I have travelled to many places — the jungles where the water is unsafe; places with the wildest animals. Friends always ask why I, a middleaged woman with no athletic talent, go to such places. I never know how to answer — just I want to put my toes in the mud of adventure.
I stopped travelling nine years ago after I suffered a stroke (中风) caused by a disease, APS. To prevent another stroke, my doctors told me that travelling to remote places without medical help would be risky. A slip on a damp temple step, even a slight traffic accident, would no longer be mere annoyances.
My return to travel after my stroke came in baby steps — a feast in Texas; a visit to my mom in Virginia. They all came back, the freedom, the excitement and the fresh air.
The first real test of my travel courage came nine months after my stroke when I joined my husband in visiting China. After we had toured a temple, Jack wanted to ride down on a toboggan Before the stroke it would have seemed like fun for me. But now I stepped back. I feared. My mind screamed warnings of a fall or a crash. Then gathering confidence from nowhere, I lowered myself and took the flying toboggan ride, which marked my adventure travel’s coming back. Since then, I’ve dared to take challenges and have challenged many places.
But I watch my medicine like an eagle. I get my blood tested. I weigh the risks. Then, if I decide it’s okay, like that toboggan ride down the mountain, I just jump in, let go and enjoy the ride. I think I travel for hoping to broaden my world and keep me connected with friends and families. Most of all, saying “yes” to travel is related to my APS. If I let myself be afraid to travel, then my APS will win.

    A. They try to stop her. B. They don’t understand her.

To provide visitors with a special experience, theme parks are putting more money into Virtual Reality (VR) technology. In fact, the lifestyle team of the website, The Week, attended the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo in Orlando. The purpose was to do a study on the implementation (实施) of VR technology on roller coasters. The team studied 23 roller coaster manufacturers (制造商) in Europe and found that eight of those manufacturers had implemented VR technology into at least one of their roller coasters. Based on their study, it appears that VR technology is already an important and growing factor in the future development of theme parks.
The theme park industry at first saw VR technology as a cost-saving means to put new life into attractions. In 2015, companies such as Six Flags began adding VR technology to their roller coasters. It soon became clear, however, that there were many difficulties with implementing VR technology on the rides. Because of the time it took to provide riders with VR headsets, wait times and lines began to increase. Moreover, companies had to train employees how to set up the VR systems and make sure that all headsets were clean. This proved not to be cost-saving, so new systems had to be put into place.
Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia, set out to solve these problems by developing a two-part headset for the ride Battle for Eire. The park worked with Falcon’s Creative Group to develop this new technology, which allowed guests to be fitted with a headpiece while waiting in line. This shortened wait times and provided a cleaner environment. Falcon’s Creative Group and Busch Gardens used creative thinking to improve an attraction that was built around VR.
According to TEA / AECOM Global Attractions Attendance Report, 2018 saw more than 252 million people visit the top 25 theme parks in the world. To keep these numbers, it is important that these and other theme-park companies continue to come up with new ideas to create and introduce great attractions — especially those that make use of new VR technology.

    8. What did The Week find?
    A. Roller coasters were getting less popular than before.
    B. Half of the studied theme parks have used VR technology.
    C. VR technology may greatly influence the future theme parks.
    D. Theme parks have not realized the importance of VR technology.
    9. What happened after Six Flags used VR technology?
    A. A lot of money was saved.
    B. Many unexpected problems appeared.
    C. The number of visitors hugely increased.
    D. Visitors thought highly of the improvement.
    10. What did Busch Gardens do?
    A. It employed more workers.
    B. It creatively developed a headset.
    C. It chose to use its traditional technology again.
    D. It worked with other companies to build new theme parks.
    11. What did the author advise theme parks to do?
    A. To give up traditional technology.
    B. To work with other theme parks.
    C. To develop creative attractions.
    D. To build new theme parks.

Do you know that forests cover an estimated 38 percent of the total land surface of the European Union (EU)? And that these extensive areas covered with trees and underbrush need to be protected so they can continue to do good for the environment for the next generation? Now the EU has just come up with its ambitious new “Forest Strategy”.
Forests can fight against climate change and prevent biodiversity loss. They can reduce the impacts of climate change by cooling down cities, protecting us from heavy flooding, and reducing drought impacts. They are valuable ecosystems that are home to a major part of the world’s plants and animals. But forests also improve our health and well-being through functions like water regulation, erosion (侵蚀) control and air purification. And they serve as ideal settings for “recreation, relaxation and learning, as well as securing livelihoods”.
This new European-wide forest conservation vision takes in an impressive commitment to plant a minimum of three billion additional trees over the next decade. This is an ambitious plan but a long overdue one because forests have been battered by severe weather and human impacts, particularly the demand for wood over the last ten years. As the EU Observer puts it, “extreme weather events and the increasing demand for forest services and products, driven by wood-based bioenergy and international trade, have accelerated tree cover loss in the last decade.”
This EU strategy takes into account the complexity of forest sustainability Observation, knowledge exchange, ongoing monitoring and close cooperation between public and private organizations and individuals are also key elements in this new continent-wide forest protection strategy.
This is a future-focused blueprint, designed to protect these precious green areas, and ensure that the trees and greenery are here to stay!

    12. Why are two questions raised in the beginning?
    A. To show the EU’s forest coverage.
    B. To call on people to protect forests.
    C. To encourage more forest expansion.
    D. To explain the reason for the strategy.
    13. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 2?
    A. The importance of forests.
    B. The environmental role of forests.
    C. The background of the strategy.
    D. The urgency of the strategy.
    14. What does the underlined word “battered” in paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Struck. B. Controlled.
    C. Damaged. D. Removed.
    15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
    A. Planting Trees for the World
    B. Taking Forests into the Future
    C. EU’s Action to Protect the Earth
    D. Irreplaceable Benefits of Forests

    1. D 由下文中的“I’ve been in many of the _____ caves in the world”和“So more caves”可知,这里作者是说他已经去过世界上很多洞穴。
下文中的“seen other great caves”也是提示。故选B。
be happy to do sth.“愿意去做某事”。故选A。
    5. C 由下文中的解释“first come first served tickets”和“I had a lot of driving ahead of me”可知,因为有其他的安排,为了先到先买票,作者早上八点整就到达了游客中心。
    8. B 由上文中的“I was sure to _____ the Visitor Center at 8 am sharp”和“I had a lot of driving ahead of me”可知,作者早上八点整就排队买票,是因为他还有其他安排,不想错过出发最早的参观团。
    9. D 由本句中的“Not surprisingly”和“the tours take 40 people”可知,想要参加最早出发的参观团的游客不止作者一个人。
get on“加入”符合语境。故选D。
故选A。
    13. D 由上文中的“The caves themselves were OK”和“I may sound jaded”可知,因为作者已经见识过很多非常棒的洞穴,因此风洞让他有点失望。
    14. B 由上文中的“I had a lot of driving ahead of me”可知,参观完风洞,作者还有驱车参观该国家公园其他部分的安排。
    15. B 由上文中的“see buffalo and other animals wandering around”可知,因为下雨,作者没有在风洞国家公园看到很多动物。
故填its。
故填an。
故填to protect。
The official Weibo account of the Palace Museum为先行词,在后面的非限制性定语从句中作主语,所以关系代词用which。故填which。
between...and...“在……和…… 故填and。
