A Guide to New York City's Best Bookstores
In the hot and crowded summer city, there's nothing better than finding a cool and quiet bookstore to get lost in. Undoubtedly, a great bookstore can provide both relaxation and inspiration. Here are the must-visit bookstores in New York City:
Argosy Book Store
In this bookstore you can browse six floors containing walls and shelves full of thousands of rare, out-of-print, and used books. It's been family owned for three generations, since it was founded in 1925, and also specializes in antique maps. The old wooden desks, green lamps, and piles of books elegantly decorating the floors will make you feel like you've traveled through time.
192 Books
The massive, stunning glass windows of 192 Books display everything from art tomes (巨著) to illustrated children's books. You can browse selections of books on literary fiction, film, history, and even science. The shop has an artsy feel, thanks to the gallery owner Paula Cooper and her husband, Henry Holt.
Dashwood Books
For those who love photography tomes, Dashwood Books is a hidden paradise on Bond Street. Here you can find rare, limited, and out-of-print photo books. Some days, you'll ever find bargain bins (柜) located near the back of the store, with options for less than $5 a pop. Fashion designers, such as Simone Rocha, have been known to trek to the store for inspiration.
Strand
Strand is always busy, but perhaps the best place to find some peace and quiet during summer months. The third-floor houses extremely rare books. Maps and travel books are some of the options on the top floor, but the other floors also sell a variety of classics, used books and out-of-print titles.

On the night of August 24, 2001, I lost most of my right leg in an accident. At the hospital, I just kept telling myself to hold on. Weeks later I made a deal with the hospital staff that once I could roll onto my side, I could be discharged. I am proud to say that just one short week later, I was going home. The day I left the hospital, I made a promise to myself to never give up and to always live life to the fullest.
In February of 2013, my life was forever changed when I attended the Executive Assistant Organization’s Behind Every Leader event. During the conference, a sweet lady by the name of Alisson Frew dared to ask me why I did not wear a prosthesis (假肢). My short and simple answer was, “I don’t have sixty thousand dollars.” The next morning I was in tears as I learned that Alisson, Jeff Hoffman, founder of Priceline.com, and a dozen other people, had bought a prosthesis for me. From the first step, it was apparent to me just how much this would mean to me.
For a year I adjusted to the leg and settled into everyday life, until one day I realized I was making a life but not living one. After almost 13 years of thinking that I was confident, I had an unfamiliar feeling sweeping over me. For the first time in my life, I was not only confident but I was empowered! I desired to help those around me, to have them experience this unbelievable feeling for themselves.
In April of 2014, I started modeling. My dream is that one day a little girl will see me on a poster at her favorite clothing store and say, “Wow, she is amazing, and she only has one leg. I could do that too someday, even though I have a disability.”
24.What do we know about the author from paragraph 1?
A. She was humorous and outgoing. B. She was determined and optimistic.
C. She was intelligent and hardworking. D. She was generous and kind-hearted.
25.What happened in 2013 that changed the author’s life forever?
A. She made friends with Alisson. B. She met some famous people.
C. She joined an organization. D. She got a precious gift.
26.How will the author help those around her?
A. By inspiring them. B. By entertaining them.
C. By doing voluntary work. D. By offering financial support.
27.What would be the best title for the text?
A. A short and simple answer B. How I survived a terrible accident
C.I lost a leg but gained a purpose D. Stay strong in the face of disability
C
To travel abroad, we often meet the problem of what to take and how to take it. Take as little as possible. Choose clothes for your use in different kinds of situations and when you have made your final choice, take half of it! It’s always a big problem to take too many things, and anyway if necessary, you can buy what you need in America. Things like jeans, T-shirts and other clothes are good buys in the US. If you hunt around you can usually find something on sale.
Whatever baggage you take, make sure it is easy to take. Getting on and off buses and trains, even just changing planes, can be challenging if your bags are too heavy or too many. The best way is to take one holdall, and a smaller bag. Even when you have to check in your holdall, at the airport or bus station, you can keep all your money and documents by your side. It is also a good idea to keep a change of clothing in your shoulder bag in case your suitcase or backpack gets lost by an airline or a bus company.
The means your choice of travelling around the US will depend on your money, your time and something else. Since there are certain discounts available to travelers who buy their tickets outside the US, it is a good idea to make travel plans before you go. Also, when you buy your tickets outside the US, you save the eight percent sales tax. Travel is like everything else in America—you have to shop around for the best buys. Never be afraid to ask for the cheapest fare. The clerk seldom offers you the cheapest one.
28.What is the author’s idea about what to take while travelling abroad?
A. Take as few things as you can.
B. Take as many clothes as possible.
C. Take only your tickets and money.
D. Take whatever you can use in different situations.
29.What does the underlined word “holdall” mean in paragraph 2?
A.A large bag. B.A hand bag. C.A shoulder bag. D.A coat pocket.
30.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. It’s difficult to bargain in the US. B Travelling in the US costs little money.
C. Clerks prefer to show the cheapest things. D. Tickets bought outside the US are cheaper.
31.What is the text mainly about?
A. Shopping in America. B. Advice on travelling in America.
C. The means of travelling in America. D. The ways of saving money in America.
D
When we have to wrap a gift or mend the ripped (撕破的) page of a book, we probably reach for tape. The sticky stuff is everywhere. But tape has a disadvantage. Its adhesive—the polymer (聚合物) that makes it sticky—is made from a fossil fuel. Now scientists at the University of Delaware have come up with a greener solution. They’ve made a new kind of glue from chemicals found in trees.
Lignin (木质素) is a natural polymer. It makes woody plants strong and stable. So the scientists wondered whether they could replace oil with plants as a starting ingredient. And their new data confirms that they can.
The team started with the poplar tree. They put its wood in chemicals and then made some minor chemical changes. This gave their new polymer the chemical features that they wanted.
They coated a thin, tape-like piece of plastic with the new glue. Then they conducted “peel tests”. They measured the force needed to peel off the tape after it had been pressed down flat. The researchers compared this test tape to types that you can buy today in the store. And their new tape performed well.
“If this new adhesive were someday used for store-bought tapes, it could help the environment in many ways. Lignin is a waste from making paper. So this glue wouldn’t just replace adhesives made from crude oil (原油),” said Zhuohua Sun, a chemist at the University of Groningen. “It would also prevent lignin from going in the trash.”
Thomas Epps, a chemical engineer and materials scientist at the University of Delaware, led the team that invented the new glue. He hopes that he and his colleagues can use different plants to make even more adhesives. “Could we use corn or grass as an alternative to trees?” he asks. “If this is possible, it would certainly expand the types of glues we can create.”
32.What’s wrong with the traditional tape according to paragraph 1?
A. It is harmful to the environment. B. It is hard to press it down flat.
C. It is not sticky enough. D. It is hard to peel it off.
33.Why did the researchers conduct the “peel tests”?
A. To help market the new tape. B. To find a proper coat for the new tape.
C. To make improvements on the new tape. D. To figure out how effective the new tape was.
34.What is Zhuohua Sun’s attitude toward the new tape?
A. Disapproving. B. Optimistic. C. Objective. D. Cautious.
35.What will Thomas Epps most probably do next?
A. Test on corn or grass. B. Call on people to protect trees.
C. Find new ways to reuse lignin. D. Increase the popularity of the tape.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The benefits of reading start with the first book a baby hears and continue into childhood and throughout the child’s life. Here are some reasons why reading is important.
Reading teaches children about the world around them. 36 They are exposed to ways of life, ideas and beliefs about the world which may be different from those surrounding them. This builds a store of background knowledge, which helps younger children learn to read confidently.
37 When we read, our brains translate the descriptions we read of people, places and things into pictures. When we are reading a story, we are also imagining how the characters are feeling. We use our own experiences to imagine how we would feel in the same situation.
Children who read do better at school. And they don’t just do better at subjects like reading, English and history. 38
Reading is a great form of entertainment! A paperback book or an e-reader doesn’t take up much space so you can take it anywhere and you’ll never be lonely or bored if you have a book in your bag. 39
Reading relaxes the body and calms the mind. 40 The constant movement, flashing lights and noise are quite stressful for our brains. When we read in silence, the black print on a white page is much less stressful for our eyes and brains.
A. Reading improves concentration.
B. Reading develops children’s imagination.
C. We seem to have forgotten how to relax and how to be silent.
D. Children learn new words and greatly enlarge their vocabulary.
E. They do better at all subjects and they do better all the day through school.
F. You can read while waiting for a friend or during a flight delay at an airport.
G. By reading, children learn about people, places and events outside their own experience.

Lorena parted the curtain in her living room and looked out onto the wet street. She was relieved when the sunlight appeared. If it didn’t stop raining, it would ruin her day. Her mother had promised to drive her to Fashion Fair if it were sunny. Lorena was desperate to go there because she had to buy a Nike jacket.
Earlier that Wednesday afternoon, Eddie, the most popular seventh-grader, had given Lorena his jacket and asked her to keep an eye as he would play basketball in a hurry. Lorena was quite happy to be of help.
During her last class, the biology teacher made them cut apart dead frogs. For fear of getting blood on Eddie’s jacket, Lorena folded it and placed it on a chair. Then she took the knife and cut the skin quickly. She felt sick opening the frog’s belly.
When the bell rang, Lorena hurried out because the bus she caught for home left ten minutes after school. She raced to board the bus and found a seat. After a few minutes, the driver started the engine and drove away when Lorena looked out of the window and saw Eddie. “The jacket!” she screamed. She shot from her seat and ran up to the driver. “You’ve got to stop! I forgot Eddie’s jacket!” “Who’s Eddie? I don’t know Eddie,” the driver said angrily. “Sit down.”
All that evening Lorena was upset and blamed her biology teacher for her problem. If he hadn’t made them cut apart frogs, she wouldn’t have been so absent-minded. The next day Lorena rushed to the biology room. The jacket was not there!
“How can I ever tell Eddie?” Lorena closed her eyes. She spent most of her break and lunch period in the rest room, brushing her hair and worrying. On Friday she stayed home to avoid Eddie. She told her mother she wanted to go shopping to buy her a gift for her birthday, which was the next week. Actually, she wanted to buy a Nike jacket with all her savings at Fashion Fair.

【参考范文】One possible version:
Mom drove Lorena to Fashion Fair and left, asking her not to waste money. Lorena promised and ran in. Stopping at the area of Nike jackets, she wondered what size Eddie wore. She tried one on and found the sleeves coming down over her hands. She felt it must be the size. She walked to the checkout counter and paid the money. She was overjoyed to have settled the problem. Then she headed for the perfume department to buy a gift for Mom. It was too bad that she didn’t have enough money.
Lorena was about to leave when she saw Eddie in his Nike jacket. With a tight face, Eddie scolded Lorena for leaving his jacket in the biology room. “I thought we could be friends,” he complained. “I can explain,” Lorena begged. “You’re of no help at all!” Eddie rushed off. “What’s the hell going on?” Lorena wondered. Realizing some people could never be friends, she wiped her eyes, returned the jacket, bought Mom some cheese instead of the romantic perfume and went home.

W: I can’t see why you like the sports channel so much. It’s so boring.
M: Oh, no. It’s my favorite TV channel. What about you?
W: I enjoy watching history and nature programs. I also like to watch the news.
(Text 6)
W: Good afternoon, sir. Can I help you?
M: Yes, we need a room for the night. Have you got any rooms available?
W: Yes, would you like a single room or a double room?
M: A double room.
W: How many nights would you like to stay?
M:We are only staying overnight. We’ll check out tomorrow morning. How much is it?
W: It’s $68 per night.
M: OK. Do you accept credit cards?
W: Yes, we do. Now your room number is 204.Here is the key.
M: Thank you.

W: Hey, welcome to Berlin! It’s great to see you again.
M: Yeah, good to see you too! Have you been waiting here at the station long?
W: Only fifteen minutes. But let’s get out of this cold and go to my apartment! How are you feeling after that long bus ride?
M: Ah, it wasn’t too bad. It was only nineteen hours.
W: That’s crazy! You could’ve flown here from London for 60 euros, and it would only have taken an hour and a half. Was it really worth all that time, just to save a bit of money?
M: Well, it was a pretty uncomfortable ride, to be honest. The bus was starting to smell toward the end of it, and there was a guy next to me who was breathing really loudly while he was sleeping. But the reason I took the bus was because it’s more environmentally friendly than flying.
W: I think it’s great you want to help protect the environment. But you look so exhausted right now. I just think you should be a little more careful with your health.
M: Well, I wasn’t expecting the bus to be so unpleasant. But you’re right. Next time I visit you, I’ll probably fly.
(Text 8)
W: Good morning, sir. How can I help you?
M: I’d like to inquire about the flight to Madrid. Are there any flights next Saturday?
W: Let me check it on the computer for you. Here we are. There is a morning flight on China Eastern Airlines. Are you traveling alone, sir?
M: Yes, I am. What time does the flight leave?
W: It leaves at 9:00 am. How would you like to fly? Economy, business class or first class?
M: Business class, please.
W: Single or return?
M: Single, please.
W: What’s your name?
M: Tom Ward.
W: OK, Mr Ward. I’ve booked you on China Eastern Airlines, Flight Number 552, which is leaving at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on the 6th of October. Please be sure to check in two hours in advance.
M: Thank you.

W: Good morning. Today we’ll talk about theme parks and hear from Andy Wells who has written a guide to theme parks around the world. Welcome to the program, Andy.
M: Hi, it’s good to be here.
W: You really have a dream job, don’t you? Flying around the world all the time, visiting adventure parks...
M: Yes, it’s exciting. But it’s really hard work too.
W: I bet. So, what’s the world’s number one theme park?
M: That all depends. In terms of numbers, it has to be Magic Kingdom in Florida. But the most popular park for people who like adventure rides is Cedar Point in Ohio.
W: In your book, there are many theme parks in Asia too. Can you tell us about them?
M: Sure. First, the Universal Studio in Singapore is very good. There is going to be a dark ride inside a building there. That’s fun. In China, more parks will open in the next few years, including a park called Ocean Kingdom. That will have the world’s longest roller coaster.
W: OK, thank you for your coming to my studio.
M: My pleasure.

M: The best way of learning a language is to use it. The best way to learn English is speaking it as much as possible. Sometimes you will get your words mixed up and people will not understand you. Sometimes people will say things too quickly and you can’t understand them. But if you keep your sense of humor, you can always have a good laugh about the mistakes you make. Don’t be unhappy if people seem to be laughing at your mistakes. It is much better for people to be laughing at your mistakes than to be angry because they don’t understand what you are saying. The most important rule of learning English is, “Don’t be afraid of making mistakes; everyone makes mistakes.” bright, sunny skies.
