As the daughter of immigrants, Chanthaphone’s primary language at home was Lao. At 5, she learned to speak English. But she didn’t know how to read and write - let alone how to fit in at school or communicate with classmates. Mrs. Lewis, Chanthaphone’s second-grade teacher, changed everything. She taught her students that it was OK if they did not know English and it was all right for them to use words in their home language to explain how they were feeling or thinking. Chanthaphone got more and more confidence and wanted to do what her teacher did in the future.
Now, at 26, Chanthaphone is an English teacher at Fort Worth ISDs William Monnig Middle School. Like Mrs Lewis, Chanthaphone aims to help her non-English-speaking students to gain the confidence they need to fulfill their potential in life.
At the beginning of each school year, Chanthaphone recounts her story to her new classes She tells them she knows what it feels like not to want to participate in class or raise her hand. She reminds them that she once sat in their seat and felt different because of her upbringing. But she stresses that’s what makes each of them special.
Her students, though, are usually unconvinced. She has to take out photos of her graduating college and tell them about her parents and what her school was like. Then it finally clicks.
In the classroom, Chanthaphone allows students to communicate in whichever way they feel most comfortable. For some, it may be raising their hand and voicing their thoughts. For others, it may be writing their thoughts on a piece of paper and handing it to Chanthaphone.
However, Chanthaphone does encourage her students to go out of their comfort zone. She wants them to work with students they don’t know because teamwork and collaboration with unfamiliar people is important.
“I’ve always wanted to be the teacher who supported students and advocated for them in and outside of classroom,” Chanthaphone said. “When I get notes or see Facebook posts from parents talking about previous teachers, including me, I feel like my goal has been completed.”
4.What do you know about Mrs. Lewis?
A.She is ambitious B.She is inspiring.
C.She is knowledgeable. D.She is demanding.
5.Why does Chanthaphone tell her schooling experience to her new students?
A.To make a good beginning of her class. B.To make herself well known to her students.
C.To encourage her students to be confident. D.To push the students to voice their thoughts.
6.What does Chanthaphone focus on in the classroom?
A.Students’ strong curiosity. B.Students’ mental health.
C.Students’ unique talent. D.Students’ communicating ability.
7.What can be the best title for the text?
A.I was once like you B.You are the only one
C.No one can say no to you D.Everything can be possible

A new app promises to help Barcelona residents find the shadiest route between two places to avoid extreme heat. Cool Walks, a routing tool for people first developed at a data visualization contest, aims to show users a variety of walking routs to take for their intended destinations.
Users can choose the most direct route, a shady route that may take a little longer, or they can set the app to a special mode, which avoids direct sunlight at all costs. Users can also use the app to find drinking fountains, or places to shelter from the sun.
The app uses a tool called Lidar to create high-resolution models of ground, accurate to within 10 cm. This information is combined with data on the sun’s path to work out where is in shade at any given time of day.
Barcelona is looking to use green spaces and trees as part of its efforts to mitigate the effects of global heating. The city’s 20-year tree master plan aims to increase the proportion (比例) of land covered by trees from 25%to 30%. Although the tool only maps one neighborhood of Barcelona, it is hoped the research will provide information on how the city can adapt to extreme heat to protect its citizens and economy.
Heatwaves kill more people than any other climate risk. According to C40, a climate leadership group made up of 97 cities around the world, extreme heat events in cities can cause death increase of up to 14%, as well as lower workforce productivity and damage infrastructure (基础设施) such as roads and rail lines.
Jon Burke, a former consultant for Hackney in London, who was responsible for a massive expansion of tree planting in the district, said: “I think we should view this particular kind of app as a temporary measure to reduce the impacts of extreme heat… while cities rapidly invest in urban canopy (树冠层) cover and broader green infrastructure.”
8.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The designer of the app. B.The function of the app.
C.The potential users of the app. D.The working principle of the app.
9.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A.relieve B.feel C.consider D.predict
10.What is the purpose of Paragraph 5?
A.To stress the importance of road construction.
B.To raise awareness of protecting the environment.
C.To indicate the background for designing the app.
D.To give warnings of more upcoming disasters.
11.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Jon Burke has a great sense of duty.
B.The district needs to be expanded.
C.Investment in tree planting is a wise choice.
D.The app is powerful enough to cope with heatwaves.

On January 7, David Bennett went into the operating room at the University of Maryland Medical Center for a surgical procedure never performed before on a human. The 57-year-old Maryland resident had been hospitalized for months due to a life threatening disease. His heart was failing him and he needed a new one.
Bennett’s condition left him unresponsive to treatment and ineligible (不合格) for the transplant list or an artificial heart pump. The physician-scientists at the center, however, had another-also risky- option: transplant (移植) a heart from a genetically-modified pig.
“It was either die or do this transplant,” Bennett had told surgeons a day before the operation. “I want to live. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but it’s also my last choice.”
It took the medical team eight hours to finish the operation, making Bennett the first human to successfully receive a pig’s heart. “It’s working and it looks normal. We are thrilled, but we don’t know what tomorrow will bring us. This has never been done before,” Barkley Griffith, who led the transplant team, told the New York Times.
While it’s only been five days since the operation, the surgeons say that Bennett’s new pig heart was, so far, functioning as expected and his body wasn’t rejecting (排斥) the organ. They are still monitoring his condition closely.
“I think it’s extremely exciting,” says Robert Montgomery, transplant surgeon and director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, who was not involved in Bennett’s operation. The result of the procedure was also personally meaningful for Montgomery, who received a heart transplant in 2018 due to a genetic disease that may also affect members of his family in the future. “It’s still in the early days, but still the heart seems to be functioning. And that in and of itself is an extraordinary thing. Up to now most experimental heart transplant procedures have been done between pigs and other animals. This is the first time that surgeons have taken it into a living human.”
12.What do the words “a shot in the dark” underlined in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A.Something that costs a fortune.
    B.Something impossible to succeed.
    C.Something drawing public attention.
    D.Something with an uncertain outcome.
    13.What is Barkley Griffith’s attitude to Bennett’s post-operation condition?
    A.Negative.
    B.Cautious.
    C.Optimistic.
    D.Uncaring.
14.What is the text mainly about?
A.The heated debate over the pig heart transplant.
B.David Bennett’s contribution to medical research.
C.The first experimental pig heart transplant in the world.
D.The first successful pig heart transplant into a living human.
15.In which section of a magazine may this text appear?
    A.Political Affairs.
    B.Global Entertainment.
    C.Sci-Tech Front.
    D.Financial Window.

    ●Get up earlier

●Have a good stretch in bed
Before you even open your eyes, stretch every extremity(四肢) for 15 seconds. By doing this, you will enhance the flow of blood through your system, providing your tissues with extra oxygen.
    18

    ●Consult your morning calendar
Hang a large whiteboard in your kitchen. On it, write down all you need to know for that particular day, from doctor appointments to what you’re doing with your friends. Check it carefully while you sip your first cup of coffee or tea. 19

    52.How to manage our time
Managing our time means give a proper schedule to our time, which is essential to our life and ensures the efficiency of our work, for the reason that sometimes delay may get you into big trouble.
I think there are a variety of ways to manage our time. Firstly, we should set some achievable goals. Make sure these goals are sensible, motivating, attainable and realistic. For example, we will have completed the necessary training courses and gain the target scores within 2 years’ time. Secondly, we can make effective scheduling. This means using our pen and paper to write down a weekly plan. For example, establish the time we want to make available for our practice. Thirdly, energize ourselves. Sometimes our energy levels may be low. When this happens we can find various solutions, such as taking a nap, doing exercise, or eating some vitamin and so on.
All in all, it’s high time that attention should be focused on our time management.
【导语】本文书面表达为开放作文。学校校报正在举办英语版面的征文活动,要求考生以“ How to manage our time”为题写一篇文章,陈述时间管理的意义和具体实施方法。
