例如表示心情的表达:dance/jump for joy, brighten sth. up, be wild with joy等;表示“看”这一动作的表达:wink at sb., glance at sth., squint sb.'s eyes等。这些具体准确的语言会使续写部分更加生动形象。

It was the day of the big cross⁃country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross⁃country team. It just took him longer—that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
答案
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. “Why do you give up the run, David?” I whispered to him. “I will be a loser, and others will laugh at me,” he murmured, with his face flushing. I hugged him tightly, saying, “You are a determined boy, and I believe you can face the challenge bravely. But, more importantly, it is participation rather than the result that matters to you.” Having been inspired by what I said, David looked up and said firmly, “I will run.”
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. Hearing the gun blasting, they rushed out like arrows, except for David, who fell behind soon despite great efforts. “Come on, David!” I shouted crazily in the crowd. Sweaty and exhausted as he was, he kept running. Finally, when David struggled to cross the finishing line, the crowd erupted into wild cheers and thunderous applause. He embraced me with tears streaming down his face. I am, once again, proud of his strong determination.(151 words)

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up.
答案
As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Knowing what they were preparing for, he was greatly surprised. So immediately, he offered to get involved in the kids' job. Firstly, he put the pot of porridge over a gentle heat, asking Jeff to watch out for it going for fifteen minutes. And then he asked Jenna to break another two eggs and mix them with milk. Then, with all preparations done, they started to fry bread together. In a flash, a sweet smell filled the air in the kitchen.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. Eyes opened, the woman heard a harmonious “Happy Mother's Day” from her twin kids with a hot sweet breakfast before her. Behind the children stood their father, who told her the whole story. After learning about what happened, she rose quickly to check the boy's hand. Mother hugged them tightly, with tears rolling down her cheeks. “Thank you, my honey,” said the mother. “That's the best gift I've ever had.”(153 words)

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy—his name was Bernard—had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried,“I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

答案
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John's idea, she thought it was a good one, too. John quickly assigned tasks to Clara and Harry. They went to the local grocery and bought a popcorn machine and some paper bags while John prepared some ingredients like sugar, honey and oil. Soon, they made a large amount of popcorn and put it in paper bags. They rushed to Bernard's home and told him their idea. His face lit up when he heard the news, and his family was very grateful.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. “What if we can't sell it?” said Bernard anxiously. “No worries. We will give it a shot,” replied John in confidence. They took the popcorn around the house, and fortunately, people were willing to buy it. For a while, the popcorn was sold out. Bernard earned lots of money. Mrs. Meredith and her children then taught him how to make popcorn. Bernard did not forget the help from the Meredith family, and he passed the kindness to those in need. (153 words)

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us to his farm.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guest room of the farmhouse listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed by my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don't be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don't get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farmhouse were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark.
答案
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. I held the horse tightly and pulled him to the left to avoid the little rabbit. I managed to keep balance on the horse. All of a sudden the horse began to run. The speed was so fast that my father nearly failed to keep pace with us. For a few minutes my horse slowed down to a trot and then stopped beside a river. I looked around and realized that we were far away from the track.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. All we could hear was the sound of wandering water. Luckily the stars came out and gave us a little light when we were looking for the way back. After what must have been several hours, we found we actually went around in circles. We suddenly saw a dim light shooting from afar. My dad and I both rode our horses towards the light. As we got closer, we saw Uncle Paul with a big searchlight waving to us. It was indeed a vacation that I had never experienced before. (167 words)

“It's not that high,” my courageous brother said. As soon as I stood near the base of the climb, my instructor attached his harness(保护带). He assisted me with mine and reassured me that I was perfectly secure in the harness. My mind recalled when we had to sign papers explaining that it was our fault if we died, and now part of me didn't trust him. As I stared at the cliff side, it seemed to weave like a loom(织布机), and it made a maze(迷宫). I walked to the base feeling like I were on a death march, my stomach turning like a circus performer.
Immediately, my fingertips absorbed the feeling of the rough rocks as I started to climb. My mind was sending all kinds of emergency signals telling me to turn back. However, it was too late; the people behind me had also started, and they wouldn't let me go down. As I went higher to the top, I forced my arms to pull and legs to push. Soon, my body shook in fear each inch I went up. I looked down and saw that I had gained a great amount of distance, and my entire body stuck to the wall like a kindergartener to his mother on the first day of school.
“Keep going!” my brother said with encouragement. I noticed that I was holding up a train of people that were expecting me to go up the stone wall. Next, I forced myself to go up the seemingly boundless wall as I pushed back tears of fear. Suddenly, my feet slipped, unable to find a right hold. I forced myself to pull, but my arms lacked strength.

答案
“PULL, PULL!” I screamed at my arms as they slowly raised my body. Before long, my feet found a good hold, and I was safe. My brother gave me comfort as I kept edging up the cliff side. Unfortunately, my arms felt weak, and curiosity defeated me when I looked down and felt a mix of accomplishment and terror. I trembled with fear. However, with the detailed instruction of my instructor, I had gained so much ground. My mind felt powerful and confident again.
I whispered to myself about how I was going to finish this dangerous climb. My hand reached up, and I planted my foot, managing to find a right hold. I told myself to do this again. Again. Again. I reached up again, and there was nothing there but a flat surface. Surprisingly, I reached it with my other hand and pulled myself up to it. At last, I seemingly rolled over the top. Despite the fear of the climb, I learned that I should take risks, because it would teach me how to succeed and be more confident in what I do.(161 words)

Diane Ray was completely self⁃centred and very spoilt(宠坏的). Her parents gave her everything that she wanted, knowing that she would throw a tantrum(发脾气) if they did not satisfy her desire. She would scream and lie on the floor drumming her heels. Finally her parents always gave in.
That was why she was alone on the beach, wearing an expensive swimsuit. In order to get her parents to buy it for her, she threw a big tantrum. They were back at the beach house, recovering from the tantrum she had thrown when they told her that it was too dangerous to go swimming alone. “Dangerous?” she said. “You just don't want me to have fun. I'm going and if you try to stop me, I'll scream.”
“What are you doing?” a voice asked. Diane jumped and looked around. She did not know that the man was here until he spoke.
“I'm going to swim,” she answered coldly.
“You shouldn't swim today,” the man advised. “There is a storm coming up.”
“You should mind your own business!” Diane replied and walked into the gentle waves.
“If you go out there you'll be sorry,” the man called after her. But she did not want to reply.
Diane slipped into the water and swam happily until white waves began rolling in and it became harder to swim against the current. Sea water hit her face, making it difficult to breathe. “Oh, why didn't I listen to the advice?” Diane asked herself inwardly.

Frightened, she began to cry.

答案
Frightened, she began to cry. And she felt she would slip beneath the surface and be drowned. Then, she heard a calm voice, “Hold on! I'm coming.” With relief, she saw the man rowing a boat towards her. “I hope you've learned a lesson. You put us both in danger,” he shouted angrily as he dragged her into the boat. Gratefully, Diane thanked him and ran towards the beach house.
After Diane closed her bedroom's door, she was lost in thought. The pictures of her throwing a tantrum appeared in her mind. Feeling ashamed, she went out and walked towards her parents. She made an apology to her parents for her bad behavior. She said, “I am sorry. You have cared about me a lot, giving selfless love to me. But I failed to cherish it, and even worse hurt you deeply. I promise I will listen to your words from now on.” With tears in their eyes, they hugged tightly.(145 words)

“If you could have any three things, what would you want?” Eleven⁃year⁃old Ruby Kate Chitsey loves asking that question, but it's not a game she plays at break. She asks it at nursing homes in the Harrison, Arkansas area, where she lives. Even more amazingly, she then sets out to make the residents' wishes come true.
Ruby Kate has long been close to older people. Her mother, Amanda Chitsey, is a nurse practitioner who works at nursing homes in northwest Arkansas, and Ruby Kate often goes along with her in the summer. “I've never found them scary at all, so I'm able to just go up to them and ask if they need anything,” she says.
Last May, Ruby Kate noticed a resident named Pearl looking out of a window. She seemed sad. “What are you looking at?” Ruby Kate asked. Pearl said she was watching her dog being led away by his new owner after a visit. Pearl didn't know when she would see her dog again.
Ruby Kate and Amanda asked around and discovered that the nursing home didn't allow residents to have dogs and Pearl couldn't afford to pay anyone to look after hers. Because Pearl was a Medicaid recipient (医疗补助接受者), she got only $40 a month to spend on personal items. They also learned that many nursing home residents were unable to afford even the smallest luxury. So Ruby Kate decided to do something about it.
She started by asking residents what three things they wanted most in the world. “That's a lot simpler than going, ‘Hey, what do you want?’” she explains. “They can understand you better.” Amanda worried that people would ask for cars and other things an 11⁃year⁃old girl wouldn't be able to provide. Instead, they asked for chocolate bars, McDonald's fries, and pants that fit properly.
“It broke me as a human,” Amanda says. “We left the nursing home that day and went straight to a store and bought as many items as we could.”
Using their own money, the Chitseys satisfied the wishes of about 100 people in three months. Then they started asking for donations.

The good people of Harrison responded so enthusiastically that Amanda set up a GoFundMe page, Three Wishes for Ruby's Residents, hoping to collect $5,000. As the funds began to accumulate from people from all walks of life, they reached their goal in a month. With those funds, she was able to do more to the elderly. One resident was a big fan of classical music, so she bought him a recorder. Another wanted to go to a friend's out⁃of⁃state wedding, so she gave him money for gas and food. Seeing the happiness and joy gleaming in their eyes, she decided to help more older people.
Earlier this year, Three Wishes for Ruby's Residents became non⁃profit and launched its first nationwide chapters. One of its new goals is to set up a new library in a nursing home in each state. Ruby Kate doesn't plan to stop there. She has a more ambitious goal that she intends to update their entertainment facilities nationwide. “I consider kindness to be my hobby,” she says, “and I'm very good at it.” Her story has inspired countless young people to spread the act of kindness to the old.(153 words)

It's been a crazy week of exams, grading, results and last⁃minute Christmas preparation. I've printed exam papers, supervised exams and marked the exam papers. Holiday fever is in the air and the kids know they just have a few days of school left. On Saturday we took all the kids to a Christmas party organised by a German voluntary group. There were kids from a whole bunch of different orphanages. They all danced and put on performances. We were also given lunch; we all received boxes of rice (rice cooked with a tomato and another vegetable mix) and a boiled egg.
One of the girls sitting next to me wasn't eating her food and she wouldn't tell me why. I asked if she wasn't hungry or if she was sick. It took ages but finally she told me that she was saving it. I told her not to worry about that: there would be dinner later on and she should just eat. She then told me that after the Christmas party last year there had been no more food and she had gone to bed with a sore stomach because she was so hungry. She didn't want the same thing to happen this year so she was saving her rice. I ended up giving her the other half of mine as I was full. She ate it and kept hers. She wouldn't believe me when I promised her there would be dinner that night. The whole exchange was really sad.
Food was plentiful at the orphanage at the moment, but that was only because a volunteer returned to live at the orphanage for a year and paid for all the food. She raised a large amount of money before she left and did the shopping each week, making sure there were plenty of vegetables, rice, fish and whatnot.

The volunteer was telling us what it was like just 2 years ago.
I guess at the Christmas party last year, they must have decided the kids had had one good meal, so they would save the food for another day.
答案
The volunteer was telling us what it was like just 2 years ago. Often there wasn't sufficient money for more than one proper meal a day. The orphanage director had to ask for money from different sources, including the government, charities and non⁃profits. The kids had long been starving by last Christmas, which caused most kids to suffer from malnutrition. “My heart sank when I first saw these pale and thin kids,” she said. “So, I decided to do something for them. I reached other non⁃profits and received some food.”
I guess at the Christmas party last year, they must have decided the kids had had one good meal, so they would save the food for another day. It makes me wonder what things will be like for the kids when the money and the volunteer are gone. Thus, I am determined to get enough money to help the kids. To ensure the long⁃run fund, I intend to set up a GoFundMe page, encouraging people from all walks of life to donate. With these funds, I believe the kids will have gotten rid of starvation by next Christmas. The little girl will never consider saving any food for another day.(159 words)

Taking Comfort from the Handball Connection
Recently, I was sitting at a red light on Wading River Road in Manorville, mentally organizing my errands(差事), when I suddenly found myself being pushed forward as my car sharply crashed into the vehicle in front of me.
Shocked that my car had just been rear⁃ended(追尾), I stepped onto the road and stared at the unbelievable damage to my car. The trunk of the car in front of me had opened, allowing a golf bag to fly out.
Fortunately, the drivers of all three vehicles were not injured.
After moving our vehicles off the road, we called the police and exchanged registration and insurance information.
Within the next week, the insurance company told me my car was totaled. I was now forced to buy a new car. Unhappy with the knowledge that my budget would have to include an unwanted car payment, I forced myself to accept the situation and entered the world of car shopping.
This was not a pleasant task. I loved my car, a white 2003 Toyota Avalon, because it had belonged to my husband, Rocky. I lost him five years ago owing to Alzheimer's disease, but driving his car made me feel as if he was riding with me. A friend went with me to a dealership in Riverhead. After viewing several cars, I chose one.
I sat down with a salesman to discuss warranties(保修单). Apparently, my unhappiness was clearly visible on my face. He asked whether something was wrong.
I explained that my husband had been a serious handball player who drove to a court in Plainview three or four times a week to play with friends in friendly but serious games. I kept the car after losing him and travelled with his handball sneakers and gloves placed neatly on the back seat. I felt close to him, driving with those precious items. Now, losing the car felt just like losing another part of him.

Then an extraordinary thing happened.
I began to feel that my husband was right there with me.
答案
Then an extraordinary thing happened. I noticed a definite sparkle in the salesman's eyes. “We used to play together,” said the salesman. This surprised me. He then went on recalling how they first met and played in a team. “Your husband was very professional. Not only was he skilled in handball, but he was a good leader in a team. He once instructed me in some motions with great patience in a practice session.” My mind was flooded with the memory of my husband.
I began to feel that my husband was right there with me. He told me not to feel frustrated with losing his car. I believed meeting this particular salesman was not a thing that happened by chance. My car was totaled as if he would have carefully and secretly organized it. All my anxiety left, and I felt happy with my purchase. I went home feeling renewed, and gently placed my husband's handball sneakers and gloves on the back seat of my new car.(142 words)

Losing a parent is one of the most painful parts of life. No matter how old we are when they leave us, it can be a heartbroken experience. Our memories are all that is left of them—and happy reminders of their love turn into our most valuable treasures. That's how Mara Soriano feels about a very special teddy bear that she tragically lost in her recent move to a new apartment.
Diagnosed with cancer 10 years ago, Mara Soriano's mother, Marilyn, gave her daughter the bear as a gift in 2017. As her cancer progressed, until her death last June, the gift felt even more special. “That bear was basically the last reminder of the mom that I knew—it was her voice that I remembered growing up,” she said in an interview.
The Build⁃A⁃Bear plush (长毛绒) toy didn't cost a lot, but it contained a recording of her late mother's voice telling her that she loved her and was proud of her. The bear, called “Mama Bear”, was in a backpack that contained electronics like an iPad and a Nintendo Switch. When the bag was stolen last week during the move, the 28⁃year⁃old was heartbroken—not for the gadgets, but for Mama Bear.
Mara posted a photo of her and her Mama Bear on Instagram, explaining the importance of the special bear. Millions of users were touched by the story. More and more people were talking about the bear but no good news for Mara. So again and again she posted online the item lost in Vancouver, Canada, and the story behind it, hoping it could catch more viewers' attention.
Actor Ryan Reynolds, a native of British Columbia, was moved by Mara's wish and then posted a plea (请求) for Mama Bear's safe return. “I think we all need this bear to come home,” he wrote. Along with the message, he also offered a huge inspiration for the thief—a $5,000 reward, “no questions asked.”

Luckily, the Internet did its thing.
The call was from a woman.
答案
Luckily, the Internet did its thing. Mara's post soon went viral. On a bright sunny day, Mara opened the door and found her special bear lying on the doorstep. Then with tears streaming down her face, she sobbed, and grabbed hold of its hands and could let it go. It is a bit of a modern miracle that would never have happened without the wonders of social media. When she was about to go upstairs, her phone rang, but the number was unfamiliar.
The call was from a woman. She said her daughter picked up Mara's teddy bear by chance in a park. Then she happened to hear her colleagues discussing the hot topic. When she saw the photo of Mara and her bear, she realized she could help her. The woman chose to put the bear in front of her house because she thought it was unnecessary to accept Ryan Reynold's reward.
