I created a writing group at my school this year,and it has become a hit among the students who enjoy writing.Let me share a few tips that you may use to start your own.

Set up separate groups for different grade levels,or ability levels.

You probably don’t want to mix a gifted eighth grader with a second grader who writes very little.In a small school,a group of two or three grade levels may work.In a larger school,you could have a beginner group,more advanced group,and publishing group.Members can move to more proper groups if they are not comfortable in the current one.

Advertise the group in different ways.

Ask your students to spread advertisements,put them on the school website,in the school newsletter(简报),and personally invite students who you think should come.

The first meeting should be very open.

At the first meeting,you should tell the students that this group is all about them.It is not a class,not a grade,not a requirement.Then tell them what writing groups are going to do,and ask what they would like to do.

Set up a time to meet once or twice a month.

It is necessary for students to bring their writing.The group could go in a number of directions:criticise each other’s work,read writing aloud,read silently,publish work in a booklet,publish online,play creativity games,or do an online chat with a published author.

It will take a little while to find out what works best for your group.

Bishop’s struggle to locate herself in the world is seen no more clearly than in Sandpiper.It deals with searching for something in a confusing world.She uses the metaphor (暗喻) of the bird which is “looking for something”.The “something” isn’t specific.It seems as if the bird doesn’t know what he wants;the only certain thing is that he is searching.

Bishop’s poems are personal on a more subtle level,especially when her childhood,travels,etc,are taken into consideration.It is believed that Bishop is a complex poet who uses her poetry to find this feeling of belonging.

Chinese poetic history is extremely long and colourful.The Tang dynasty,the golden age of Chinese ancient poetry,produced many famous poems.ThreeHundredPoemsoftheTangDynasty,was compiled by Heng Tang Tui Shi of the Qing dynasty.This was used for very many years to teach primary students.
