Have yu ever had the urge t pen a bk and stick yur nse straight int the pages? The smell f ld bks can refresh any bk lvers. We dn't knw why, but it is just pleasant t us.
Describing the smell can be a challenge. And mere adjectives will likely be f little use t future generatins f histrians trying t dcument, understand r reprduce the scent f slwly decaying bks. Nw, that task may have just gtten easier thanks t the Histric Bk OdrWheel.
In ne experiment, researchers asked visitrs at the histric library t describe the scents they smelled. All the visitrs selected adjectives like “wdy”, “smky” and“ earthy” frm the list, and described the smell's intensity and perceived pleasantness. In anther experiment, the study authrs presented visitrs t the Birmingham Museum with eight smells-ne f which was an unlabeled histric bk scent and seven were nn-bkish, such as cffee, chclate, fish market and dirty clthes. The researchers then had thse museumgers describe the histric bk smell. The tp tw respnses? Chclate and cffee. “Yu tend t use familiar assciatins t describe smells when they are unlabeled," study authr Cecilia Bembibre says.
The team even analyzed the vlatile rganic cmpunds (VOCs) in the bk and the library. Using the data frm the chemical analysis and visitrs' smell descriptins, the researchers created the Histric Bk Odr Wheel t dcument the “histric library scents”. Main categries, such as “sweet/spicy”, fill the inner circle f the wheel; descriptrs, such as “chclate/ cream”, fill the middle; and the chemical cmpunds likely t be the smelly surce, like furfural, fill the uter circle. The researchers want the bk dr wheel t be a tl that “untrained nses” can use t identify smells and the cmpunds causing them, which culd apprach cnservatrs' cncerns abut material cmpsitin and histric paper preservatin. And hpefully, scents f the past can be reprduced in the lab smeday and museums and histrians can use it t recnstruct a past we can n lnger smell.
