My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month.
Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge comes from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor, but sadly, reading isn’t one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can’t read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He’s busy, so I think sitting down to read for just 15 minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading. My dad is not the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there are lots of benefits from reading, which screen-based activities don’t have.
One thing I personally love reading is being transported to another world—I often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.
I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people’s points of view, and understand other people’s decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling—you really can be inside someone else’s head!
So give it a go! If you’d like to read, why not try 15 minutes, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck, and happy reading!

Frogs are slimy (黏滑的), noisy and often colorful. New research shows that Goliath frogs, also called helicopter parents, are the world’s largest frog species, found in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. They could look after their babies very well. And they would build ponds for their eggs and young babies, moving rocks more than half of their body weight in the process.
A team of researchers from Cameroon and Germany studied the animals, which can weigh up to 6.6 pounds and measure more than 13 inches in length when fully grown. The heavy labor that the frogs do could explain their size, scientists believe.
The researchers found that the frogs could change existing natural ponds or create new nests in small ponds, about 3 feet wide and 4 inches deep, along river banks in Cameroon. “They sometimes move rocks weighing up to 2 pounds. We think that this activity may explain why adult frogs need to be giant in the first place,” said Marvin Schäfer, lead author of the study. As well as being strong, the frogs have also proved themselves to be anxious parents, raising their young babies in ponds away from fast-flowing water and potential enemies. “Giant frogs are the first African amphibian (两栖动物) species now known to actively prepare or even construct sites for their offspring,” said Mark-Oliver Rödel, project leader and president of conservation group Frogs & Friends, in a press release. “This shows how little we know about the biology, even some of the most wonderful creatures of our planet.”
Scientists hope the research will help protect the rare frogs, which are considered endangered. Reduced in habitat (栖息地), climate change and pollution are the main causes of species loss and are threatening more than 40% of amphibians, a report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services found in May.
28.What can we know about Goliath frogs?
A. They make no noise.
B. They live across the world.

A. There are large natural ponds.
B. They have strong bodies for work.
C. There babies prefer new surroundings.
D. They are often attacked by the enemies.
30.What does the underlined word “offspring” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Potential enemies. B. Young babies. C. Partners. D. Rocks.
31.What is one of the causes to make Goliath frogs endangered?
A. Their reduced living places.
B. Lack of enough sources of food.
C. The increasing number of other species.

People will tell you the only way to really learn a language is to completely immerse (浸入) yourself in a country where that language is spoken. Not all language learners, of course, will have the opportunity to spend some time in an immersion environment. But if you can’t actually fly across the world to learn a new language, you can always create an immersion environment where you can talk to native speakers.
That’s where Babbel comes in. Babbel is one of the most popular language learning apps on the market for studying new languages at your own pace. The app emphasizes real-life conversational skills, so you won’t be stopped by grammatical structures and verb patterns.
And right now, you can get 15% off a lifetime subscription (订阅) to Babbel Language Learning ($150; stacksocial.com). A lifetime subscription is huge when it comes to getting the most out of the app, since you’ll be able to return to lessons time and time again and brush up on whichever section or topic you might need.
So how does it all work? First, you’ll choose one of 14 languages. While Babbel offers familiar languages like Spanish and Italian, it also offers less commonly studied ones like Polish, Indonesian and more. Once you pick your language, you’ll choose a wide range of real-life topics. Each course takes about 10 to 15 minutes, so you can pick one up on the way to work, during your lunch break, or really at any point you have some time to kill.
Beyond this, Babbel includes a ton of additional features tailored to making sure you learn the language in a real, practical and accurate way. The app uses speech recognition technology to make sure your pronunciation is accurate compared with how native speakers would say certain words.
32.What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A. The terrifying experiences of travelling.
B. The importance of language learning environment.
C. Different ways to learn a new language.
D. Opportunities to communicate with native speakers.
33.What can we know about Babbel?
A. It’s a tool for learning languages.
B. It is designed in various types.
C. It focuses more on grammar structures.
D. It’s the most popular app in the market.
34.What should the users do first to learn with the app?
A. Choose the place to learn a course.
B. Pick the language they want to learn.
C. Calculate the reading time.
D. Choose a proper topic.
35.Why does Babbel use speech recognition technology?

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
We have all heard of superfoods whether from articles or in the news. But what are they? 36 Superfoods are things you eat that do more than satisfy your hunger because they help your body work better. Think of your body as a car. The better the gas you put in your car, the better it will run. 37
As the saying goes, “You are what you eat.” This is very true because if you are eating foods that are full of fat, your body will most likely show it. On the other hand, if you are eating energy-filled foods, your body will show that as well.
38 They are filled with fiber (纤维), proteins, and important nutrients that are easily used by the body. To become a superfood officially, a food has to meet three requirements. First, it must be available(可获得的) to everyone. Second, it must contain nutrients that help you live longer. 39
Eating superfoods can change your life in many ways. Not surprisingly, people who start eating them lose weight. One reason for this is that many superfoods are naturally low in calories (卡路里). 40 With most diets, people pay attention to what shouldn’t be eaten. With superfoods, they focus on all the great things they can eat. There are other benefits to adding them to your diet as well. Eating superfoods over time helps keep you looking young and fight heart disease.
A. Our bodies are just the same.
B. This is a good question with a simple answer.
C. Another reason is that sticking to eating them is very easy.
D. Lastly, its health benefits must be proven by scientific studies.
E. Some of the top superfoods are berries, nuts, and whole grains.
F. Getting a wide variety of foods, superfoods included, is the better solution.
G. If you want to start adding superfoods to your diet, do it at your own pace.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
It was the first day of our new grade. Everyone in the classroom was talking happily. When the door opened, all of us stopped talking and turned to look. In came our teacher Ms Sullivan, followed by an ordinary-looking boy.
“This boy’s name is Rafael,” Ms Sullivan said. “He’s going to be in our class. Make sure all of you welcome him warmly.” The class clapped. But I didn’t want to have a second look at the newcomer, for he was so ordinary.
“Oh, I forgot to mention one thing,” Ms Sullivan said. “Rafael has hearing problems. Normally he would have hearing aids on, but his old ones have just been broken. His doctor suggested that he stay at home until he got his new ones. However, Rafael insisted on attending his first day of school. So if you want to communicate with him, you have to write it on a piece of paper.”
Ms Sullivan’s words sent the whole class up into an uproar (嘈杂). Some students looked at each other with surprise. Others voiced cries of concern out of pity. Ms Sullivan calmed everyone down and continued. “I’d like someone to personally help him out throughout the day. Do I have any volunteers?”
“How can a disabled person be smart?” I thought to myself. I refused to raise my hand, expecting someone else would. But nobody did or said anything. Dead silence spread across the classroom. It was by total bad luck that my eyes happened to meet Ms Sullivan’s.
“How about you, James?” She asked. “Is it okay for you to take care of Rafael just for today?”
It is difficult to refuse a request by someone, especially if that person is a teacher. I sighed and nodded. Ms Sullivan gestured for Rafael to sit beside me and then asked us to share our holiday stories with the class.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Immediately, the class became excited.

One possible version:
Immediately, the class became excited. Some could hardly wait to share their holiday trips. Joy filled every corner of the classroom. Puzzled at the sudden excitement, Rafael turned to me for reasons in written words. Surprisingly, my explanation put a smile on his face. “Any more volunteer to share your story?” asked Ms Sullivan, whose words I set down on paper for Rafael.
Then Rafael rose and walked onto the platform. Greeting us with a smile, Rafael began to share his story, which left me surprised. I felt more ashamed to learn that he ran a website to help children with hearing problems and to think that disabled people can’t be smart. Then the whole class gave him a big round of applause. I clapped my hands even harder, determined never to judge a book by its cover.

W: I promise I’ll hand in the next one on time. Just please don’t fail me.
M: I’ll give you one more chance, but just one. Don’t let me down.
(Text 7)
W: That’s a beautiful car you’re looking at.
M: Yes, I like the red color. How much does it cost?
W: It’s 40,000 dollars. What’s the matter? Is it too expensive for you?
M:Well, I don’t mind the price, but I’m worried about the size. It can only seat two people.
W: I understand. Let’s look at something a little bigger. This blue one has room for seven passengers.
M: Well, I don’t like the way it looks. Maybe something smaller, like for four passengers?
W: I know what you need. This green one is perfect for you. Five seats, including the driver.
M: This one is much better.
W: Let’s take it for a test drive. After that, you can think about it or talk to your family. Buying a car is a big decision.
M: All right, give me the keys.
(Text 8)
M: I just went to the doctor, and he said that according to my BMI, which means Body Mass Index, I am officially overweight. Do I look fat to you?
W: I mean, you could lose a few pounds, but I certainly don’t think you look fat. Did he suggest anything to help you lose weight?
M: He just said the usual stuff, like “eat less and exercise more”. I guess I could cut out soda...
W: Maybe you should cut out the sweets.
M: I eat sweets when I’m stressed out, so that’s going to be hard. I guess I should go to the gym tomorrow. I’m a member, but I never go.
W: I thought we were going to that new restaurant tomorrow after work. We’ve been talking about it for weeks.
M: Well, it’s probably not healthy for me to be going out to eat, you know? The gym seems like a smarter choice. Come to think of it, maybe I’ll go to the grocery store tonight and stock up on healthy options, too.
(Text 9)
M: I’m sorry that I missed our first history project meeting yesterday.
W: That’s okay. You didn’t miss much. Jane didn’t show up, either.
M: So it was just the three of you?
W: Yeah. Arthur had some good ideas, though.
M: So what are we doing?
W: Our topic is ancient Greece. There are two parts. The first is to make a poster. It should include information about Greek entertainment, government, geography...
M: And history. Mr Jones would not be happy with us if we didn’t include that.
W: Right. The second part is to create an activity for the class.
M: I’ll do that.
W: Great. So, I’ve put Debbie in charge of the outline. Arthur will find the stuff we need to make the poster.
M: What about the others?
W: Everyone else is doing the research. Jane does well in Mrs Stone’s English class, so I’ll get her to do the writing.
M: Perfect. I’ll get to work, then.
(Text 10)
M: And now for the weather report for the following 72 hours. The national weather map shows a high-pressure area all along the eastern coastline, which will bring very pleasant, sunny weather from New York to Florida. But showers and thunderstorms are happening from the Ohio River all the way south to the Gulf coast, pouring down heavy amounts of rain over the Southern states. By far the worst of the storms has happened in and around Texas. Some Texas stations have reported up to fifteen inches of rain in a 24-hour period with high winds and thunderstorms. Two typhoons were reported along the Gulf coast of Texas, but we haven’t got the exact information about any damage or injuries. Heavy amounts of snow were reported in the Rocky Mountain area with record cold temperatures in Denver and Boulder. As much as a foot of snow has fallen in some of the mountain stations. In contrast, temperatures in Arizona and the desert Southwest went over the 100-degree mark again under bright, sunny skies.
