Recently,this tk him t Bundary Waters Cane Area Wilderness in nrtheastern Minnesta. N cars,mtr bats,electricity r telephne lines are allwed in the nemillinacre area.But listening back t the recrding,Mikkelsen can hear the lw hum(嗡嗡声)f a cmmercial plane flying far away.
Quiet Parks Internatinal hasn't yet decided if Bundary Waters Cane Area Wilderness meets its criteria—it's ne f 260 ptential sites arund the wrld that the rganizatin is currently explring.The team will analyze the sund recrdings frm each lcatin and cnsider them alngside ther data.
In recent years,the wrld has been getting luder,with cities and twns expanding and an increasing number f nises cming frm cars,airplanes r ships.But during the COVID19 pandemic,there has been mmentary delay.In 2020,glbal air travel was dwn by 60% and rad transprt decreased by almst half.Scientists in Eurpe fund that nise caused by humans fell by up t 50% after lckdwns were carried ut.
“Peple enjyed the silence,”says Mikkelsen.“There were n airplanes in the sky and cars weren't n the street.It was an incredible thing t be able t hear the wrld,all f a sudden,free frm nise pllutin,”he says.Since the start f the pandemic,Quiet Parks Internatinal says it has experienced a huge increase in interest in quiet places.“I hpe that we can take that desire fr a wrld with less nise frward,”says Mikkelsen,“and appreciate the spts we have,where we can g and nt experience nise pllutin.”
