In groups of four, make a conversation between the three ghosts and Scrooge about Christmas. Scrooge: Why do you visit me? Ghost A: Because you look so sad. I want to take you back to your childhood. Scrooge: I’m so happy as a child. Ghost B: Yes. Do you know other people how to spend Christmas? Everyone is happy, even the poor. Ghost C: Hey, I want to take you to the future. Scrooge: I’m dead, nobody cares. I know the spirit of Christmas. I decide to change my life and to be a better person. Step 2 Free talk Talk about your favorite festival, use the following questions. When is it celebrated in/on...? What do you like best about...? How do people celebrate...? Why do they do that? Step 3 Writing Work on 3a and 3b. Your English-speaking pen pal wants to know about your favorite Chinese festival. Make some notes about the festival.
Write a letter to your pen pal and tell him/her about your favorite Chinese festival. Use your notes in 3a. One possible version: Dear Sue, My favorite Chinese festival is the Spring Festival. It is celebrated on the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar. Before the festival, our houses have to be cleaned and we need to buy new clothes for a new year’s coming. On the eve, my family go to my grandparents’ home for a reunion dinner. Our family usually have jiaozi, niangao, fish and a great many dishes. On the first day of our New Year, people wear new clothes and visit relatives and friends. Children will receive red packets filled with “lucky” money. That’s one of my favorite parts of this festival. It’s my favorite festival because I enjoy spending time with my relatives. It makes me feel very happy and loved to be with my family!
