As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in prcessing xygen as it used t be. In mst peple the first signs shw up in their 50s r early 60s. And amng peple wh dn’t exercise, the changes can start even sner.
“Think f a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer fr 20 years and it will becme dry and easily brken,” says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University f Texas. That’s what happens t the heart. Frtunately fr thse in midlife, Levine is finding that even if yu haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape nw may help imprve yur aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected vlunteers aged between 45 and 64 wh did nt exercise much but were therwise healthy. Participants were randmly divided int tw grups. The first grup participated in a prgram f nn-aerbic exercise-balance training and weight training-three times a week. The secnd grup did high-intensity aerbic (有氧) exercise under the guidance f a trainer fr fur r mre days a week. After tw years, the secnd grup saw remarkable imprvements in heart health.
“We tk these 50-year-ld hearts and turned the clck back t 30-r 35-year-ld hearts,” says Levine. “And the reasn they gt s much strnger and fitter was that their hearts culd nw fill a lt better and pump a lt mre bld during exercise.” But the hearts f thse wh participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.
“The sweet spt in life t start exercising, if yu haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70-year-lds thrugh a yearlng exercise training prgram, and nthing happened t them at all.”
Dr. Nieca Gldberg, a spkeswman fr the American Heart Assciatin, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs t be repeated with far larger grups f peple t determine exactly which aspects f an exercise rutine make the biggest difference.
    28. What des Levine want t explain by mentining the rubber band?
    A. The right way f exercising.B. The aging prcess f the heart.
    C. The difficulty f keeping fit.D. The causes f a heart attack.
    29. What des Levine’s research find?
    A. Middle-aged hearts get yunger with aerbic exercise.
    B. High-intensity exercise is mre suitable fr the yung.
C It is never t late fr peple t start taking exercise.
    D. The mre exercise we d, the strnger ur hearts get.
30 What des Dr. Nieca Gldberg suggest?
    A. Making use f the findings.B. Interviewing the study participants.
    C. Cnducting further research.D. Clarifying the purpse f the study.
    D
The biggest criticism(批评) f scial netwrking is that ur yung peple are lsing their ffline friends t nline friends. In fact there is a lt f research that shws these criticisms are generally unfunded. Research by Allen et al. fund that peple are nt replacing ffline friends with nline cmpanins but are using them t supprt their ffline relatinships. They als fund that ur nline friendships actually allw us t have discussins with a much mre diverse set f peple than in the real wrld and imprve ur psychlgical happiness.
Hwever, there is ne part f scial netwrking that is deeply wrrying. We find urselves in a hyper-cnnected wrld where peple access scial media day and night, excited t make annuncements abut the tiniest details f their lives. Research is starting t shw that this culture is negatively affecting nt ur friendships but ur character.
Prfessr Larry D. Rsen, in his bk iDisrder, presents evidence that scial netwrking is turning us int narcissists(自恋者). He says that yung peple wh veruse scial netwrking sites can becme vain, aggressive, and shw anti-scial behavir in their ffline lives. But perhaps an even mre disturbing effect is that ne f ur mst basic emtins seems t be disappearing—empathy. This is the emtin that bnds us tgether; it allws us t see the wrld frm ur friends’ pints f view. Withut it, we are far less able t cnnect and frm meaningful adult relatinships.
Sherry Turkle, a prfessr f scial sciences at MIT, suggests that peple are n lnger cmfrtable being alne. This is smething cnfirmed by a study where 200 university students were asked t g withut scial media fr 24 hurs. Many admitted an addictin t their nline scial netwrk; mst cmplained that they felt cut ff frm family and friends. But being alne is a time, Turkle argues, when we self-reflect and get in tuch with wh we really are. It is nly when we d this that we can make meaningful friendships with thers. She believes, as is the title f her bk, that we are simply “Alne Tgether”.
These ptential changes in ur characters are rather disturbing. If nthing is dne, ur yung peple culd well be in truble. Therefre, suggestins abut ways t encurage ur yung peple t avid the prblems f scial netwrking shuld be made, s they can develp the kinds f friendships that are required t grw int well-adjusted and happy adults.
    31. The underlined wrd “unfunded” in Paragraph I prbably means ________.
    A. undubtedB. falseC. acceptableD. illegal
    32. In this passage, the authr mainly argues that ________.
    A. internet culture causes varius prblems
    B. we are lsing sme mst imprtant emtins
    C. nline friendships d gd t ffline friendships
    D. scial netwrking affects yung peple’s persnalities
    33. Accrding t Sherry Turkle, hw can we make make meaningful friendships with thers?
    A. by getting in tuch with nline friends
    B. by aviding the prblems f scial netwrking
    C. by reflecting and getting in tuch with urselves
    D. by being alne then having discussins with a much mre diverse set f peple
    34. Frm the passage, we can learn that ________.
    A. scial media have mre advantages
    B. yung peple will develp ffline friendships
    C. yung peple can’t g withut scial media
    D. we are becming unable t understand thers well

    第三部分 书面表达(共两节,32分)
    第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
    阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
Nbdy likes t feel anxius. Anxiety is amng the mst cmmn and criticized f human emtins. It seems, then, that ur effrts t cntain (克制) anxiety aren’t wrking.
As a clinical psychlgist and neurscience researcher, I believe that we mental health prfessinals have made a terrible mistake. Feeling anxius isn’t the prblem. The prblem is that we dn’t understand hw t respnd cnstructively t anxiety. That’s why it’s increasingly hard t knw hw t feel gd.
This “bad” feeling isn’t a failure f mental health. It’s a triumph (巨大胜利) f human evlutin: the ability t think abut the uncertain future and prepare fr it. Anxiety turns yu int a mental time traveler drawing yur attentin t what lies ahead. Will yu succeed r fail in that interview fr a jb yu desperately want? Anxiety prmpts (推动) yur mind and bdy int actin. Yur wrries frce yu t prepare thrughly fr the interview, while yur heart races and pumps bld t yur brain s that yu stay sharp and fcused, prepared t pursue yur gals.
Research has als shwn smething that many scientists didn’t expect: higher levels f dpamine (多巴胺) when we’re anxius. We have lng knwn that dpamine sars when an experience is pleasurable. The fact that anxiety als bsts dpamine levels pints t its rle in making psitive pssibilities int reality.
Many f us feel verwhelmed by lasting anxiety and dn’t see any benefit frm it. Treating anxiety like a disease prevents us frm distinguishing between rdinary anxiety and anxiety disrders. We need t develp a new mindset abut this misunderstd emtin. We dn’t need t like anxiety-just t use it in the right way.
    40. Why is it increasingly hard fr us t knw hw t feel gd?
    41. Hw des anxiety help ne in a jb interview?
    42. Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
Research has shwn that dpamine sars when an experience is pleasurable, but it is in lwer levels when we are anxius.
    43. Hw d yu cpe with anxiety psitively in yur daily life?(In abut 40 wrds)
