A study published recently shws that tmat fruits are able t transmit alerts t their mther plant when attacked by caterpillars
Plants have a large number f chemical and hrmnal signaling pathways, which are generally transmitted thrugh the sap (树液). Given the fact that fruits just hang frm the main plant befre ultimately falling ff and sap typically nly runs frm the plant t the fruit — nt back and frth between the tw — it has lng been unclear whether r nt fruits can transmit infrmatin t the plant.
T address that questin, scientists at Brazil’s Federal University f Peltas placed tmat plants in a Faraday cage. Electrdes (电极) were attached t the ends f the plants’ branches at the pints where they cnnected t the fruits. Then they measured electrical respnses within the branches befre, during and after a 24-hur perid in which the fruits were attacked by caterpillars. Machine-learning-based algrithms were used t identify patterns in the signals.
It was fund that there was a “clear difference” between the signals befre and after caterpillar attacks. Additinally. defensive bichemical respnses were bserved thrughut the plants’ bdies, suggesting that they had been triggered by signals sent by the fruits. There searchers gave the fllwing explanatin. The tmat fruit, sensing a nearby insect, released electrical signals t reach the rest f the plant. These warnings impulses were received by the main plant and as a result, the rest f the plant gt prepared t fight ff the unwanted invaders. The tmat fruit made sure that the plant prduced chemicals that were unpleasant t taste, s that hungry caterpillars stayed ff the fruit.
The scientists nw plan n investigating whether ther fruiting plants behave in the same manner as tmates, and whether their fruits respnd t threats ther than insects. They believe understanding hw the plant interacts with its fruits, and the fruits amng themselves, may bring insights int hw t make use f this cmmunicatin fr enhancing fruit quality, resistance t pests and shelf life after harvest.
