America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or older. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways — education, medicine and business.[Z-X-X-K]
Quietly, the graying of America has made us a very different society — one in which people have a quite different idea of what kind of behavior is suitable at various ages. A person's age no longer tells you anything about his or her social position, marriage or health. There's no longer a particular year in which one goes to school or goes to work or gets married or starts a family. The social clock that kept us on time and told us when to go to school, get a job, or stop working isn't as strong as it used to be. It doesn't surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has bee a father for the first time.
Public ideas are changing. Many people say, “I am much younger than my mother or my father was at my age”. No one says “Act your age” anymore. We've stopped looking with surprise at older people who act in youthful ways.
    21. What effect does the graying of America have on its society according to the passage?
    A. The birth rate is on the decrease recently in America.
    B. Age is no longer an indication of one’s marriage.
    C. The society demands more and more nowadays.
    D. The aging of population causes many social problems.
    22. If a 25-year-old man bees general manager of a big firm, the writer of the text would most probably consider it _______.
    A. unbelievable
    B. wonderful
    C. normal
    D. unreasonable
    23. “Act your age” means people should _________.
    A. be active when they are old.
    B. do the right things at the right age.
    C. show respect for their parents young or old.
    D. take more physical exercise suitable to their age

    B
Today we talk about proverbs. A proverb is a short, well- known saying that expresses a mon truth or belief. Proverbs are found in most cultures and are often very old.  In American history, Benjamin Franklin was famous for his proverbs. He lived in the 1700s and was a leader of the American Revolution against English rule. He was also a scientist, inventor and writer.
Franklin published a book called Poor Richard's Almanac. He included many proverbs he had heard or created. Some of them are still used today, like:” Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Franklin is also remembered for other proverbs like “A penny saved is a penny earned.” This means that money should not be wasted.
Here are other examples of proverbs that Americans use. The first ones are about love. Some people say,” All is fair in love and war.” They mean that anything you do in a relationship or in battle is acceptable. Another proverb about love is, “ Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” This means you love someone even more when he or she is far away. But other people say,” out of sight, out of mind.”You may not even think about that person when he or she is not with you. Which of these proverbs do you think is most true?
Another proverb says “Love is blind.” In other words, when you are in love with someone, you may refuse to see anything bad about that person. Some people are only interested in having a relationship with someone who is very good-looking. You might tell them that “Beauty is only skin deep.” Your girlfriend may be lovely to look at, but she may also have some bad qualities. Or your boyfriend is a wonderful person, but not good-looking. So what a person looks like is not really important.
Sadly, we have no more time for this program. So we must say,” All good things must e to an end.”Thanks for listening.
    24. Which of the following is TRUE about a proverb?
    A. A proverb is a long and famous saying.
    B. A proverb is often created by great people
    C. A proverb often holds a mon truth.
    D. Most proverbs are found in civilized cultures.
    25. Which of following proverbs was created by Benjamin Franklin ____.
    A. Early birds catch worms.
    B. No pains, no gains.
    C. A penny saved is a penny earned.
    D. Out of sight, out of mind.
    26. What does “Absence makes the heart grow fonder “mean?
    A. Love fades away with time going by.
    B. Love makes people stay closer and closer.
    C. Distance makes two people love each other more.
    D. People in love bee more and more alike.
    27. What is this passage likely to be used for?
    A. An English radio program.
    B. An English TV program.
    C. An English speech contest.
    D. An English textbook.

    C
An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer, a contractor, of his plans to leave the house-building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could get by.
The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to shoddy workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career.
When the carpenter finished his work and the builder came to inspect the house, the contractor handed the front-door key to the carpenter. “This is your house,” he said, “my gift to you.” What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was [building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.
So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted way, reacting rather than acting, willing to put up less than the best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized that we would have done it differently.
Think of yourself as the carpenter. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one more day, that day deserves to be lived graciously and with dignity. The plaque on the wall says, “Life is a do-it-yourself project.” Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes and the choices you make today.
    28. What did the carpenter plan to do after retirement?
    A. Enjoy family happiness.
    B. Switch to another field.
    C. Start his own business.
    D. Build a house of his own.
    29. How did the contractor plan to deal with the house he asked the carpenter to build?
    A. He planned to sell it to one of his customers.
    B. He planned to send it to the carpenter as a gift.
    C. He planned to fill it with his favorites.
    D. He planned to send it to his partner.
    30. What can we know about the last house the carpenter built?
    A. It was of low quality.
    B. It did not satisfy the contractor.
    C. It was perfect in workmanship and materials.
    D. It was the best of all the houses he had built.
    31. What does the story intend to tell us?
    A. We should focus on the future life.
    B. We should react to life rather than act.
    C. We should build our houses in life.
    D. We should always do our best.

    D
Never say “never” but always mention your “achievement”, is the advice for job hunters trying to fill in application forms.
Admissions advisers and psychologists at the University of Hertfordshire have drawn up a list of the 10 top words to make a good impression in applications.
They have also listed the 10 worst words, including “hate” and “nothing”. This advice also tells applicants not to say “mistakes” but to mention their “valuable lessons”.
If applicants are worried about having too many valuable lessons, the Hertfordshire academics also remend avoiding other less than positive words, such as “panic”, “problems” and “awful”.
None of these words are good ways of selling your skills to employers. If you want to push more positive buttons, there is a list of feel-good words for applications, which will produce a more appreciative reaction. These good words include “experience”, “involved”, “planning” and “developed”.
The advisers say panies or universities will see many similar application letters - and that the choice of language generates a positive or negative impression. For instance, over-emphatic words such as “never” and “always” could give a negative impression that “the applicant is making an exaggeration which is seldom true”.
“Every recruiter and admissions officer will have to assess hundreds if not thousands of personal statements from hopeful applicants and will make their decisions based on what they can see on paper. “Choosing the right words is therefore vitally important if your application is to stand out from the rest,” says Karen Pine, a psychologist at the University of Hertfordshire.
    32. What is the passage mainly talking about?
A.What a job hunter should consider in his application.
    B. What a worker needs to keep in mind in the work place.
    C. What an interviewee should avoid in an interview.
    D. What an interviewer should pay attention to in a interview.
    33. According to the passage, which of the following words is NOT advised in an application letter?
    A. preference B. something C. problem D. lesson
    34. What does the underlined phrase “to push more positive buttons” mean?
    A. to push the buttons more positively.
    B. to choose the positive pole of the buttons to push.
    C. to evoke recruiters’ positive reaction.
    D. to choose the appreciative expressions.
    35. Why should the word “always” be avoided in applying for a job?
    A. It’s not eye-catching enough.
    B. It may be sort of misleading.
    C. It is among over- emphatic words.
    D. It can’t impress the recruiter.

How can you show your personality without saying a word? You can let your fashion do the talking, and your sneakers(球鞋) do the walking.
36 At that time, basketball became more popular in the US and abroad. So clothing brands began to tie their sneakers to basketball stars. Even today, we see LeBron James sporting the latest shoes in TV ads.
Today, basketball sneakers are not only for athletes. 37 [Z-x-x-k.]
Sneakers encourage kids’ creativity. 38 They are given blank, white shoes – like an artist’s canvas (画布). Then it is up to students to create their own sneaker artwork using pens and paint.
In Britain, most students have to wear uniform, including black shoes. So once they get on the sports field, they can wear running shoes, or soccer boots. They can also design their own sports shoes online before buying them, including color, design and patterns (图案).
39 They collect them, too. Big collections include Nike Air Jordans, named after famous basketball star Michael Jordan. 40 They’re called a “sneakerhead”. Do you know any sneakerheads?
    A. They’re also a hit with young people.
    B. But sneakers are popular with both boys and girls.
    C. The sneaker culture we live in today started in the 1980s.
    D. How would you like to design your own sneakers?
    E. People who collect sneakers have even given themselves a name for themselves.
    F. Students can now take part in design-your-own-sneakers petitions.
    G. Sneakers in the US mean more than simply wearing them for school or sports.

My Approaches to Difficulties in Learning
As high school students, we run into one difficulty after another in the process of learning. Everyone has their own ways to deal with them. Here I would like to share mine.
When I am confronted with a difficulty, which is quite mon, I tend to choose to consult relevant learning materials or web pages. In this way, I can not only figure it out but also improve my ability to overe problems all by myself.  However, when it is something beyond my petence, I will turn to classmates or teachers for help. Sometimes I also ask my parents for advice. As a result, I have made steady progress in my study.
All in all, approaches to solving problems vary from person to person. I’m convinced that the most suitable ones are the best.

    录音原文
    Text 1
M: Do you like this painting I bought? I want to put it in the front hallway.
W: I like it, but I think it might look better in the kitchen or the living room.
    Text 2
    W: Do you recycle, Aron?
M: Yeah, I do. I recycle everything! I recycle glass, paper, and plastic. How about you?
    W: I only recycle glass.
    Text 3
W: What is your favorite type of movie? Personally, I like dramas.
M: I prefer edies, but sometimes I like action films. I used to think romance films were terrible, but I don’t mind so much anymore.
    Text 4
M: I’m going shopping and then to the movies on Saturday. Would you like to e?
W: No, thanks. I’m going to the beach. It’s supposed to be hot, so I don’t want to be indoors.
    Text 5
M: I went to an eye doctor yesterday, and he told me that I’m colorblind.
    W: What does that mean?
M: I can’t tell the differences between colors. It’s even worse from far away. Black and white is fine, though.
    Text 6
W: How long did it take you to write your novel?
    M: Around three years.
W: Wow, that’s a long time! Where do you usually write?
M: I write in cafés a lot. Sometimes I write at home, or in libraries.
W: Do you have a favorite spot?
M: Cafés are always nice because I can order coffee, and I like being around people. Writing from home gets lonely sometimes, but my preference mostly depends on my mood.
    Text 7
M: I had the worst day today!
    W: Why, what happened?
M: I was late for school because I got into a car accident. It wasn’t even my fault. Then I spilled soup all over my foot at lunch and everyone laughed at me. No one picked me to be on their team at soccer practice after school. Then on my way home, I almost hit a dog that was in the road.
W: Wow, that does sound horrible. I made your favorite meal for dinner tonight. Maybe that will cheer you up.
M: Oh, thank you! Steak and French fries are exactly what I wanted! Let’s watch the basketball game after the meal.
    Text 8
W: Where do you see yourself in ten years?
M: In ten years? I will have graduated college by then, and hopefully, I’ll be living in a big city, maybe New York. I want to be a doctor so I can help people. What about you?
W: I’ve always wanted to live in Italy, so I definitely see myself there. Maybe Rome! Or Venice. Florence seems nice, too.
M: What will your job be?
W: I think I’d like to be a pilot and fly people around the world.
M: That sounds fun. I thought you always wanted to be a lawyer, though.
W: I used to, but that was last year. Now, I want to learn how to fly a plane.
M: Do you think we’ll still be friends in ten years?
W: Of course! I’ll visit you in New York and you can visit me in Rome!
    Text 9
    M: Hi, Sara.
W: Hey, Jimmy. What’s up? I never thought you’d be home on a Saturday night!
M: I’m just calling to tell you that I won’t be able to make it to your party tomorrow. My dog died today.
W: Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that! What happened?
M: I’m not exactly sure. I came home from work tonight and she wasn’t moving. I took her to the hospital and they said her heart had stopped.
W: That’s awful. Don’t worry about ing to the party. I pletely understand.
M: Thanks. She was 15 years old, so at least she had a good, long life. I think she simply died of old age. I just need a few days to myself, but I should be feeling back to normal pretty soon.
W: Of course. If there’s anything you need, just give me a call. I can make you some food, or e spend some time with you if you want me to.
M: Thanks. You’re a good friend. Have fun at the party. I’ll talk to you soon.
    Text 10
W: Hello, this is Charlotte Franklin calling from Dr. Carrie Smith’s office. I have a message for Hillary Brown. I’m calling to inform you that Dr. Smith has reviewed your tests, and it looks like you are allergic to the sun. This may be a surprise to you, but it is more mon than you might think. Please call us to make an appointment to speak directly with Dr. Smith. In the meantime, try and stay out of the sun as much as possible. If you do go out, wear clothing that will block out as much sun as possible. And definitely put on sun cream. Try not to do many outdoor activities, and if you are driving, please wear sunglasses. Regular pain medicine is often enough to treat a bad sunburn for most of us. But if you get one, please go straight to the emergency room for treatment. This is not a joke. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water. Please call us as soon as possible to make an appointment. Thank you.
