In a few years, this area will becme a natural habitat and a playgrund fr animals and residents. This peaceful area didn't appear naturally, but thrugh planning and actin taken by Catlin Gabel's Tiny Frest prject launched by teacher Patrick Walsh.
Frests typically take hundreds f years t mature, with fur stages f grwth. “Tiny frests flatten ut time thrugh the planting f all fur layers (层),” Walsh explained. The end result is a fastgrwing, native frest in abut 20 years. Over 600 plants frm 43 species will be planted in the tiny frest, the first ne in Oregn.
Walsh was inspired t build a tiny frest after hearing abut this idea, which emerged in Japan and has taken hld in Nrth America. He shared his visin with senirs in his class. The senirs researched tiny frests and made a prpsal resulting in Clean Water Services dnating 60 trees and $5,000 frm the Natinal Oceanic and Atmspheric Administratin. Armed with these resurces, Walsh and the students started wrking. “Smething I didn't really expect was the utpuring f students' enthusiasm. Seeing students frm all grades vlunteered t cntribute t the ‘dirty wrk’ really blew me away,” Walsh said.
Senir Megan Cver has been at the schl since the first grade. “I'll graduate after wrking n this prject, which is surely sad, but it's really rewarding and great t be a part f this prject and t d my bit. We're creating this educatinal space fr many yung kids,” Cver said.
Walsh summed up his gal f the prject, which is t build a place where students can enjy and learn abut nature. “The frest will bviusly nt slve climate change, but it wuld deserve the effrts if the kids think abut climate change and remember the imprtance f refrestatin and trees when they lk utside at the frest.”

[2023·唐山市模拟]Math anxiety is far frm uncmmn, but t ften, thse wh fear the subject simply avid it. Research frm The University f Chicag ffers evidence fr the link between math anxiety and avidance.
Studying nearly 500 adults thrugh a cmputer prgram called the ChseAndSlve Task (CAST), the researchers gave participants a chice between math and wrd prblems labeled “easy” and “hard”. The easy prblems were always wrth tw cents, while the hard prblems were wrth up t six cents. They als infrmed participants the cmputer task wuld mdify the questins in the prcess f testing based n their abilities, enabling them t handle abut 70% f the hard prblems.
Althugh participants attempted hard wrd prblems when prmised higher mnetary prizes, they rarely chse t d the same fr math prblems. “We fund we culdn't even pay mathanxius individuals t d difficult math prblems,” researcher Rzek says.
The findings als cntradict a widely held belief that feeling anxius abut math and aviding mathrelated prblems is rted in being bad at math. “If yu take tw students gd at math, the mathanxius ne will d wrse at math than the ne that isn't anxius.”
Such a mentality des mre than stpping peple frm taking calculus curses r pursuing a career in STEM. It can affect everyday interactins with math—like leaving a tip in a restaurant. But all is nt lst. Reframing their anxiety frm negative t psitive culd help mathanxius peple reengage. Giving thse anxius abut siting exams guidance may lead them t perfrm better. “Telling them if yu're anxius, this is yur bdy getting yu ready t perfrm and fcus,” Rzek says. Anther path may be t create early psitive experiences arund math. Fr example, telling stries featuring math and tackling prblems arund the stry may be helpful.
8.What des the underlined wrd “mdify” mean in Paragraph 2?
    A.Adjust. B.Design.
    C.Slve. D.Add.
    9.What des the study find?

[2023·厦门市高三质量检测]The burning f cal may be falling ut f favr as a means f generating heat and electricity, but that desn't mean it n lnger has valuable uses. The team f King Abdullah University f Science and Technlgy (KAUST) is using cal fr a new ecnmy.
The prject is led by Assciate Prfessr Andrea Fratalcchi. While reading abut challenges f ending the use f cal in pwer generatin, Fratalcchi was struck by a nvel pssible use fr cal. “Why dn't we use cal fr seawater desalinatin (脱盐)?” Fratalcchi recalls, still excited. Capable f taking in sunlight, the black mineral adds t the list f substances in dark clrs serving the purpse, which the team is n a lngstanding hunt fr.
Fratalcchi and his team began t explre the use f a material knwn as carbnized cmpressed pwder (压缩粉末), als CCP, which is created by breaking cal int pwder, and then pressing that pwder back int a slid that has mre tiny hles—it can als be made int a desired shape. The team cmbined CCP with natural cttn fibers, prducing a blck which was then placed within a seawater cntaining cntainer, with its bttm tuching water surface. While sunlight heated the black surface f the blck, the inside fibers helped water flw in and thrugh the blck frm the bttm. When that liquid water reached the ht surface, it turned int steam which rse and cndensed (冷凝) n the inside f a specially shaped cver. That cndensatin then flew dwn the cver and was cllected as fresh, drinkable water. The seawater's salt cntent remained behind within the CCP. A simple wash was enugh t remve mst f it, s the material culd be reused multiple times.
KAUST has partnered with the Dutch startup PERA Cmplexity t prmte the technlgy. The material will see its first use in a pilt plant in Brazil. “CCP is abundant in nature and reasnable t use, besides being lightweight and highly changeable,” says team member Marcella Bnifazi. “The device's desalinatin rate per unit f raw material is tw t three times higher than that f any ther slar desalinatin system, but it prduces fresh water at arund nethird the expense f current stateftheart technlgies.”
12.What is Fratalcchi's team seeking fr?
    A.Fibers functining well with CCP.
    B.Green ways t desalinate seawater.
    C.Nvel industrial applicatins f cal.
    D.Darkclred materials fr desalinatin.
13.Hw did the team get water int the CCP device?
    A.By placing cttn fibers inside.
    B.By heating its black surface.
C.By making the pwder int a blck.
    D.By installing a special cver.
14.Which feature f CCP des Marcella Bnifazi stress?
    A.Being ecfriendly. B.Being lwcst.
    C.Being efficient. D.Being flexible.
15.What des the text mainly talk abut?
A.Scientists have made a breakthrugh in desalinatin.
B.Cal finds new use in desalinatin technlgy.
C.CCP is expected t be in reallife use sn.
D.Drinkable water will be gt frm the sea.
