My grandparents are in the middle of a month-long visit with my family. This means they are staying in my bedroom while I share my sister Indi’s room.
“Isn’t it fun that we get to be roommates?” said Indi excitedly.
However, things didn’t turn out that way. It was time to sleep. I intended to turn off the big light and could just use my mini booklight to read.
“Wait!” said Indi. “I can’t fall asleep with any light on and without listening to The Adventure of Jeremy Owl.” “I don’t want to listen to anything,” I said.“I want to read.” “I promise you’ll change your mind when you hear it. Jeremy has an upside-down party, and you’ll never guess what happens.”Indi pressed the play button on her CD player.
I had no way but to tolerate(忍受)it. That night, between the fan, Jeremy Owl’s upside-down adventures, and Indi’s surprisingly loud snoring(鼾声), I had an extremely hard time concentrating on my book—and an even harder time falling asleep.
Sharing a room doesn’t get any easier during the day. My things kept getting mixed up, covered and lost.
That night, we had a family meeting to come up with some solutions.“How about we just move to a big house with lots of bedrooms?” my little brother, Tex, suggested. “It could have a swimming pool and a basketball court.” “If we had a few million dollars lying around, that would be a fantastic idea,” said my dad, laughing.
But how could we solve our problem? Dad said we both need to be considerate of others and show each other mutual(互相的)respect. No mini booklight. No bedtime stories. And nobody is allowed to touch the other person’s things.
Finally, we both get some privacy and we become happy roommates.
24. Why does the author have to share a room with Indi?
A. To have some fun. B. To strengthen their ties.
C. To make room for her grandparents. D. To have her own room painted.
25. How does the author feel about Indi’s playing the bedtime story?
A. Unhappy but supportive. B. Unfavorable but tolerant.
C. Understanding and appreciative. D. Annoyed and dissatisfied.
26. How did the father respond to Tex?
A. Sadly. B. Humorously. C. Doubtfully. D. Seriously.
27. What does the author aim to stress through her experience?
A. It’s hard to maintain family ties.
B. Great things may be done by mass efforts.
C. Putting yourself in others’ shoes is important.
D. Teaching by example is better than teaching by words.
C
These days more and more people tend to buy man-made trees for Christmas, because they think they are good for the environment. But is it true? Which is more environmentally friendly—real or man-made? The simple answer is: it depends.
Real trees that still have their roots have little carbon footprint(碳足迹). They can be planted, brought inside for the Christmas period and then replanted.
But things are more complex for other trees.
Britain’s Carbon Trust estimate(估计)that a two-meter tall tree that doesn’t have roots has a carbon footprint of between 3. 5 kg CO2e and 16 kg CO2e depending on whether it is burnt—which is less polluting—or finds its way to a landfill(垃圾填埋场).“Unfortunately, we still see a lot of trees going into landfill,” says Sophie Neuberg, a member of Friends of the Earth. “And that’s very bad for the environment because they break down very slowly and create methane which is a greenhouse gas.”
The picture for plastic trees isn’t so encouraging. The Carbon Trust estimate a carbon footprint of around 40 kg CO2e for a two-meter tree, but its beauty is that it can be reused.
“It’s a good idea to get a good quality one that you can use for many years. Someone I know has had their plastic tree for 20 years,” Neuberg says.
This tendency toward reuse of plastic trees is supported by research published by the American Christmas Tree Association(ACTA)who estimate that 85% of US families with a man-made tree will reuse it and that on average man-made trees are reused for 11 years.
Jami Warner, director of ACTA repeats Neuberg’s advice. “Quality man-made trees are very easy to break down and very easy to store,” Warner says. “If you take good care of it you can use it season after season or you can donate it to a good organisation.”
However, if you want a truly green Christmas, you can simply replace the tree with the plants already in your house and decorate them for Christmas.
28. Why do people tend to buy man-made Christmas trees now?
A. They think it costs less.
B. They find it more convenient.
C. They consider it more decorative.
D. They believe it is more eco-friendly.
29. What is the worst way to deal with a used real tree?
A. Burning it. B. Reusing it. C. Throwing it. D. Replanting it.
30. Which of the following may Jami Warner agree with?
A. Buying a good quality plastic tree.
B. Planting a tree in a po t and reusing it.
C. Using plants to replace Christmas trees.
D. Ignoring the tradition and canceling the tree.
31. In which section of a website can you find the text?
A. Business. B. Education. C. Health. D. Environment.

Dogs can smell the difference between odors(气味)from humans when they’re stressed and when they’re calm, according to a study published Wednesday.
Researchers first collected breath and sweat samples(样本)from study participants(参与者)to use as a baseline. Afterward, these people performed a task, counting backward from 9,000 in units of 17 in front of two researchers for three minutes.“If the participant gave a correct answer, they were given no feedback and were expected to continue, and if they gave an incorrect answer the researcher would stop them with ‘no’ and tell them their last correct answer,” said lead study author Clara Wilson.
The study team collected another round of breath and sweat samples after the task was completed. Additionally, the researchers collected reported stress levels, heart rate and blood pressure before and after the task. Thirty-six participants who reported feeling stressed and had increased heart rate and blood pressure had their samples shown to the dogs.
The researchers presented post-task breath and sweat samples from one person to 20 dogs along with two other blank control samples. The dogs needed to choose the correct sample at least seven out of 10 times to move onto the next stage.
In the second and final stage, the study team showed the four dogs that passed stage one the same samples they smelt in stage one along with a sample from the same individual collected before the task and a blank.
The dogs chose the right sample in 93.8% of the tests, which suggested that the stress odors were quite different. “It was fascinating to see how able the dogs were at discriminating between these odors when the only difference was that a mental stress response had occurred,” she said.
More experimentation needs to be done outside of a lab to see how applicable the results of this study are in the real world, Wilson said. These findings also open the door to future research to study if dogs can recognize different emotions, plus how long the dogs are sensible to the odors, she said.
32. Why are participants asked to count numbers?
A. To build up their hearts. B. To stress them out mentally.
C. To exercise their breathing. D. To test their academic performance.
33. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “discriminating” in paragraph 6?
A. Telling apart. B. Testing out. C. Drying out. D. Cleaning up.
34. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about regarding the study?
A. Expectations for the future research.
B. Supporting evidence for the research results.
C. A further explanation of the research methods.
D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Dogs Can Sense People’s Fear
B. Researchers Found Dogs Can Count
C. Dogs Can Smell When Humans Are Stressed
D. New Evidence of Dog Intelligence Was Found

Christmas was approaching, and I had absolutely no idea what to get for my wife. As usual, I had left my holiday shopping until the last minute. I always had the feeling that the perfect gift would somehow appear at the right time, although this didn’t always happen. This year I didn’t have any good ideas.
We had just moved to Italy. Donna was away attending a conference, so I had the rest of the week to work on the house and figure out what to get her as a Christmas gift before she got back.
My house companion(伴侣)while Donna was away was her cat, Princess. I was keeping Princess indoors in our new home until she became familiar with the place and then planned to slowly introduce her to the great outdoors.
However, one day as I was bringing in some groceries, to my shock and horror I suddenly found she was gone. Donna would be back in a few days and it would ruin Christmas for both of us if Princess was not back by then, safe and sound. Donna had already excitedly told me over the phone that she had found several fun toys and delicious snacks for Princess as Christmas gifts. She couldn’t wait to get back and wrap them up.
I was in big trouble. I had to find Princess—and fast. So, I made a poster with her description and a hurried sketch(素描)of the cat that I personally drew because I couldn’t find a photo of her anywhere. I was sure my wife had hundreds on her phone, but I didn’t dare ask her for one. I didn’t want her to know that her precious cat had escaped.
Donna’s happy daily calls continued, as did my daily searches for Princess. I still hadn’t mentioned anything about the disappearance to my wife. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. It would destroy her.
Finally, the day came for my wife to return.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
I picked up Donna at the Venice airport but still didn’t have the courage to tell her what had happened. ________

根据文章第一段第二句“This means they are staying in my bedroom while I share my sister Indi’s room.”
根据文章第四段作者对Indi的回复“I don’t want to listen to anything,”以及第五段“I had no way but to tolerate(忍受)it. That night, between the fan...”
根据文章倒数第三段中的“‘If we had a few million dollars lying around, that would be a fantastic idea,’ said my dad, laughing.”
根据文章第四至六段可知,作者和妹妹一开始相处得并不融洽;根据倒数第二段中父亲的话“Dad said we both need to be considerate of others and show each other ... the other person’s things.”

根据文章第一段“These days more and more people tend to buy man-made trees for Christmas, because they think they are good for the environment.”
而对于没有根部的真树,根据第四段中“…between 3.5 kg CO2e and 16 kg CO2edepending on whether it is burnt—which is less polluting—or finds its way to a landfill(垃圾填埋场)”可知,将用过的无根树废弃扔掉比燃烧处理会产生更多污染。
文中第六段Neuberg提到塑料树说到“It’s a good idea to get a good quality one that you can use for many years.”而Jami Warner对其提出的建议进行了复述“Quality man-made trees are very easy to break down and very easy to store,”,认为质量好的塑料树易分解和保存,而且又说到“If you take good care of it you can use it season after season or you can donate it to a good organisation.” 故选A。
而第二段中对这类研究的样本收集过程进行了介绍:“first collected breath and sweat samples(样本)from study participants(参与者)to use as a baseline. Afterward, these people performed a task…”
文章主要介绍了犬类能分辨人类在有无压力下的气味差别,且根据discriminating前的“how able the dogs were at”以及下文的“between these odors when the only difference was that a mental stress response had occurred”可知,此处discriminating意为“分辨”。故选A。
故选A。
且根据设空处前一句“Ever walk around the parking lot because you can’t find your car?(你是不是曾经因为找不到你的车而在停车场来回转悠?)” 故选A。
40.E根据设空处后的句子“That might mean placing a basket …”以及“Then, at the end of the day, ‘look through the areas where you’ve been, find the items that need to be taken back home, and return them to their spots,”可知,这两句都是在解释 E 项中的“make a ‘home for everything’”。

且由第43空后面的“… he chose to head back over the bridge. Something about that woman didn’t seem …” circle (圆圈), highway(公路), breath(呼吸)均不符合语境。故选A。
44.D根据下文“Why would she be fishing this late?” formal(正式的), special (特别的),serious(严重的)均不符合语境。故选D。
45.C根据空前的“As he crossed the bridge, Conrad saw the woman standing in the same spot.” pulled a U-turn意为“掉头”。
46.B上文提到Conrad掉头停车,打开闪光灯,阻断一条车道,且根据设空处所在的句子“In case there was trouble, he hoped another driver would 46 and help.” make sense(有道理), pick out(挑出),catch up(追上)均不符合语境。故选B。
47.A根据上文“He stepped out of his car and got a clearer...” video(录像),example(例子), signal(信号)均不符合语境。故选A。
48.C下文“life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped(生活并不如她所愿)”是对上文“She kept silent, but he kept probing(追根究底), eventually pulling from her that she was jobless, not doing well in school”的总结性语言,由此可知,设空处应用表示总结的短语“总而言之(in short)”。in turn(反过来), in advance(提前), in addition (除此之外)均不符合语境。
ins and outs(详情), do’s and don’ts(行为准则), right and wrong(是非)均不符合语境。
jumped(跳), backed(倒退), remained(保持不变)均不符合语境。故选D。
51.B根据设空处后面句子“without warning, she climbed onto the railing, saying, ‘I’m not worth it.’”

55.C根据“The two officers took hold of the woman... (两名警察握住了那名女子)”可知,女子获救了(saved)。promoted(晋升), appreciated (欣赏),noticed(注意到)均不符合语境。

Dear George,
Recently, I paid a visit to the National Art Museum of China, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
There are so many artworks in the gallery. But I was deeply impressed by the painting Father by Luo Zhongli. It shows the image of a father, who is to drink the water from the bowl which he is holding with his rough hands. Obviously, the man is going through hardships but he is still wearing a smile. I was struck by the contrast of the hardships and optimism shown in the painting.
Is there any artwork that has left you a deep impression? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
I picked up Donna at the Venice airport but still didn’t have the courage to tell her what had happened. I had held back the news for so long that it would now be even more terrible for her to find out. She excitedly showed me the fun toys and delicious snacks she had found for Princess as we drove home, while I silently thought of a way to break the news to her. She just couldn’t wait to see her baby, and let her try the new toys and taste the snacks. I decided to be honest after we got home and settled.
Just as I was about to break the bad news about Princess’s disappearing, guess who appeared walking up the driveway?“Oh, my goodness, you spent the time showing her around the area and teaching her to stay outside on her own. I knew you two would get along well while I was gone. That’s a fantastic Christmas gift,” my wife said excitedly as she kissed me on the cheek before hurrying to put Princess into her arms. Seeing the satisfied look on my wife’s face, I finally let out a huge sigh of relief. So, that’s how I managed to give my wife the best Christmas gift, again at the last minute.

Stephanie said that she has faced a great many threats while doing her job, which makes her work very difficult. But she is also happy that she has received a lot of support.
Stephanie was awarded $ 10,000. She said she will put the money in the projects that EVE operates. Part of it will be used to build up leadership programs and educate more women in South Sudan about their rights. She also noted that she and the organization have always had a strong desire to support young children. The money will thus be useful for helping kids who have lost their parents or homes.
