Building with 3D printing technology is sparking widespread interest in the construction industry. Besides reducing waste and our impact on the environment, it can speed up construction from weeks, or months, to days. To see how the technology can change the world around us, here are some projects that highlight bold ideas in 3D print building.
    Instant Neighborhood
Community building takes on new meaning with the creation of a neighborhood of 3D printed homes in Tabasco, Mexico, aimed at tackling global homelessness. American non-profit New Story and tech company ICON built each concrete house from start to completion in 24 hours. New Story says its aim is to provide shelter for people without homes around the world.
    Nested Housing
Shamballa is the idea of Italian 3D print construction company WASP. This project uses soil and straw to build a home in days that cost only 48 Euros in materials and energy. Its round designs are based on the wasp (黄蜂) nest. Each home features a laboratory with a desktop 3D printer for making furniture, artistic objects and more.
    Think Schools
African island state Madagascar is hosting one of the world’s most forward-thinking school building projects. Non-profit Thinking Huts is using 3D print technology to provide schools where children have little or no access to education. Schools are built using local materials and low carbon concrete in under a week.
    Concrete Steps
Researchers at the Swiss University ETH Zurich used concrete 3D printing to build the 16 metre long curved Striatus footbridge in a couple of days. The project used 500 layers of concrete and 53 hollow blocks, held in place by compression (压缩). This reduces materials by up to 70 per cent, and the entire bridge can be pulled down and recycled.
    1. What could be the inspiration behind the design of Nested Housing?
    A. A featured laboratory. B. A forward-thinking school.
    C. A round wasp nest. D. A long stone bridge.
    2. Which 3D construction project can be torn down and reused?
    A. Instant Neighborhood. B. Concrete Steps.
    C. Think School. D. Nested Housing.
    3. What do these four 3D building projects have in common?
    A. They use local materials. B. They make construction faster.
    C. They are affordable to the homeless. D. They are high in cost.

Since winning the BBC Young Musician competition in 2016, Sheku Kanneh-Mason has performed at a royal wedding and released music that has topped the charts. Now he has released a new album called Song. “Because the cello (大提琴) sings,” he explains. “There are no boundaries to music,” he said. “I enjoy what Ienjoy.”
Sheku comes from an incredible musical family in which all six of his siblings (he is the third child of seven) play instruments to a high standard—yet neither parents are musicians. Every spare penny goes into the children’s musical education. The whole family practised at home, which meant he sometimes had to play cello in the bathroom.
Every Saturday, Sheku wakes up at the crack of dawn in order to catch the train to London. He uses the journey to catch up with his A-Level homework. However Sheku still finds time for his other hobbies — he enjoys football, table tennis and listens to a wide range of music. Sheku began to play the cello at the age of six, after attending a concert. By the time he was nine, he had achieved Grade 8 and earned the top marks in the country. Since then he has won numerous awards.
“I would love to inspire more diversity in young people taking up classical music.”
Sheku is also passionate about building better opportunities for young people of any background to learn music at school. “You might never want to go on to become a musician, but it’s still so important. I’d love to help bring more music to schools.”
Many schools are having to cut music lessons to save money, which Kanneh-Mason believes deprives young people. “Children should study music for music’s sake,” he said. “It connects the emotional side of your brain — the creativity, the empathy (understanding how other people feel)— with something practical. To bring them together is a very powerful thing.”
    4. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
    A. Sheku’s hard work and talent. B. Sheku’s family’s music atmosphere.
    C. Music talent of Sheku and his siblings. D. Sheku’s parents’ support for music education.
    5. What can be inferred about Sheku from Paragraph 3?
    A. He is social and energetic. B. He has a lot of homework.
    C. He stood out when young. D. He prefers sports to music.
    6. According to Sheku, why should young people take up music?
    A. It can encourage the young when they are in difficulty.
    B. It can provide more opportunities for people at school.
    C. It can make them role models for others if they learn music.
    D. It can combine the emotional side of the brain with real situations.
    7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
    A. To advertise a competition. B. To introduce a young cellist.
    C. To stress the value of teachers. D. To attach importance to music.
B 5. C 6. D 7. B

根据第三段中“By the time he was nine, he had achieved Grade 8 and earned the top marks in the country. Since then he has won numerous awards.(到他九岁的时候,他已经升到了八年级,并获得了全国最高分。从那以后,他赢得了无数奖项)”可知,Sheku 在九岁的时候已经达到了八级水平并且荣获无数奖项,由此推断出在小时候他非常的杰出。故选C。
    【6题详解】

The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content. A small step in the right direction, says Jacqueline Sperling, a psychologist who works with youths that experience anxiety disorders.
Social media has a reinforcing nature. The platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and even physical illnesses. But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick?
“The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites,” Sperling says. “When the outcome is unpredictable, the behavior is more likely to repeat.” To boost self-esteem and feel a sense of belonging in their social circles, people post content with the hope of receiving positive feedback. FOMO--fear of missing out--f also plays a role. Teenagers hope to keep track of friends’ activities. Missing experiences can create anxiety and depression.
The earlier teens start using social media, the greater impact they have on mental health. This is especially true for females. While teen males tend to express aggression physically, females do so by excluding others and sharing hurtful comments. Social media increases the opportunity for such harmful interactions.
In addition, social media puts a lens filter (滤镜) on appearances and reality. When there’s a filter applied to the digital world, it can be hard for teens to tell what’s real and what isn’t, which comes at a tough time for them physically and emotionally.
We can benefit from social platforms to some extent, as they allow people to stay in touch with family and friends around the world. Still, the platforms have opened a “Pandora’s box” as they continue to evolve more quickly than we can research their impact.
In addition to limiting likes, Sperling suggests social platforms consider decreasing mass sharing. Regardless of how likely social media giants, are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.
    8. Why does Instagram limit likes?
    A. To share more contents. B. To increase its popularity.
    C. To ensure teens’ well-being. D. To reduce teens’ online time.
    9. What does “Pandora’s box” in Paragraph 6 imply?
    A. Social media can be double-edged. B. People benefit from social platforms.
    C. People get boxes of gifts from social platforms. D. Social media opens a door for people to. see the world.
    10. Which of the following does Sperling agree with?
    A. Its lens. help teens to tell the real world.
    B. Its unpredictable outcome attracts frequent visits.
    C. It is helpful to teens with anxiety and depression.
    D. It has a greater impact on female teens than male, teens.
    11. What will the author most probably talk about next?
A Advice on users’ controlling mass sharing. B. Reasons for teens’ posting addictions.
    C. Negative effects of harmful interactions. D. Ways of social media giants’ management.
C 9. A 10. B 11. A
根据文章第一段第一句话“The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content.(社交媒体平台Instagram曾因限制点赞,以减少因分享内容受欢迎而产生的比较和伤害感而成为头条新闻。)” The platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and even physical illnesses. But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick? (社交媒体具有强化的本质。这些平台旨在让人上瘾,并与焦虑、抑郁甚至身体疾病有关。但是,是什么让用户回来买更多的东西,即使它真的让他们感到恶心?)”可知,社交媒体与焦虑、抑郁甚至身体疾病的产生也息息相关。同时文章的谈论对象为青少年。因此,Instagram 此举有助于青少年健康地使用社交媒体以确保其身心健康。故选C。
    【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段“We can benefit from social platforms to some extent, as they allow people to stay in touch with family and friends around the world. Still, the platforms have opened a “Pandora’s box” as they continue to evolve more quickly than we can research their impact.(在某种程度上,我们可以从社交平台中受益,因为它们允许人们与世界各地的家人和朋友保持联系。尽管如此,这些平台还是打开了一个“潘多拉的盒子”,因为它们的发展速度比我们研究它们的影响要快得多。)”前后两个句子的逻辑关系可知,社交媒体既有利也有弊。所以“潘多拉的盒子”意味着社交媒体可能是一把双刃剑。故选A。
根据第三段 ““The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites,” Sperling says. “When the outcome is unpredictable, the behavior is more likely to repeat.”(未知的结果和预期结果的可能性可以让用户留在网站上。”
根据最后一段 Sperling 建议减少大量分享以及本段最后一句话“Regardless of how likely social media giants, are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.( 然而,无论社交媒体巨头有多大可能改变他们的方式,个人都可以控制自己的行为。)” 故选A。
    D
To nap or not to nap? Whether napping will work for you depends on a range of factors such as lifestyle, sleep cycle length, culture, and, most importantly, the length of your snooze. If you like to nap, you are not alone. Napping is part of the culture in many countries: around 51 percent of people worldwide habitually enjoy 40 winks in the daytime.
When it comes to napping. one size definitely doesn’t fit all. If you are sleep deprived, a nap can be helpful or even essential for making it through the day. However, for those with other sleep issues, a nap may make it harder to fall asleep at night. For most of us, the timing and length of our nap will largely determine how beneficial it is to our sleep routine.
Between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., most people experience an increase in sleepiness, triggered by a slight drop in core body temperature. A nap of 30 minutes or less around this time allows you to benefit from a burst of Stage I and 2 sleep, which is good for mental and physical alertness.
Napping for 30 minutes or less can reduce stress and lower the risk of cardiovascular problems like heart attacks and strokes. One study showed that napping three times a week for 30 minutes led to a 37 percent decreased risk of dying from heart disease.
A brief nap can be beneficial for those with excessive daytime sleepiness, including people suffering from sleep apnea(呼吸暂停) or narcolepsy, shift workers, and people with jet lag. Studies show that short naps can help improve or reset a disrupted circadian rhythm
Naps can interfere with insomnia(失眠) treatment, which involves restricting daytime sleep to increase the likelihood of sleeping solidly at night.
Be cautious about naps of more than 30 minutes. Waking from the deep-sleep stages results in sleep inertia, a super-dizzy state where brainwaves are slow and it takes longer to adjust to the awake state.
A recent study has found that napping for more than 60 minutes a day increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 50 percent.
    12. Whether a nap is needed is determined mainly by .
    A. your living habit B. your sleep-wake circle
    C. the society you’re in D. period of time in sleeping
    13. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. A nap benefits all the people.
    B. Not all the people fit napping.
    C. A nap works on one with sleep problems.
    D. A nap works for you if you’re lacking sleep.
    14. Which of the following statements is true?
    A. Improper length of napping leads to sleep disorder.
    B. A 30-minute napping results in longer time to keep awake.
    C. Napping 60 minutes a day tends to trigger certain disease.
    D. Napping less than 30 minutes ensures you refreshed after wake.
    15. What is a suitable title for the text?
    A. Napping: Harmful or Helpful? B. A Boost for Sleeping
    C. The Timing of a Nap D. A New Trend of Napping
D 13. B 14. A 15. A

When I was a kid about twelve years old, I had a lot of freckles(雀斑). I had reached the age when I had begun to really look at myself in the mirror, and I was overwhelmed. Apparently my mother was too, because sometimes she’d look at me and shake her head.
I had a cousin whose name was Janette Elizabeth. She looked exactly like her name sounds because she had a flawless peaches-and-cream complexion (肤色). I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be a lot different if I had beautiful skin too.
And then, in the back pages of Janette Elizabeth’s magazine, I found the answer: an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did. The ad assured me that the product would work well. For three weeks I went to the mailbox every day precisely at the time the mail was delivered. I knew that if someone else in my family got the mail, I would never hear the end of it. There was no way that they would let me open the box in private.
Three weeks later, my package finally came. I went to my room with it, sat on the edge of my bed, and opened it. I was sure that I was looking at a miracle. When I got up the next morning, I applied the cream all over my body. Then I took my hoe (锄头) and went with my brother and cousins to hoe the field, where I got rid of some tiger lilies (虎百合), seemingly ugly with black and small spots.
The sun was so strong that even my face started to bum. By the end of the day, when I came back to the house, my family, knowing nothing about the freckle-remover cream, began to say things like “I’ve never seen you with that many freckles before.” When I saw myself in the mirror, I found my freckles even darker and clearer. I dissolved into tears and hid in the bathroom.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My mother called me to the dinner table, but I ignored her.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After what seemed a century, I heard a gentle knock on my bedroom’s door.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My mother called me to the dinner table, but I ignored her. When she came to the bathroom door and demanded that I come out and have a meal, I burst out of the door, tears streaming down my cheeks. Before she stopped me, I stormed into my room and slammed the door shut behind me. Looking into the mirror, I saw a girl with more and darker freckles on the face instead of peaches-and-cream complexion. Only then did I realize that the cream had a reverse effect when wearing it in the sun. I threw myself down on the bed and sobbed.
After what seemed a century, I heard a gentle knock on my bedroom’s door. Hesitating for a moment, with puffy eyes and still wet cheeks, I shuffled across the room to open the door. At the door stood my mother and Janette with a big bunch of tiger lilies, which were covered with black spots but amazingly beautiful. I stared at them in stunned surprise, not knowing what to say. My mother held me in her warm embrace. “There are all kinds of flowers, and they are all beautiful and sweet,” said she. Hearing this, and smelling the fragrance of the tiger lilies, the freckles on my face seemed to have magically faded.
