Thanks to the progress of artificial intelligence (AI), robots have won against human players in a number of games, such as chess, Go and even mahjong. And now, AI-powered robots are showing their talent in professional curling(冰壶).
Recently, a robot team named Curly has drawn much attention as it successfully beat two South Korean national curling teams. Researchers from Korea University in South Korea, and Technical University of Berlin in Germany developed the robot.
Curling is a challenging sport that requires a mix of precision(精确度) and strategy. In the game, a player called the "thrower" gently slides the stone and releases it before a boundary(界线) called the "hogline". The stone slides down to the target, known as the "house". An opposing team does the same, so both teams accumulate stones in the same house. At the end of the round, the team with a stone closest to the center of the target gets a point.
This requires the players to figure out the force and angle needed to slide a heavy stone in order to land it in the house or make it into another position. Players also have to form a strategy to prevent the opponent from getting their stones closest to the center of the house. And apparently, Curly has made progress in mastering these skills.
Curly is a team of two robots: One is responsible for observing the position of the stones at the scoring end, while the other does the throwing. But how was this robot programmed to achieve this?
Researchers built a simulation(模拟) of a curling game for the robots to play around. In the simulation, the researchers approximated the physics of the real world as best as they could, considering various conditions, such as the ice surface and the positions of stones. Then, there is curling strategy. The robots were trained in different situations to deal with various throws. The researchers found that Curly adapted to many variables(变量) of the game the same way a person would.
This shows that a robot can observe the real world and act accordingly in a precise and strategic manner, which is a sign of a promising future for the ever-expanding use of AI.
    24. What do we know about the team of robots named Curly?
A.It can play different kinds of sports.
B.It defeated human players in sports games.
C.It is more advanced in sports than other robots.
D.It was developed by researchers from South Korea.
25.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The way to play curling. B.The use of AI in sports competitions.
C.The ways Curly can be improved. D.The reasons why Curly was invented.
    26. What did researchers find out about Curly when it was being trained?
A.It could consider different conditions. B.It could develop new game strategies.
C.It could build a simulation of a game. D.It could copy what human players did.
    27. What attitude does the author have toward AI technologies?
    A.Worried. B.Unconcerned. C.Annoyed. D.Hopeful.

A meteorite (陨石) flew fast across the sky and exploded over central Russia on Friday, raining fireballs over a vast area and causing a shock wave that smashed windows, damaged buildings and injured l,200 people.
People heading to work in Chelyabinsk heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt the shock wave.
According to Russian space agency Roscosmos, the fireball, travelling at a speed of 30km per second, had burnt very brightly across the horizon, leaving a long white trail that could be seen as far as 200km away. Car alarms went off, thousands of windows shattered and mobile phone networks were disrupted.
“I was driving to work, it was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as if it were day,” said Viktor Prokofiev, 36, a resident of Yekaterinburg in the Urals Mountains. “I felt like I was blinded by headlights.”
The meteorite, which weighed about 20 tons and may have been made of iron, entered Earth’s atmosphere and broke apart 30-50km above ground, according to Russia’s Academy of Sciences.
The energy released when it entered the Earth’s atmosphere was about several thousand tons, the academy said, the power of a small atomic weapon exploding.
No deaths were reported, but the Emergencies Ministry said 20,000 rescue and clean-up workers were sent to the region after President Vladimir Putin told Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov to ease the disruption and help the victims.
The Interior Ministry said about l,200 people had been injured, at least 200 of them children, and most from broken pieces of glass. “While events this big are rare, an impact that could cause damage and death could happen every century or so. Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop impacts.”

You dash through a crowded railway station, tripping over bags, spilling(泼出) your coffee, only to have the doors slide shut in your face, leaving you breathless on the platform as the train pulls away.
But at least, if you’re in France, someone may be playing the piano for you. But it won’t be performed by a paid musician, or even a street entertainer playing for coins. It will just be a random passer-by, jamming for the fun of it on one of the pianos that the national railroad company, S.N.C.F., has fixed in nearly 100 stations across France. They are free for anyone to play, and travelers from all walks of life have taken to doing just that.
Gares & Connexions, the S.N.C.F. division that manages its stations, rents the instruments from the producer, Yamaha: which maintains them and tunes them every month or two. The first one was set up in the Gare Montparnasse in Paris in 2012.
The music, mixed with the sounds of shouting passengers, screaming trains and rolling suitcases, gives French stations a special soundscape. The amateur musicians have included Irish soccer fans and even babies. In 2014, Gares & Connexions and Yamaha organized a nationwide contest called Your Turn to Play, asking participants to submit videos of themselves using one of the pianos. It drew nearly 900 entries.
Isn’t the railroad company taking a big chance? Apparently not: “None of the instruments has been vandalized to this day, or even merely damaged,” said Claire Foumon, a spokeswoman for Gares & Connexions. “They are shared and respected by all.”
So if you miss a train in Paris; Bordeaux or Marseille one day, perhaps someone will be playing a favorite piece that will ease your pain. Or perhaps you’ll sit down and play your annoyance away yourself.
    32. Why did Gares & Connexions fix pianos in railway stations?
A.To advertise Yamaha’s products. B.To make stations more attractive.
C.To let travelers have a relaxing trip. D.To help street artists make a living.
    33. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.The contest has proved a hit.
    B.The pianos are very popular.
    C.Railway stations are crowded.
D.Everyone can be an amateur musician.
    34. What does the underlined word “vandalized” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A.Selected carefully. B.Checked regularly.
C.Reserved in advance. D.Destroyed on purpose.
    35. What would be the best title for the text?
A.Miss a train yet catch a tune B.A soundscape in the memory
C.The role of piano in French life D.An amazing train with a piano bar

In ancient China, a prince was about to be crowned emperor. However, according to the law, he first had to get married. Since this meant choosing the future queen, the prince needed to find a young woman whom he could trust absolutely.
On the advice of a wise man, he decided to call on all the young girls of the region so as to find the most worthy candidate(候选人). An old lady, who had served in the palace for many years, heard about the preparations for this gathering and she was very upset, for her daughter developed a secret love for the prince. When the old lady got home, she told her daughter and was horrified to learn that she intended to go to the palace.
The old lady knew that her daughter would not stand a chance. All the richest and most beautiful girls from the region would be present. She did not want her daughter's suffering to turn into madness. However, her daughter turned a deaf ear to her advice. She knew it was her only chance to spend at least a few moments close to the prince, and that would be enough for her. That night, when the young woman reached the palace, all the most beautiful girls were indeed there, wearing the most beautiful clothes and the most beautiful jewels(首饰). Surrounded by the members of his court, the prince announced the challenge.
He gave each girl a seed and said that the young woman who brought him the loveliest flower would be the future queen. The girl took her seed and planted it in a pot. She took care of it with great patience and tenderness. Three months passed and no shoots appeared. She tried everything she could. She asked the farmers and peasants, who showed her the most varied methods of farming, but without result.

When the days are good, we get hired a lot to play at weddings, outdoor concerts and festivals. Then, once the cooler temperatures set in, we don't get that many jobs at all. Sometimes I can barely make ends meet.
    Text 8
W: I need to talk to you about the situation in the office, Simon.
M: Oh, I know I should have kept my desk clean. Sorry, I ...
W: That's not what I want to say. I mean the noise! We’re supposed to do our preparation for the courses and grade the students’ assignments in the office, but Professor Brian constantly has students coming in to help with his research reports. I can’t get focused on my work!
M : What do you think of that small room downstairs? We could change it into a meeting room for Professor Brian to use.
W: You mean the room used for storing supplies now? I thought the school said it would be changed into a little library.
    M: Well, I don’t know. Let’s go and ask.
    Text 9
W: My guest today is Tim Jones, who organizes an international summer course for young musicians. Tim, tell us all about it.
M : Well, I'm lucky to have such a great job. Basically, young musicians come from all over the world and learn to play together to have a concert lour. By the end of the eight-week course, they’re really good, and hearing them play is what gives me most pleasure. Unfortunately, I don't get to know them all that well, as organizing every single small thing of the course keeps me busy.
W : So, how do you find the young music ians?
M : We advertise online. Anyone between the ages of 16 and 20 can complete the application form and e-mail it to us. We're not looking for the perfect performance or the good-looking stars of tomorrow. But the course is in English, so a basic level of spoken language is necessary.
W : Where is the course held?
M: Mostly in a university during the summer holidays. They have halls for practicing, and plenty of bedrooms and dining rooms, which is a low cost for us. And of course, convenient transport is a must, so somewhere in the quiet countryside is no good, even though it is more spacious there.

The girl appeared in the palace with her plant less pot. Inside, she knew that this would be her last meeting with her truelove. Full of sadness, she saw all the other candidates had achieved wonderful results: Each girl bore a flower lovelier than the past, in the most varied forms and colours. Finally, the longed-for moment came. The prince studied each of the candidates' pot with great care and attention. Having inspected them all, he announced that the servant's daughter would be his new wife.
The result that the poor girl was chosen was a surprise to everyone present. All the other girls protested, saying that he had chosen the only one of them who had failed to grow anything at all. In response, the prince calmly explained the reasoning behind the challenge. This young woman was the only one who cultivated the flower that made her worthy of becoming the queen: the flower of honesty. As all the seeds the prince had handed out were not able to grow and nothing could ever have grown from them.
