(2023秋·山东德州·高一统考期末)Is it likely that a person who originally has no language ability is cheerfully discussing the World Cup with you? The answer is yes.
In a paper published in Nature Communications on November 8, 2022, researchers have successfully changed the brain waves of an aphasic (失语症) paralyzed person into sentences, which are displayed on the computer screen and can “say” thousands of words, as is intended.
This participant is 30 years old. A decade ago he was aphasic due to stroke, his arms and legs unable to move. He depended on a pole pinned on the baseball cap to click the letters on the screen to communicate with people. It's quite inconvenient.
Last year researchers from the University of California used the latest technology to implant (植入) a device into the speech motor area of his brain and connect it with a neural (神经的) instrument to monitor brain wave patterns when he expressed different words. They used computer programs to build a language model with a vocabulary of 50 words for him. When he used these words to “speak” in his mind, his brain wave movement was turned into complete sentences and shown on the screen. For months the team recorded his neural activity when he “spoke”, used AI to identify various patterns and linked them to the words. Once a researcher asked on the screen, “Do you want some water?” And he answered, “No. I'm not thirsty.”
“The spelling speed of the device reaches 29.4 characters per minute. The character error rate is only 6.13%. The offline test results show it can be expanded to a large vocabulary containing 9000 words, maintaining a low character error rate-8.23%,” said Sean Metzger, the lead author of the paper. “Aphasic people like to use this device as it makes communication convenient. Anything is possible.”
More aphasic people are needed to participate in the test, which is still a long way from promotion. Experts warn although the study results are impressive, electrode implantation is risky.
1.What is the purpose of the research?
A.To assist aphasic patients to talk. B.To better people's communication.
C.To cure those incapable of speaking. D.To improve patients' language skills.
2.What does paragraph 4 focus on?
A.The practical application of the findings. B.A disadvantage of the language model.
C.The working process of the implanted device. D.A supporting evidence for the research results.
3.What can be inferred from Sean Metzger's words?
A.The device may have a promising future
B.The device can do anything for aphasic group.
C.Further research will centre on avoiding errors.
D.Further research will face many new challenges.
4.Which word best describes the author's attitude to the device?
    A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Indifferent. D.Objective.

(2023·安徽安庆·校联考模拟预测)Imagine sitting in your house, when suddenly you receive a phone call through your shirt. You answer the call and converse with the person on the other end. Sound crazy? This might soon be possible because of a new research from engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and their partners at Rhode Island School of Design.
These scientists have created a fabric that can hear sounds around you and inside your body. They published their research in the journal Nature. “Wearing such a shirt, you might talk through it to answer phone calls and communicate with others,” says lead author Wei Yan, a professor at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
To create the shirt, the team wove a flexible piezoelectric fiber (压电纤维) into fabric. Piezoelectric materials generate internal electrical charge from applied mechanical stress. When the fiber is exposed to sound waves, vibrations create electrical signals similar to how our ears work. The team wove the fibers in with a kind of traditional thread to create panels, which they then sewed into a shirt. They clapped at various angles away from the shirt, and found the fabric was able to detect the angle of the sound to within 1 degree at a distance of 3 meters away. They also tested whether clothes could act as a fabric stethoscope (听诊器) by sewing a single fiber into the inner part of a shirt, according to MIT. Yoel Fink, a co-author from MIT, says that this could be used in pregnant women’s clothes in the future.
The resulting fibers can pick up noises like human speech, birds singing, etc., and they can also make sounds louder, which could help those who are hard of hearing. This solution could also be used to help detect broken parts in buildings or be woven into a net to monitor fish, the researchers say.
According to Fink, their goal is to put other digital operations within fabric, including information storage and signal processing. “Computers are going to really become fabrics,” he says. “We’re getting very close.”
5.What can be the function of the fabric from the text?
A.It can read your mind. B.It can hear your heartbeat.
C.It can regulate your pulse. D.It can sense your feelings.
6.Why did the researchers clap at various angles away from the shirt?
A.To test how sensitive it is to surrounding sounds.
B.To figure out how effectively the panels function.
C.To make out if it is able to function as a stethoscope.
D.To test its ability to detect sound direction and distance.
7.What aspect of the fabric does the text focus on?
A.Its physical materials. B.Its possible applications.
C.Its potential problems. D.Its positive health benefits.
8.How do the researchers expect to deal with their fabric?
A.Make it available in the near future.
B.Use new-materials to make it durable.
C.Develop more digital operations within it.
D.Enable it to monitor users’ physical conditions.

(2023·上海黄浦·统考二模)ChatGPT became the hottest issue due to its ability to produce human-sounding essays, poetry, and screenplays on virtually any subject in seconds. Soon after ChatGPT was released, the potential for it to be misused to do things such as spread misinformation and write junk mails became apparent. Schools and educators also have warned of the potential for students to use it to write essays or other work they have been assigned. Last December, the software passed all three parts of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination as part of a research experiment.
So the startup, OpenAI behind the viral chatbot, revealed a tool for detecting text generated by artificial intelligence amid growing concerns the technology will be abused by cheaters, junk mail senders and others. OpenAI said that its so-called AI classifier was designed to help people distinguish between text written by a human versus a range of artificial intelligence programs—not just ChatGPT.
OpenAI said it had schools in mind when developing its latest classifier tool. “We recognize that identifying AI-written text has been an important point of discussion among educators, and equally important is recognizing the limits and impacts of AI-generated text classifiers in the classroom,” it said.
The classifier isn’t good enough on its own, though it can be used to go with methods that educators, employers and others rely on to determine the source of a piece of text. In evaluations, the new tool correctly identified 26% of AI-written text as “likely AI-written”, while it also had false positives 9% of the time in which it incorrectly labeled human-written text as AI-written. Another problem is that the tool can’t easily tell if a list of facts—U.S. state capitals for example—was written by a person or AI, because the correct answer would be the same. AI-written text can also be edited to escape the classifier.
“While it is impossible to reliably detect all AI-written text, classifiers like ours can be updated and re-trained based on successful attacks,” OpenAI said. “But it is unclear whether detection has an advantage in the long-term.”
9.ChatGPT’s passing the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam is mentioned to __________.
    A.account for its operating principles
    B.illustrate its complex structure
    C.emphasize its growing popularity
    D.warn against its potential danger
10.What’s the function of AI classifier?
A.Deepening the impact of AI writers.
B.Identifying the texts generated by AI.
C.Promoting the use of AI in classroom discussion.
D.Arousing educators’ awareness of AI-related technology.
11.What can be concluded from the evaluation of AI classifier?
    A.It is a work-in-progress.
B.It is good at storing factual information.
C.It can help a journalist to edit a text.
D.It is a reliable educational tool.
12.What does OpenAI think of AI classifier?
A.It will be reliable after continuous self-update and retraining.
B.Whether it can help educators in the long-term is out of question.
C.Whether it can solve the problems as intended remains a question.
D.It will succeed in detecting all human-written texts in the near future.

(2023春·湖北·高一校联考期中)Engineers from the University at Buffalo, Fudan University in China, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison have come together with funding from the National Science Foundation to produce an efficient and cost-effective device that purifies drinking water using the world’s most abundant power source-the sun.
More than 2, 300 years ago, the philosopher Aristotle described the water cycle. He has explained that water is heated by the sun, evaporates (蒸发) up into the air, condenses (凝结) into drops, and then falls back to the ground, pure and free of pollutants.
Professor Qiaoqiang Gan and the other engineers created a method of purifying water that builds upon Aristotle’s ancient observations. Gan’s team invented a solar water purifier that is a modern version of an evaporative solar still. This device looks like the roof of a tent, with strips of carbon-coated paper covering the top so that the paper strip hangs down on the sides. The ends of the paper strip dip into a water container at the bottom. Gradually, the water in the container is absorbed by the paper. When the black carbon coating on the paper is heated by the sun, the wet paper begins to dry. During evaporation, salt, dirt, bacteria, and other pollutants are trapped in the paper. As the temperature cools, water droplets begin to condense on the surface of the paper. The purified water is collected in a clean container and is ready to drink.
There are a few key advantages of the solar water purifier. First, the device is quick and efficient. The solar still can generate up to 5 gallons of clean water daily, which is enough to provide sufficient drinking water for a family. Furthermore, this solar water purifier is cheaper than other water-purification devices because it is made with inexpensive and widely available materials.
There are also disadvantages in terms of the adaptation to diverse environments on Earth and the building up of salt in the process. Currently, the engineers are working to make their purifier available worldwide. Soon, drinkable water will be purified and accessible where it is needed.
13.Why does the author mention Aristotle and the water cycle in the text?
A.To catch readers’ attention and interest.
B.To add more authority to the new invention.
C.To show the history of the solar water purifier.
D.To help illustrate the basic working principles of the invention
14.What is the main function of the carbon-coated paper?
A.To cover the top. B.To collect clean water.
C.To hang down on the sides. D.To absorb water and heat from the sun.
15.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A.What the researchers have done.
B.How the solar water purifier works.
C.What the solar water purifier can do.
D.How similar Aristotle’s observation is to the purifier.
16.What might the author think of the future of the solar water purifier?
    A.Dark. B.Uncertain. C.Promising. D.Unpredictable.
