Some individuals are born with a gift for public speaking. 16 Do you want to be a good public speaker? Here are some principles you must master.
People want to listen to someone who is interesting, relaxed and comfortable. Too often when you stand up to give a speech, you focus on the “public”at the expense of the”speaking. “ 17 Focus on the speaking. Talk directly to your audience, be yourself and make a connection.
Even the most successful public speaker will make mistakes. Yet, the only one who cares about any mistake is the one who is speaking. People’s attention wanders constantly. In fact, most people only absorb about 20 percent of a speaker’s message. So, don’t stop speaking when you make a mistake unless it’s a truly serious one. 18
Your goal is not to be a perfect public speaker. 19 And like everything else in life, that takes practice. Remember, even world champion athletes practice their skills on a consistent basis.
20 It’s rare to hear someone say, “I wish that speaker had spoken longer. “On the other hand, you probably can’t count the times that you’ve thought, “I’m glad that talk is over. It seemed to go on forever! “So surprise your audience. Always make your presentation just a bit shorter than anticipated. It’s better to leave your listeners wishing for more than shifting restlessly in their seats waiting for your speech finally to end.
A. Do the opposite.
B. You want to be an effective public speaker.
C. You don’ t need to apologize for a minor slip.
D. When it comes to public speaking, less is usually more.
E. The objective of most speeches is to benefit the audience
F. Take the fear out of public speaking by focusing on your listeners
G. However, the majority of people are effective speakers because they train to be.
G 17. A 18. C 19. B 20. D
17.下句Focus on the speaking. 这是错误的做法,A项Do the opposite. 故选A。
B. You want to be an effective public speaker.
Always make your presentation just a bit shorter than anticipated.

Why do people take “selfies(自拍)”
Researchers at Syracuse University in New York tried to answer that question. 1. People who post selfies and use editing software to make themselves look better show behavior connected to admiring themselves too much, the Syracuse researchers said. 2. As social media can be shallow, it is a good place for people to “work towards satisfying their own overmuch pride.”
3. People who post group selfies show a need for popularity and a need to belong to a group, the Syracuse University research found.
Other findings from the study include: There are no major differences on how often men and women post selfies and how often they use editing software. 4.
The Newhouse School’s Associate Professor Makana Chock worked on the study. She said, posting selfies on social media is not all that different from what people have done for many years. On trips, our parents and grandparents used cameras to take photos. Before social media, people would bring back photos to show friends and family. You had no choice but to look at them. If you are a nice person, you commented about how nice everyone in the photos looked, especially children and the person showing the photos. 5.
On social media, it is a different experience. People can decide not to look at photos of their friends and family even if they click “like” or even “love” under the Facebook selfie.
A. That was the old way of “clicking” like.
B. They came up with some surprising answers.
C. Different people have different opinions about it.
D. Such people think very highly of themselves, especially how they look.
E.Both cameras and phones are useful tools to record people’s experiences.
F.There are other reasons, besides admiring themselves, why people post selfies.
G.But men desire to be seen as popular more than women when posting selfies.

Developing Interpersonal Relationships
One of the biggest keys to happiness is having strong interpersonal relationships. I believe that relationships are key to leading a fulfilling and contented life. Like anything worth having in life, they take some work to develop and maintain.
In the spirit of clarity, it’s good idea to take a quick look at the definition of interpersonal relationships. 16. This can extend from family to friends, to work associates, to neighbors, or clubs and on and on. It can be a relationship in any context or situation.
For instance, I’ve had strong short-lived relationships with people I’ve worked with on a project as well as one for 50 years with my brother. My two best friends and I live in different cities but, we get together several times a year and have a great time. I have a mentor I worked with over a decade ago I still stay in touch with because we get along so well. 17.
We will briefly touch on developing interpersonal relationships. Best way to approach it is to be a good partner or friend as the situation desires. 18. Do your part and help others as needed. Be a contributor who is also willing to help out when needed. As a friend, you simply follow the age-old piece of advice “to have a friend, you must first be a friend”.
19. That want-to-help attitude will put you with like-minded individuals who you’ll probably hit it off with. The main thing to remember is great interpersonal relationships can get formed any lace or situation where you interact with other people. 20.

21.
When you have many things to do and a lot of demands on your time, you can lose sight of what’s important. One of the best ways to see the big picture – what you want out of life – is to lay out your goals.

Problems, problems, problems – recognize your limits. It’s too stressful to try to deal with all your problems at once. 23.
Goal-Setting Tips

After you’ve set your goals, identify the skills you have to achieve those goals. 24. , do some research. Try the library, your guidance adviser and teachers, and other people who could help you.
25. . If your goal is something you no longer want, change it. Identify the barriers to getting your goals. Consider ways to overcome them. Don’t get depressed by a big, long-term goal – see what steps you can take to achieve it and set those steps down as short-term, “do-able” goals.

21. 由“When you have many things to do and a lot of demands on your time, you can lose sight of what’s important. One of the best ways to see the big picture – what you want out of life – is to lay out your goals.”
22. 由“ Discuss your concerns with a friend, parent or teacher”可知,与朋友、父母或老师讨论你的忧虑。
23. 由“it’s too stressful to try to deal with all your problems at once”可知,一次性处理所有的问题压力太大了。
24. 由“After you’ve set your goals, identify the skills you have to achieve those goals.
25. 由“If your goal is something you no longer want, change it”可知,如果你的目标不再是你想要的,改变它。

Therapeutic (治疗性的) writing involves participating in writing activities to deal with emotional issues. People work under the direction of a therapist (治疗学家) for most of the time. 26. In both cases, participants adopt expressive writing to put down thoughts, emotions, and other experiences.
Therapeutic writing can be useful in cases where people have difficulty communicating by other means. A client who is having trouble with a situation, for example, might write a letter to the people involved as part of therapy. 27. Besides, it works on how to approach the people in real life to settle the issue.
Exercises in therapeutic writing typically encourage people to write for a block of time, such as 15 minutes. They may be asked to write about their days or issues coming up in their lives. In guided therapy, the therapist may review the writing and discuss it with the patient. 28.
Some people keep writing regular journals to share with their therapists and others. 29. Therapists can also use electronic journals to help patients between sessions, looking at what they’re writing about and identifying specific issues to discuss in therapy.
30. People may keep personal journals or diaries intended for their private use, where they can describe events and explore emotions. Some add a self-directed group therapy aspect as well by sharing their writing with friends who can provide advice.
A. Some of us think that writing is only for writers.
B. There are informal approaches to writing as therapy.
C. Participants can benefit from therapeutic writing exercises.
D. Sometimes they can start a writing program independently.
E.Of course, patients can talk about the emotions that come up while writing.

A client who is having trouble with a situation, for example, might write a letter to the people involved as part of therapy可知,例如,一个有问题的客户,可以写一封信给当事人,作为治疗的一部分;再根据下文Besides, it works on how to approach the people in real life to settle the issue. F. This writing can help him or her express goals and a desired result clearly.
In guided therapy, the therapist may review the writing and discuss it with the patient. E. Of course, patients can talk about the emotions that come up while writing.
29. 上文Some people keep writing regular journals to share with their therapists and others. G. Others may keep an online writing journal and only allow his or her therapist to read.
People may keep personal journals or diaries intended for their private use可知,人们可能会保留个人日志或为私人使用的日记;再根据Some add a self-directed group therapy aspect as well by sharing their writing with friends who can provide advice. B. There are informal approaches to writing as therapy.

Leonardo da Vinci and Nature
In the modern world, art and science are two very separate activities, but in Leonardo’s time they were closely connected. Science meant mathematics and medical studies.31. Mathematics included practical work like surveying land for making maps as well as measuring the movements of the stars in the sky. An artist might need to measure the different parts of the body. He could also use mathematics to place things in relationship to each other in a drawing or painting so the scene looked correct.32.
Mathematics was also connected to music because musical sounds have a fixed relationship with each other that can be described in numbers.33. More than this, though, Leonardo believed that numbers were a part of all things in the world, including music, and he said that “without them nothing can be done.”
“Nature has kindly given us things everywhere to copy,” wrote Leonardo. In all his activities, Leonardo was trying to discover the rules that control nature. In his search for those rules, he looked very carefully at a lot of examples and details. Actual experience was more important to him than opinion, and he worked from facts to ideas.34. His purpose was to examine the world so he could copy it in beautiful paintings and sculptures. He also wanted to learn from the clever solutions of nature.
35. His quick little sketches, often done while wandering outside, helped him to catch a movement or a shape. More careful drawings would be done at a desk with a pen and ruler. In July 2001, a small drawing by Leonardo was sold for $12 million. It was the most expensive drawing in the world.
A. Leonardo was always drawing.
B. How could these be connected with art?
C. Leonardo was also an influential philosopher.
D. Mathematicians and doctors worked to discover the unknown.
E.Above all, Leonardo wanted to understand how and why things worked.
F.Leonardo himself was a very good musician and liked to play an instrument and sing.
G.You will see a good example of such positioning in the painting of The Last Supper.
B 32. G 33. F 34. E 35. A
科学意味着数学和医学研究, but in Leonardo’s time they were closely connected. Science meant mathematics and medical studies. How could these be connected with art?
32. He could also use mathematics to place things in relationship to each other in a drawing or painting so the scene looked correct.从空格前面这句里面的place things in relationship to each other in a drawing or painting. 这里读出两点信息:一是in a drawing or painting. You will see a good example of such positioning in the painting of The Last Supper.
Leonardo himself was a very good musician and liked to play an instrument and sing.
Above all, Leonardo wanted to understand how and why things worked.
故选A。
