一、阅读理解
Some libraries use unique architecture to encourage visitors to explore the bookshelves and settle down with a new book, or use roving libraries to bring books to hard-to-reach populations. No matter how they achieve it, these novel libraries are keeping the magic of reading alive.
Bishan Library (Singapore)
Built in 2006, this library with skylights and trellises, is meant to invoke a modern glass treehouse. Glass pods of varying colors stick out of the building randomly to create cozy yet airy corners for reading throughout the building. At the same time, a more open-plan children’s room on the basement level invites interaction while preventing noise from filtering upward and disturbing those concentrating in the lofty perches above.
Stuttgart City Library (Stuttgart, Germany)
Opened in 2011, this nine-story public library is characterized by its attractive white color scheme (lit by blue light at night), its bold cubic shape. This cultural center for the city, designed to feel open and full of light, can be entered from any of its four sides, and people can borrow artwork as well as books.
The Camel Library Service (North Eastern Province, Kenya)
To combat low literacy rates in the desert of Kenya, the government created a roaming library composed of nine camels bringing books to villages. The library travels four days a week serving the region’s nomadic people. With more funding, they plan to increase their reach both in distance and the books they carry.
Macquarie University Library (Sydney, Australia)
A wonderful combination of cutting-edge and sustainable ideas, this building was made from recycled materials, features a green roof, and was designed to look like the shape of a eucalyptus tree. It is also state of the art, using robot cranes to bring requested books to the front desk.

About half a billion people depend on the ecosystems created and sustained by corals. And with climate change threatening coral’s survival, marine scientist Enric Sala had a goal that might have seemed impossible.
“We wanted to get into a time machine, go back hundreds of years and actually see a coral reef like they used to be everywhere, before we started exploiting them and polluting them and killing them all over the world, ” Sala said.
The goal was made possible during an expedition Sala led in 2009. The team traveled to a corner of the South Pacific Ocean, to see if the vibrant reefs there held any clues that could help them understand how to bring damaged reefs in other parts of the ocean back to health.
“The bottom was covered by thriving (茂盛的) coral. Vivid colors surrounded me - purples, reds, oranges, yellows and greens. It was so beautiful, ” Sala said.
His team presented their findings to officials in the island country of Kiribati. The government took steps to protect the waters from fishing and other human activity. But between 2015 and 2016, record levels of ocean warming damaged half the coral reefs the team had been studying.
After hearing that news, they lost hope for the health of coral reefs. Last year, they went in for another dive. Despite the reported conditions, the reef had somehow restored itself, filled with life and color once more. Sala and his team were overjoyed. This is something that Sala says can be owed to two key factors.
The first is, thankfully, half of the corals didn’t die. Despite the rise in temperatures, there were enough surviving corals left behind to help reproduce the reefs. The second was the Kiribati government’s decision to fully protect those waters.
“It has an abundance of fish. So they were eating all the algae (藻类) that would smother (窒息) the dead coral skeletons and make it impossible for the corals to come back. Luckily, other places like the Caribbean also witness the good change, ” Sala explained.
4.What unlikely goal does Sala have?
A.Schooling people to protect corals.
B.Preventing people from damaging corals.
C.Appealing to people to deal with climate change.
D.Going back to the past when corals were thriving.
5.What led to the restoration of the coral reefs?
A.Half of the damaged coral reefs restored themselves.
B.A flood of fish ate all the algae covering the dead corals.
C.The government protected waters and survival corals multiplied.
D.The government took measures to stop fishing and human activity.
6.What can we learn about the Caribbean from Sala’s words?
A.It hardly offers enough nutrition to fish.
B.It has also suffered large losses of corals.
C.It is impossible for the corals to come back.
D.It has an abundance of algae.
7.What can be the most suitable title for the text?
A.How Did the Coral Reefs Restore?
B.Where Are the Damaged Coral Reefs?
C.What Does Biodiversity Show in the Ocean?
D.What Are the Disadvantages of Climate Change?
It’s an unconventional setting. Children of varying ages are reading actively. Seated next to them are teenagers, many of them girls, staring at the Hindi alphabet(字母表)on the blackboard. In charge of this class are three young girls, not much older than their students. But when Tabassum, Tarannum and Rubina, no more than 22, start speaking, you know the difference. Their confidence takes you by surprise.
A little over 10 kilometres from Varanasi lies the village of Sajoi where illiteracy(文 盲)was quite common. It had blocked out modernity until recently, especially when it came to its women. Educating girls was considered pointless, and the possibility of women stepping out of their homes, unthinkable.
Things began to change in 2010 when Human Welfare Association (HWA), identified Sajoi for a planned intervention. HWA set up a centre in Sajoi to offer free education but the villagers needed to be convinced to join in. The organization needed volunteers who valued education. Tabassum, Tarannum and Rubina embraced the opportunity.
After completing their high school education, the girls set out on another important mission-persuading the locals to send their children to schools. “We went knocking at every door, talking to elders, “recalls Rubina. Some villagers asked them to mind their own business. “We didn’t let all this distract our attention from the main goal, ” Rubina says.
The girls honed their approach. They didn’t ask people to stop their children from working, but urged them to send them to schools for an hour or two. Slowly, children started trickling(缓 慢增加)in. Motivational Learning Centre, as the girls call it, is no replacement for school. It is there, in fact, that they create the hunger for knowledge. It also helps school-going children so they don’t lose interest and drop out.
Those who doubted the girls’ intentions now recommend the centre to others. The number of admissions to schools has steadily increased and the dropout rate in Sajoi has fallen.
8.How does the author start the text?
A.By describing a typical scene.
B.By comparing different views.
C.By analyzing certain reasons.
D.By providing background information.
9.What was the major obstacle for girls to receive education in Sajoi?
A.Most families had a tight budget.
B.They were engaged in working.
C.The locals didn’t value education much.
D.The educational resources were insufficient.
10.What does the underlined word “honed” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Abandoned.
B.Explained.
C.Adopted.
D.Improved.
11.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To explain the consequences of poor knowledge.
B.To show efforts to fight against illiteracy in India.
C.To reflect on the current educational situation in India.
D.To inform us of the urgent need for the youth to get educated.
Fifty or sixty years ago, computers were very simple machines, but even then scientists believed that one day machines would be able to “think” and that they would probably be as intelligent as humans. The question was, “How can we measure the intelligence of a machine?” Alan Turing, who had helped to break the German Enigma code during the Second World War, came up with an answer. He said we need to ask, “Can this computer talk? Can it have a conversation like a human?” If it can, he argued, then it is intelligent and it can think. In a Turing test, judges sit at a screen and have a chatroom conversation with the chatbot program. They don’t know if they are chatting with another person or with a chat bot. After exchanging messages for five minutes, the judge decides if he or she is chatting with a human or a machine.
An American called Hugh Loebner was fascinated by Turing’s idea, and he offered a prize of $100,000 to the creator of the first chat bot to pass the Turing test. In order to win the $100,000, a chat bot must convince at least 30% of the judges that it is human. Many chat bots have entered the competition, but so far no chat bot has won the big money prize.
But is the Turing test a good way to decide if a machine is intelligent? Critics argue that the chat bots in the competition are merely imitating humans. Humans are the only animals on Earth that can speak, and that’s why Turing chose to focus on it. But what is really impressive, critics say, is that machines do things that we can’t do. For example, it is amazing that Google can search hundreds of millions of websites for a single word in a matter of seconds. The achievements like this are far more interesting and useful than a chat bot’s.
Fans of the Turing test, on the other hand, feel that humans are themselves machines. It’s just that our brains are far more complex than computers. As philosopher and scientist Daniel Dennett said in a recent interview, “It’s not impossible to have a conscious robot. You’re looking at one.”
12.According to the Turing test, what would a computer be able to do if it could think?
A.Break the Enigma code.
B.Chat with another computer.
C.Talk to people like an ordinary person does.
D.Have a chatroom conversation for five minutes.
13.What can be inferred about the chat bots that enter the Loebner competition?
A.They have a 30% chance of winning.
B.They share prize money of $100,000.
C.They will never win the big money prize.
D.They need to appear human to about a third of the judges.
14.What do the critics of the Turing test argue?
A.Google can do a great deal better than humans.
B.The winner simply has to copy human behaviour.
C.Turing focused on the wrong type of intelligence.
D.Chatbots are designed to do things that we can’t do.
15.Which of the following would Daniel Dennett probably agree with?
A.Humans are just very complex robots.
B.Humans will lose consciousness one day.
C.Humans and computers are equally clever.
D.Humans are more intelligent than computers.

Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters.
