Sylvester Stallone had been a struggling actor before he achieved his great success as an actor and screenwriter, starting in 1976 with his role as boxer Rocky Balboa, in the first film of the successful Rocky series.
Stallone was so poor at one point that he sold his wife’s jewellery (珠宝). He ended up becoming homeless, sleeping in a bus station, and struggled to afford food. He even managed to get a small amount of money in his pocket by selling his dog for $25.
Soon after, Stallone decided to take his career into his own hands and write a movie role for himself. After watching a boxing match, Stallone wrote the script (脚本) for Rocky very quickly, and soon a studio wanted to buy the screenplay to make.
Stallone was offered $125,000 for the Rocky script, but the trouble for the studio was that Stallone wanted to star in the movie. Stallone was penniless, but he still turned down $125,000 in order to chase his dream.
After being refused on the idea that he “looked and talked funny”, Stallone was then offered $250,000 for the screenplay. He refused unless he could star. He was then offered $350,000. Again he refused.
The studio wanted this screenplay so badly, but was not willing to risk the money on this unknown actor. Stallone stayed strong, and eventually the studio gave him a small amount for the script and let him star.
With his fortunes up, Stallone went to buy back his dog, but the guy he sold it to would not sell him back. Stallone offered the man $1,000 for the dog, but the man refused. Eventually, the man accepted $15, 000 for the dog.
And this is why Stallone has deserved his success and why he is on this list of the best inspiring stories — because he was willing to do whatever it takes to get his dream.
24.What do we know about Stallone from paragraph 2?
A.He lived a very hard life. B.He didn’t want to work hard.
C.He made a living by selling dogs. D.He didn’t get on well with his wife.
25.Why did the studio refuse to offer the role to Stallone at first?
A.He wasn’t a responsible actor. B.He asked too much for his script.
C.They had already found a famous star. D.They thought he wasn’t the right person.
26.Which of the following best describes Stallone?
A.Humorous. B.Honest. C.Determined. D.Creative.
27.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Stallone’s Rocky Series B.Stallone’s Well-written Script
C.Stallone’s Road to Success D.Stallone’s Journey to Fortunes
【答案】24.A 25.D 26.C 27.C
【导语】本文为一篇记叙文,主要讲述了Stallone的成功之路。
24.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Stallone was so poor at one point that he sold his wife’s jewellery (珠宝). He ended up becoming homeless, sleeping in a bus station, and struggled to afford food. ( Stallone一度非常贫穷,以至于卖掉了妻子的珠宝。他最终无家可归,睡在公交站,难以支付得起食物)”可推知,Stallone过着非常艰难的生活。故选A。
25.细节理解题。根据文章第五段“After being refused on the idea that he “looked and talked funny”, Stallone was then offered $250,000 for the screenplay.( Stallone因为‘长相和谈吐都很有趣’而被拒绝,他得到了25万美元的剧本报价)”可知,工作室一开始拒绝让Stallone出演这个角色是因为他们认为他不是合适的人选。故选D。
26.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“And this is why Stallone has deserved his success and why he is on this list of the best inspiring stories — because he was willing to do whatever it takes to get his dream.(这也就是为什么Stallone值得他的成功,也是为什么他被列入这个最佳励志故事名单的原因——因为他愿意不惜一切代价来实现自己的梦想)”可推知,Stallone是一个非常有决心,意志坚定的人。故选C。
27.主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“And this is why Stallone has deserved his success and why he is on this list of the best inspiring stories — because he was willing to do whatever it takes to get his dream.(这也就是为什么Stallone值得他的成功,也是为什么他被列入这个最佳励志故事名单的原因——因为他愿意不惜一切代价来实现自己的梦想)”以及全文可知,文章主要讲述了Stallone的成功之路。由此可知,C项“Stallone的成功之路”符合文章标题。故选C。

Birds fly more efficiently by folding their wings during the upstroke (上行运动), according to a recent study led by Lund University in Sweden. The results could mean that wing-folding is the next step in increasing the advancing efficiency of flapping drones (无人机).
Even previous to birds, extinct bird-like dinosaurs benefited from folding their wings as they developed active flight. Among flying animals alive today, birds are the most efficient. This makes them particularly interesting as inspiration for the development of drones. However, determining which flapping strategy is the best requires aerodynamic studies of various ways of flapping the wings. Therefore, a Swedish research team has constructed a robotic wing that can achieve just that — flapping like a bird, and beyond.
“We have built a robotic wing that flap more like a bird than previous robots. By measuring the performance of the wing in our wind tunnel, we have studied how different ways of achieving the wing upstroke affect force and energy in flight,” says Christoffer. He adds that “The new robotic wing can be used to answer questions about bird flight that would be impossible simply by observing flying birds. Research into the flight ability of living birds is limited to the flapping movement that the bird actually uses.” The research explains why birds flap the way they do, by finding out which movement patterns create the most force and are the most efficient.
Based on the result, there are many potential uses for drones where these insights can be put to good use. “Flapping drones could be used in many fields, like delivering goods, but they would need to be efficient enough and able to lift the extra weight this involves. How the wings move is of great importance for performance, so this is where our research could come in handy,” concludes Christoffer.
28.How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By raising an opinion. B.By giving an example.
C.By stating a study result. D.By introducing an invention.
29.Why did the team construct a robotic wing?
A.To collect the flying data of birds.
B.To decide the best way of flapping.
C.To prove the advantages of drones.
D.To find out the most efficient flying animals.
30.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.The research has some limitations.
B.The research focused on birds flapping.
C.The robotic wing improves birds’ flight.
D.The robotic wing performs better than birds.
31.What may Christoffer agree?
A.The drone has been widely used.
B.The research needs more support.
C.Flapping wings are of great importance.
D.The research may have many applications.

Climate change in the coming decades could lead to an increase in cases of kidney stones(肾结石), according to a research by scientists in the United States.
A research team from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia knew from previous studies that high temperatures and dehydration (脱水) increase the risk of developing kidney stones. The researchers said incidence (发生率) of the condition has increased in the last 20 years.
The scientists created a model to estimate the impact of heat on future kidney stone presentations in the southeastern US state of South Carolina, which has a higher incidence of kidney stone disease. The model predicted that the number of cases will increase between 2.2 percent and 3.9 percent by the year 2089, depending on projected daily temperatures under two climate change circumstances. In the first case, greenhouse gas emissions (排放物) are cut to an middle level as humans shift to using lower-emissions sources of energy, while in the second, emissions continue at the current rate. Meanwhile, in the first case, average temperatures increase by 2.3℃ by 2100, compared with 3.6℃ in the second. These projections were taken from studies made by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
In comments with a news release, Gregory E Tasian, a urologist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and senior author of the study, said, “While it is impossible to predict with certainty how future policies will slow or speed greenhouse gas emission and anthropogenic (人为的) climate change, and to know exactly what future daily temperatures will be, our analysis suggests that a warming planet will likely cause an increased burden of kidney stone disease on healthcare systems. As researchers, we have a duty to explore the burden of climate change on human health.”
32.Why does the author talk about temperature increase?
A.To find the reason of climate change.
B.To estimate the burden of kidney stones.
C.To predict the strength of greenhouse gas emissions.
D.To confirm the increasing incidence of kidney stones.
33.How did the scientists start the study?
A.By creating a model. B.By predicting the effect.
C.By collecting information. D.By measuring temperatures.
34.What can be inferred about global warming?
A.It will increase daily temperatures greatly.
B.It will be predicted by the model accurately.
C.It will likely have bad effects on human health.
D.It will be certainly controlled by future polices.
35.What is the scientists’ attitude to the impact of climate change on kidney stones?
A.Ambiguous. B.Concerned.
C.Cautious. D.Doubtful.
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.C 35.B

35.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“our analysis suggests that a warming planet will likely cause an increased burden of kidney stone disease on healthcare systems. As researchers, we have a duty to explore the burden of climate change on human health.( 我们的分析表明,地球变暖可能会增加医疗系统中肾结石疾病的负担。作为研究人员,我们有责任探索气候变化对人类健康的负担。)”可知,科学家们认为气候变化对肾结石影响是令人担忧的。故选B。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Most people assume that the human brain is set on “automatic”-that means it learns all by itself. ____36____ We need to train ourselves to actively take part in the learning process. These kinds of learning behaviours are called “active learning”.
Listen to the outer voice. There are two kinds of voices: the inner voice and the outer voice. Your inner voice expresses your personal opinions, while the outer voice tells you about opinions from what you hear. ____37____ If you keep paying too much attention to it, you risk missing important information. Instead, active learners are open-minded and focus on what the speaker is saying, not on what their brain is saying.
Asking questions is the easiest way to promote active learning. When you get information from someone, ask questions about the topic. The answers will lead you to further learning, and the act of working out questions will help you achieve a higher level of understanding. ____38____
Get to the truth. ____39____. They attempt to find the truth at the heart of each idea. Even when an idea sounds entirely unlikely, there may be an aspect of it that is based on truth. So if someone says dinosaurs still exist today, think about why they believe this.
____40____ Many people miss out on learning opportunities because they let their feelings get in the way. They ignore what is said because of who the speaker is. This goes the other way as well - do not just assume that some people are always right because of who they are or just because they are your friends.
A.Focus on the message.
B.This isn’t always true.
C.This is human nature, after all.
D.In short: Do not stop being curious.
E.Active learners do not accept everything they learn.
F.If you find your inner voice difficult to control, argue with it.
G.Your inner voice can be useful, but it can also get in the way of learning.
【答案】36.B 37.G 38.D 39.E 40.A

Even when an idea sounds entirely unlikely, there may be an aspect of it that is based on truth.(他们试图在每个想法的核心找到真相。
40.根据下文“Many people miss out on learning opportunities because they let their feelings get in the way. They ignore what is said because of who the speaker is.(许多人错过了学习机会,因为他们让自己的感情挡道了。他们因为演讲者是谁而忽略了所说的话。)”可知本段主要说的是要专注,A项“专注于信息。”符合题意,故选择A项。

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
With my parents away on a business trip, I planned to spend a quiet weekend at home. But when my friend Chickie and Dom, invited me to join them for an afternoon at the beach, I was attracted. “I had an asthma(哮喘) attack yesterday, and it really tired me out,” I warned them. “So I’ll probably just lie out on the sand.”
A few hours later, relaxing under a sun umbrella after a picnic lunch, I was glad I’d come. Chickie and Dom went for a swim. They liked to go far out into the sea. I was bathed in the sun until I got too hot, then took a walk down to the shore.
For a few minutes I just let the waves lap around my legs. The ocean was smooth as glass. I could float on my back as if I were in a swimming pool, I thought, and did. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the gentle rocking.
After some time, I opened my eyes and looked around. How did I get so far from shore? I hadn’t realized how quickly the sea was carrying me.
I started swimming as quick and hard as I could. Even so I wasn’t getting any closer, and it was becoming harder to breathe. I turned around, looking for help, but I seemed to be completely alone in the water. Far off on the sand I could see people packing up their belongings. It must be nearly five o’clock, I thought. That’s when the lifeguard went off duty.
A wave slapped(拍打) my face and I swallowed salt water. My chest was already burning as I struggled to breathe. In desperation I raised one hand and waved it to get the lifeguard’s attention. “I’ll never last till he reaches me,” I thought. “They’re all too far away. I can’t get myself heard here and nobody even sees me!”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Fortunately, two young men happened to swim by.

Chickie and Dom were waiting anxiously on the beach.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Fortunately, two young men happened to swim by. “Help,” I managed to whisper. One of them grabbed my arm. The other grabbed his arm. Together they pulled me toward the shore. The lifeguard rushed into the water with his board. He tried to convince me that the water was shallow so that I could just stand. However, I shook my head. I was too exhausted to stand, much less walk. They laid me over the boar d. “You were caught in a tide,” the lifeguard said as the three of the man carried me onto the sand.
Chickie and Dom were waiting anxiously on the beach. They were scared when they saw me being carried out of the water. I showed my sincere gratitude to the two young men who saved me. And the lifeguard warned us to be careful while swimming and never swim alone. Chickie and Dom took care of me and made sure I was okay. It was a quiet reminder that one should always be careful and never underestimate the power of nature, even on a supposedly gentle day at the beach.
