From a young age, I was very interested in language. I remember a holiday in Spain when I was 7. Two boys asked if I spoke Norwegian. When I couldn’t make a reply, they ran off, leaving me upset. Back home I searched shops for old language books and enjoyed trying all these different words to express what was in my head. I thought it was amazing, and still do.
At university, I did a combined languages degree, studying French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. From then on, it became a way of life. After graduation, I worked as an au pair (互惠生) in Germany, and finally studied German. I cycled to the Netherlands, picking up Dutch. It turned out that speaking a language abroad with local people was an ideal way to learn, especially in a time before the Internet.
Traveling to learn a language became an adventure (探险)—it came with huge excitement and of course lonelier, more complex moments. I have found that the speed of leaning depends on the language and how much attention I pay to it. If it is similar to a language I already speak, I find I can use it within weeks, although perhaps not so well.
Languages have had a big influence on my personal life, too. In 2003, during a train ride in the Balkans, I met my future wife—she is Macedonian (马其顿人), with a south-east Slavic languages and literature degree.
I’ve studied more than 50 languages now. I generally use 15 weekly and more than 30 in a year. I also support native and endangered languages. Having a world of languages out there and not learning them is like watching TV in black and white and not knowing there is color. They will continue to enrich me for a lifetime.
The most important thing about learning languages is the ability to build bridges with other people. They allow you to experience life differently.
48.In which order was the article written?
A.Space order. B.Time order. C.From specific to general. D.From general to specific.
49.What is the correct order of the following sentences?
① I studied four languages at the same time.
② I support native and endangered languages.
③ I met my future wife during a train ride in the Balkans.
④ I traveled, worked and studied languages in different countries
⑤ I found it amazing to express my feelings and thoughts in a new language.
A.⑤①③④② B.⑤④①③② C.⑤①④②③ D.⑤①④③②
50.What is the best title for this article?
A.Leaning a language B.A language lover’s life
C.Talking with the world D.Traveling to learn a language
C
Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: music improves certain language abilities in the brain. Here, we look at two examples.
Music and Hearing
A recent study by researcher Nina Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
Musicians hear better, says Kraus, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra (管弦乐队). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument (乐器) and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and ignore the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to concentrate on (集中注意力于) certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
Music and Speaking
Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with patients who have stroke (中风). Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to activate (激活) different parts of the brain, including the damaged parts. This somehow helps patients to use that part of the brain again.
Understanding the Results
Music improves concentration, memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better. Playing an instrument or singing, says Nina Kraus, can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older. Music, she adds, is not only enjoyable, it’s also good for us in many other ways.
51.What does they refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.Orchestra musicians. B.Instruments. C.The sounds of the orchestra. D.Violinists.
52.How does Gottfried Schlaug help stroke patients speak?
A.By getting them to play an instrument. B.By asking them to sing words.
C.By playing music for them. D.By repeating their names and other information.
53.Which type of improvement is NOT mentioned in the reading?
A.Memory. B.Sleep. C.Listening skills. D.Language ability.

Have you ever bought something and then changed your mind? For Alison Jenson, 15, this used to happen several times a week. Alison was a shopaholic. She just couldn’t stop shopping and she loved special offers.
Alison’s bedroom is full of stuff. “I’ve been to every shop in Birmingham, I think,” says Alison. She picks up some earrings. The labels are still on them. “These were half price,” she says. “I’ve never won them.” Alison’s problem wasn’t just jewellery. She also bought a lot of clothes, though not many shoes, because they were usually too expensive. She has also bought lots of other small things—like 20 new covers for her phone. She hasn’t used any of them.
According to experts, we all feel excited after we buy something new. For shopaholics, it’s a little different. Soon after they buy something, they think they’ve made a mistake and start to feel unhappy. So they buy themselves something else to feel happier.
Psychologists (心理学家)first described the problems of shopaholics in 1915. However, there was very little research on the subject until recently. Now, doctors think thousands of people suffer from the problem, and the situation is getting worse. There are also more teenage shopaholics now, although most young people don’t have enough money to go shopping very regularly.
Alison knew she had a problem. “I often bought something every day. Usually it was something small, but I just needed to buy it,” she says. “I spent money that I got for my birthday, and when I was short of cash, I borrowed money from friends or my parents. When I couldn’t go shopping, I felt anxious. Then one day, my parents just looked at all the stuff in my room and said, This is crazy!I knew they were right. I needed some big changes in my life.”
Alison now gets help with her problem and feels she has changed. She no longer thinks she’s a shopaholic. “When I want to buy something in a shop, I ask myself two questions,” she says. “Do I need it? Can I afford it? The answer to both questions is usually ‘no’, so I walk away. It’s great!”
54.What do experts say about shopaholics?
A.Shopaholics feel sad when they are shopping.
B.Shopaholics soon feel unhappy after they have bought something.
C.Shopaholics feel more excited than other people when they shop.
D.Shopping is the only way shopaholics can feel happy.
55.The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.
A.psychologists B.doctors C.Alison’s parents D.Alison’s friends
56.Which word can best describe Alison’s feeling at the end of the passage?
A.Glad. B.Worried. C.Embarrassed. D.Moved.
57.The best title for the passage above might be ________.
A.Shop Till You Drop! B.Shopping Makes Me Happy!
C.You’d Better Shop Less! D.I Can Stop Shopping Now!
