那个时间我正在看电视。
He was reading when i came in .当我进来时，他在读书。
I was ding my hmewrk while my parents were watching TV。
3.过去进行时常常和always 等表示频率的副词连用，表示过去频繁发生的习惯性动作。有感情色彩。
例句：Lily was always changing her mind。莉莉总在改变主意。（不以为然）
He was always ringing me up. 他老是给我打电话。（厌烦）
She was always wrking. 她总是不停地干活。（赞扬）
二、一般过去时和过去进行时的区别
They played basketball yesterday.（一般过去时）
They were playing basketball at 4：00PM yesterday.（过去进行时）
强调动作在过去某个时间或某段时间正在进行时，不明确是否结束，用过去进行时。一般过去时的时间点没有过去进行时的时间点明确。
例句：He ate all the cakes yesterday .他昨天吃完了蛋糕。
He was eating cakes at this time yesterday.昨天这个时候他正在吃蛋糕。
三、When 和while的区别
主句的动作先于从句的动作发生，而且持续的时间较长，主句用过去进行时，从句用一般过去时，此时从句用when引导
例句：My mm was cking when I came back hme.昨天我回来时，我妈妈正在做饭。
What were yu ding when I rang yu up?昨天我给你打电话时你正在做什么。
从句的动作先于主句的动作发生，而且持续的时间较长，从句用过去进行时，主句用一般过去时，此时从句用when引导
例句：My mm came back hme when I was playing cmputer games.
我妈妈昨天回来时，我正在玩游戏。
主句和从句的动作同时发生，或者不强调先后顺序，主句从句可以同时使用过去进行时，此时的时间状语从句一般有while来引导。
例句：My mm was cking while I was ding my hmewrk。
注意：When和while 的用法总结
while 引导的时间状语从句中，其谓语动词只能是延续性的，表示与主句中的谓语动词同时发生或存在；
when 引导的从句和主句的动作可以是同时发生，也可以是先后发生，可与延续性或非延续性动词连用。
when 和 while 的区别还有： while 引导的时间状语从句多用进行时态，when 引导的时间状语从句多用一般时态。
