Section Ⅰ Reading and Thinking (1)

    A
What is great art? On the one hand, we can all see that great art is old art which is considered great. But how do we know which art of our own times is great, and which will be forgotten? And who decides?
These are important questions, for the great art of the past often was not considered great during its own time. When Shakespeare and Charles Dickens were writing, for example, most critics considered them mediocre (平庸的) writers with little or no literary ability.
Similarly, Van Gogh and many of the other Impressionist painters of the late nineteenth century were not allowed to participate in events involving what were thought to be the “real” painters of the time, and often they were very poor. Yet today their paintings often sell for millions of dollars, while those so-called “real” painters are now barely remembered.
So what makes great art? Can, for example, rock music be great art? Music videos? Cartoons and comics? Those who called themselves critics of the fine arts often were the last to recognise great art in the past, and we can probably expect this to be the situation today.
Critics often don’t see great art for what it is because they tend to be prejudiced against what is popular, as Shakespeare and Dickens were in their day. Popular works, whether novels, movies, or comics, are usually considered to be produced for the sake of money only, and not for the sake of art.
But popularity, it seems to me, is one of three signs that a present-day work of art may come to be thought of as great. The other two are that it is groundbreaking, and that it is inherently(内在地) beautiful.
Many works have one or even two of these qualities of being popular, unusual, or beautiful. Having all three often will mean that a work of art will someday be seen to be great, though it may take a good spoonful of time, such as a century or two, to know for sure.
    1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
    A. To lead to the following, and arouse the readers’ curiosity.
    B. To introduce some real painters.
    C. To introduce how to appreciate great works.
    D. To explain what kind of art becomes popular.
故选A。
    答案:A
    2. What does the author want to prove through the examples of Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and Van Gogh?
    A. These masters’ works have some shortcomings.
    B. These masters would never have been so successful without the critics of their times.
    C. Truly beautiful works of art are never understood by the critics.
    D. Great masters were often not acknowledged while they were alive.
    3. What can we learn according to the author?
    A. Great works may be presented in different forms.
    B. The Impressionist painters were not accepted for their poor paintings.
    C. Paintings are thought to be valuable because of their popularity.
    D. Critics nowadays change their attitudes to the great works.
故选A。
    答案:A
    4. What may happen to great works of art from this text?
    A. They lose value if they’re not accepted.
    B. They are produced not for money.
    C. They may be neglected for a long time.
    D. They are presented in an impressive way.
    B
Street art is a very popular form of art that is spreading quickly all over the world. You can find it on buildings, sidewalks, street signs and trash cans from Tokyo to Paris, from Moscow to Cape Town. Street art has become a global culture and even art museums and galleries are collecting the works of street artists.
Street art started out very secretly because it was illegal to paint on public and private property without permission. People often have different opinions about street art. Some think it is a crime and others think it is a very beautiful new form of culture.
Art experts claim that the street art movement began in New York in the 1960s. Young adults painted words and other images on walls and trains. This colourful style of writing became known as graffiti. Graffiti art showed that young people wanted to rebel against society. They travelled around cities to create paintings that everyone could see. In many cases, they had trouble with the police and the local government.
Street artists do their work for different reasons. Some of them do not like artists who make so much money in galleries and museums. They choose street art because it is closer to the people. Some artists try to express their political opinions in their work. They often want to protest against big firms and corporations. Others like to do things that are forbidden and hope they don’t get caught. Advertising companies also use street art in their ads because it gives people the impression of youth and energy.
Today, the Internet has a big influence on street art. Artists can show their pictures to audience all over the world. Many city residents, however, say that seeing a picture on the Internet is never as good as seeing it alive. The street art movement lives with the energy and life of a big city. There, it will continue to change and grow.
    5. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
    A. Street art has a long history.
    B. Street art is a new form of culture.
    C. Street art can be found in art museums.
    D. Street art is popular around the world.
    6. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
    A. Graffiti artists often had trouble with the police and the local government in the 1960s.
    B. Most art experts think painting on walls and trains is a crime.
    C. Street art started out secretly because few people liked it.
    D. It is illegal for street artists to travel around big cities.
根据第三段最后一句“In many cases, they had trouble with the police and the local government.” 故选A。
    答案:A
    7. Why do some advertising companies use street art in their ads?
    A. It is the fastest way to introduce a new product.
    B. It impresses people with youth and energy.
    C. It helps them save much money.
    D. It is closer to the people.
根据第四段最后一句“Advertising companies also use street art in their ads because it gives people the impression of youth and energy.”
    8. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Street artists will show their pictures on the Internet instead of in the street.
    B. Street art will move from big cities to small cities and the countryside.
    C. More city residents will become street artists.
    D. Street art won’t be replaced by the Internet.
根据最后一段中的“... however, say that seeing a picture on the Internet is never as good as seeing it alive ... it will continue to change and grow.”
    C
When you think about art, you might consider it to be permanent. After all, that picture you drew in kindergarten might still hang on your refrigerator years later. 9.________ Think about a Broadway performance. When it’s over, it’s over. Sure, it might live in your memory. But the live show is a special event. It is limited to a certain time and place.
Can you think of other forms of art that are temporary? If you’re a fan of the beach, sandcastles might come to your mind. Have you ever spent hours building a beautiful sandcastle? 10.________ You knew your work of art would be gone as soon as the tide came in. The sandy beach is a canvas where nature erases “paintings” daily.
Most of the time, art made from sand can’t last long. Still, many people love using sand to create their own unique vision of beauty. One of the most attractive types of sand art is sand animation. 11.________ Artists who work in sand animation use sand to make a set of images that usually tell a story. They often start with a large amount of sand on a flat surface, such as a table. They then use their hands and fingers to draw in the sand.
12.________However, the wide variety of beautiful and highly-detailed sand artworks might surprise you. Many of these works or art are temporary. That’s where the animation part comes in.
Sand animation artists create a series of images that move to tell a story. They might also use music and special lighting to complete the effect. Sometimes they photograph or video their creation throughout the process. 13.________

    A. It is a type of live performance art.
    B. Not all works of art are permanent, though.
    C. Sand animation is beautiful but lasts only for the moment.
    D. Then, they turn it into a sand animation movie when it’s finished.
    E. It might seem like using sand would limit the art you could make.
    F. If you have, you would probably be sad when it was time to leave the beach.
    G. Building a sand castle is a family-friendly activity perfect for large groups.
    9. 解析:根据前文“When you think about art, you might consider it to be permanent.” When it’s over, it’s over.”
    10. 解析:前文“Have you ever spent hours building a beautiful sandcastle?”对应选项F中的“If you have”,后文“You knew your work of art would be gone as soon as the tide came in”对应选项F中的“you would probably be sad when it was time to leave the beach”。故选F。
    答案:F
    11. 解析:根据前文“One of the most attractive types of sand art is sand animation.”可知,选项A中的It是指沙画,根据后文“Artists who work in sand animation use sand to make a set of images that usually tell a story.” 故选A。
    答案:A
    12. 解析:根据“However, the wide variety of beautiful and highly-detailed sand artworks might surprise you.”可知,沙子艺术品并不会限制艺术创作,和选项E(似乎使用沙子会限制你的艺术创作)构成转折。故选E。
    答案:E
    13. 解析:根据前文“Sometimes they photograph or video their creation throughout the process.”

No artist has affected Modern Art more than Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Thousands of masterpieces he had created changed the way people thought about art. Picasso was perhaps the most talented and successful artist who ever lived.
Picasso was born in 1881 in a small town on the southern coast of Spain. His father was a painter who taught art. Picasso showed exceptional talent at an early age and, by the time he was in his teens, painted better than his father or any of the local art teachers. At sixteen, Picasso was sent to the Royal Academy of Madrid, where students drew from plaster casts and copied works of the old masters. Picasso felt these assignments were pointless and began to work on his own. Picasso’s father soon became angry with his son’s rebellious behaviour, long hair, and strange clothes. He believed that Picasso was wasting his talent and scolded him, “Why don’t you cut your hair and paint sensibly?”
In 1900, Picasso left for Paris—then the centre of the art world. He lived in a cold,run-down building, painting constantly, sometimes surviving for days on only a piece of bread. During these years, his art reflected his dismal(凄凉的) surroundings. Homeless outcasts were the subject of many of his fairly realistic early paintings. After seeing African masks and sculptures, his works became more simplified and angular(有棱角的) leading up to the revolutionary new style known as Cubism.
Picasso didn’t sell many of his works during these early years. But he worked continuously, always experimenting with different styles of painting. Though Picasso lived to be ninety-two and became the most famous artist in the world, he spoke of his youthful days in Paris as “the happiest time of my life”.

For a few years I was 4 with the opportunity to teach disabled students. One of my most 5 students was a five-year-old girl called Vanessa, who had difficulty walking, and could not speak. We 6 sat on the floor for our music lessons and Vanessa liked to sit on my lap(大腿). One of her favourite songs was John the Rabbit. It was a call-and-response song where I sang the call and the students 7 twice while singing the repeating phrase “Oh, yes!” Vanessa liked to 8 her hands together with mine and clap with me. We probably performed that song during every class, Vanessa and I clapping together. But she 9 said or sang a word.
One day, when the song was finished, Vanessa turned around, looked me in the eye, clapped her tiny hands twice and said the words “Oh, yes!” I opened my mouth in 10 and for that moment I was the one who could not speak. When my heart finally started beating again, I looked over at the assistant teacher to find her also 11 . Through music, we had made an awesome connection.
