As the summer vacation approaches, Wu Ruixing, 21, a junior from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), is in the middle of preparing for the upcoming exams and also thinking about his VEX robotics team’s future.
Founded in 2018, the SJTU VEX team has an enviable record in VEX Robotics Competitions at all levels, during which students in more than 20,000 teams from 50 countries compete against other teams. For the 2022-2023 competition season, the student participants from SJTU won several awards, including the EXU Robot Skills Challenge World Champion and the Design Division Champion.
“For most of us, it was our first time taking part in the World Championship. Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation that Starts in Your Yard, written by Doug Tallamy, 2020. This book is intended for the private landowner—not one whose primary landscaping concern is how green their lawn is —but one who could also be convinced to be concerned about the alarming decline of birds, insects, and other wildlife.
The beginning of the book focuses on the “why”— explaining how declining habitat affects insect populations, which affects other plant and animal populations, which affects human health. This book is not just focused on bringing our awareness to the problem at hand, it’s more importantly a call to arms.
In his book, the typical homeowner may believe their yard is too small, isolated, and ordinary to make a difference. However, he points out that private yards and neighborhoods, suburbs, and even cities can play a significant role, especially when they play together. A small pollinator (传粉昆虫) garden in the middle of a suburb may not save significant populations of insects, but a small garden next to your neighbor’s garden, next to their neighbor’s garden, begins to form a network. Together, we could create enough conservation land to make an enormous impact.
In the second part of the book Tallamy looks into the “how,” explaining why focusing on the removal of invasive plants and the establishment of native plants on private landscapes is the best way to fight the decline of habitat. He further argues that by growing “keystone” plants, we can support a large number of insect species. The large number of insect species then supports a diversity of other wildlife. We will not only help stop the decline of wildlife, but we will begin to turn the tide.
Gardeners at all experience levels will gain inspiration from this book, but it is not a step-by-step guide to designing a wildlife garden. Beyond a few examples, it doesn’t tell you which plant species you should use. Those choices depend on your region and site conditions. Tallamy offers resources: places to go to find that information, and guidelines on where to start.
8. What is the book aimed at?
A. Wiping out troublesome insects. B. Bonding isolated community residents.
C. Teaching special gardening skills. D. Helping make yards friendly to wildlife.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The problems of garden networks. B. The challenges of garden building.
C. The causes of city wildlife decline. D. The inner logic of yard conservation.
10. What does the underlined phrase “turn the tide” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Increase wildlife populations. B. Support diverse wildlife.
C. Change the direction of the tide. D. Remove the invasive plants.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward the book?
A. Unclear. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.
D 9. D 10. A 11. B

根据第一段中“Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation that Starts in Your Yard,”(《大自然最大的希望》:一种从你的院子开始的保护新方法,)“This book is intended for the private landowner—not one whose primary landscaping concern is how green their lawn is —but one who could also be convinced to be concerned about the alarming decline of birds, insects, and other wildlife.”(这本书是写给私人土地拥有者的——他们主要关心的不是他们的草坪有多绿——而是那些可能会被说服去关注鸟类、昆虫和其他野生动物数量惊人下降的人。)
根据第三段“In his book, the typical homeowner may believe their yard is too small, isolated, and ordinary to make a difference. Together, we could create enough conservation land to make an enormous impact.”(在他的书中,典型的房主可能认为他们的院子太小、太孤立、太普通,无法发挥作用。
根据第四段中“He further argues that by growing “keystone” plants, we can support a large number of insect species. The large number of insect species then supports a diversity of other wildlife. We will not only help stop the decline of wildlife”(他进一步认为,通过种植“基石”植物,我们可以支持大量昆虫物种。
根据最后一段“Gardeners at all experience levels will gain inspiration from this book, but it is not a step-by-step guide to designing a wildlife garden. Beyond a few examples, it doesn’t tell you which plant species you should use. Those choices depend on your region and site conditions. ”(所有经验水平的园丁都将从这本书中获得灵感,但它不是设计野生植物园的一步一步的指南。除了几个例子之外,它并没有告诉你应该使用哪种植物。这些选择取决于您所在的地区和现场条件。)可知,作者认为这本书会给人一些灵感,但它并不是讲述如何使你的庭院成为野生植物园的指南。可推知,作者对此书仅仅是客观的讲述,故选B。

When Eugenie George, a financial writer and educator from Philadelphia, first heard that her friend passed a financial counseling exam, her heart sank. She’d failed the same test weeks earlier. But then, instead of sadness, she called her friend, “I congratulated her and told her she inspired me.” George knew that being frank would remove her envy, but she was surprised when it shifted her attitude so she could share her friend’s happiness and experience her own, in turn.
Finding pleasure in another person’s good fortune is what social scientists call freudenfreude, which describes the delight we feel when someone else succeeds, even if it doesn’t directly involve us. Freudenfreude is like social glue, says Catherine Chambliss, a professor of psychology at Ursinus College. It makes relationships “more close and enjoyable.”
While the benefits of freudenfreude are plentiful, it doesn’t always come easily. In zero-sum situations, your loss might really sting (刺痛), making freudenfreude feel out of reach. If you were raised in a family that paired winning with self-worth, Chambliss says, you might misread someone else’s victory as your own shortcoming.
To help people strengthen joy-sharing, Chambliss and her colleagues developed a program called Freudenfreude Enhancement Training, featuring two exercises.
Show active interest in someone else’s happiness. To start, invite the bearer of good news to discuss the experience. Even if your heart isn’t in it, happiness can thrive when you make a heartfelt effort to engage with a positive activity. So when you speak with your friend, make eye contact and listen attentively. This should motivate you to keep going and make you feel as if your efforts will pay off with freudenfreude.
View individual success as a joint effort. “When we feel happy for others, their joy becomes our joy,” says psychologist Marisa Franco, author of the book Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Makeand KeepFriends. To that end, freudenfreude encourages us to look at success as a community achievement. “No one gets to the top alone, and when we elevate others, we’re often carried up with them,” she says.
12. Why does the author mention the example of Eugenie George in paragraph1?
A. To explain a role. B. To introduce a concept.
C. To provide a background. D. To make a prediction.
13. Which of the following best describes the state of “freudenfreude”?
A. Li Ping feels sorry for his friend’s not having passed a test.
B. Li Hua feels happy that his father has given him a birthday present.
C. Lin Tao feels delighted for his deskmate’s having won the first award.
D. Liu Bin secretly feels glad that his classmate Li Li has lost her beloved bike.
14. What do the last 2 paragraphs focus on?
A. The ways to achieve freudenfreude.
B. The reasons to experience freudenfreude.
C. The aims of carrying out two exercises.
D. The influences of performing two exercises.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Knowing others’ victories results in your envy.
B. Learning to share with others enhances your delight.
C. Celebrating others’ victories brings yourself benefits.
D. Witnessing others’ misfortune makes yourself unhappy.
B 13. C 14. A 15. C

根据上文“Tell a charming story. This can be a personal anecdote about why you are passionate about the topic, or an anecdote about another person who the audience can learn from. Make sure that the story comes from your heart rather than your head.
根据前文“When rhetorical questions are crafted and delivered well, they can persuade an audience to side with your position. ”(当反问句精心设计并表达得当时,它们可以说服听众站在你的立场上。)提到了通过反问可以使听众与你感同身受,因此空处应承接前文,描述反问带来的好处。选项E.“它们可以让你的听众相信你和他们有共同的信念。”选项中“they”指代前文的“rhetorical questions ”,肯定了前文的观点,符合题意,故选E。

David had been staring at the skateboard (滑板) for weeks, every day on his way home from school, admiring it through the window of the skate shop on Market Street. It was a long board—a serious skateboard, not meant for tricks or speed but for long rides down hills, on busy roads, or all the way across town. It was a skateboard that could change David’s life. No longer would his parents have to pick him up after school. The long board would be able to take him home.
One day, he told his dad his idea.
“Dad,” David said. “It’s the world’s finest skateboard. It could change my life forever.” “That’s great,” said Dad. “I like you having hobbies. But that’s an expensive little toy, and…”
“It’s not a toy!” David cried out. But he collected himself. “It’s a whole new way of life. When you were my age, what was the thing you wanted most? The thing you dreamed about?”
“A Vincent Black Shadow — the world’s finest motorbike.”
“So yeah, this skateboard I’d like to buy is like the Vincent Black Shadow. So you see why I have to have it.”
“You know what my dad told me when I asked for a Black Shadow?”
“What?”
“Nothing. I didn’t ask him, because I knew he’d think the money was too much for him. So I went out to do odd jobs (打零工) in my vacation, earning money for saving.”
“Man,” David said, a bit disappointed. “I was afraid you’d say something like that.”
“You can do it, can’t you?” Dad said seriously.
Although David never worked before, now he decided to get a job to save money for the skateboard.
He walked up and down Market Street looking for someplace to work. The pizzeria wasn’t hiring. The coffee shop said he was too young. The only store with a “HELP WANTED” sign was Simon’s Candy Store. David had heard kids talk about buying something in the candy store. It was said that the boss, Mr. Simon, was very kind.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 2:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Picking up his courage, he pushed open the door, and went in. The sweet smell of candies and chocolates filled the air, instantly making David feel more at ease. He approached the counter where Mr. Simon stood with a warm smile. “How may I help you?” Mr. Simon greeted as soon as he saw the boy. “Er...., sir, I’d like to.....” Scratching his head, David was still nervous, but he had to give it a try for the skateboard. He told Mr. Simon, he’d come for the job. Mr. Simon asked him jokingly if he wanted to save up for something, “Oh, yes”, with a red face, David nodded, “You’ve read my mind, I want a skateboard with my own efforts.”
“I’ve helped several kids achieve their dreams,” smiled Mr. Simon. David felt a little relaxed, Mr. Simon told him what he should do and how he would be paid. In the following weeks, he quickly adapted to his new role, from restocking shelves to assisting customers with their sweet carvings. With each paycheck, David diligently saved. And finally, the day arrived when he had saved enough money to purchase the long board. As David rode his longboard down the street for the first time, he reflected on the journey that had led him here. He knew that it was not just a skateboard but a symbol of perseverance and the belief that dreams were achievable.
