In many organizations, perhaps the best way to complete certain new projects is to gather a group of people into a team.
Having a team of people attack a project offers several advantages. First of all, a group of people have more knowledge, more experience, and more skills in different fields than any single individual (个体) does. A group can work more quickly whenever the task is assigned. And a group can come up with highly creative solutions (解决办法) to problems because of the numbers of people who take part and greater resources they have.
Also, a group is more likely to make risky decisions which a single individual might not make. This is because the group spreads responsibility (责任) to all the members. And thus, if the decision turns out to be wrong, no single individual can be held accountable (负有责任的).
Then, taking part in a group can be very rewarding for members of the team. Team members who have a voice in making a decision will no doubt feel better about doing the work than they might do what is imposed (把……强加于) on them by others.
Last but not least, the team member has a much better chance to “shine”. This is because they get more chances to have his or her contributions and ideas not only recognized (认可), but recognized as highly important. This kind of high-recognition is because a team’s achievement or influence is much higher than the individual’s. A team can finish and achieve what the individual can’t do. And a team can reach a height which the individual can’t reach.
44. How many advantages of a team are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
45. The first paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A. many organizations gather people into teams
B. it is good to form a team to complete tasks
C. new projects are often sent to large groups
D. people would like to communicate in groups
46. Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraphs 2&3?
A. A group of people are sure to be highly creative.
B. A team always finish more tasks than individuals.
C. It’s difficult for a team to make creative decisions.
D. The members of a group can share responsibility.
47. A team is worth taking part in because ________.
A. individuals do not have rights to make decisions
B. team members have better chances to be excellent
C. team members are easily respected by other people
D. individuals cannot achieve goals or reach a height
C
Being sad or in a low mood is a normal (正常的) part of life. Many people feel down from time to time. For example, when people face challenging events in their lives, such as financial (经济的) difficulty or major changes, it’s common to feel down. But in most cases, the bad feelings slowly disappear.
As for depression (抑郁症), however, the bad mood lasts for weeks, months, or even longer because it is a mental (精神的) illness. As the World Health Organization (WHO) noted, depression is a mood disorder. It shows in different ways, including loss of interest in normal activities and feelings of low self-growth. It often lasts for a long time and greatly harms a person’s ability at work or school or in the daily life. People with depression usually don’t like to talk about their problems with others. More seriously, depression may even lead to the act of killing oneself.
“Depression is not just a bout (一阵) of sadness or a sign of weakness, and you can’t just simply stop feeling depressed,” said the health news website www.mayoclinic.com.
But depression is not a person’s problem. It’s also more common than most people think. It is hurting about 280 million people around the world, according to WHO.
Though depression is worrying, we don’t have to be afraid of it. Depression can be treatable by getting professional (专业的) help, taking medicine or a mixed treatment of both. In fact, when you begin to feel the danger of depression, you can try to deal with it early by yourself. Listening to music, doing some sports and drawing some pictures might help you feel better. Another useful way is talk therapy. When we are attacked by a low mood, having a conversation with others is of great help. Being honest about how we feel does not make us weak; it makes us human.
48. Who is most probably experiencing depression?
A. Lily, who is going to have an important exam and hasn’t slept well for 3 days.
B. May, who dislikes her new school and has complained to her parents 3 times.
C. Ben, who thinks life worthless and has cried alone over 3 times a week in the past month.
D. Tom, who finds subjects hard and has talked to his teacher about it 3 times this week.
49. What does the writer think of depression?
A. Normal and nothing serious. B. Uncommon although harmful.
C. Uncommon and untreatable. D. Treatable although worrying.
50. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Knowledge of depression. B. Ways of treating depression.
C. Reasons for depression. D. Results of depression.

Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy. He was the oldest of five children in a worker’s family. He enjoyed going to the sea when he was a young boy.
He heard that there was a lot of gold and other valuable things in East India. He wanted to find a short way to get to the Indies by ship. On August 3, 1492, he sailed toward the west from Palos, Spain with three ships. After many days, the sailors had covered a long distance on the sea and were ready to turn around for home when they saw land, an island Columbus named San Salvador. He thought he had found the Indies and called the people he saw there “Indians”. When they got to Cuba, he mistakenly thought he was in Japan. The world was a lot larger than he thought.
In his life, he made four trips across the ocean. His 13-year-old son, Ferdinand, went with him during the last time. He returned to Spain in 1504. Columbus did not become rich as he had hoped. At the end of his life he only had a pension (退休金) the king and the queen had given him because he was the first to reach the New World. He died in 1506, still believing that he had found a new route to East India and that he had reached Asia.
Columbus didn’t get to school very much, but he learned to read and write Spanish during his travels. He also taught himself Latin because all the geography books were written in Latin. He is remembered by all not only for the New World he discovered, but also for the way he led for other explorers.
