If it feels like you are the one doing most of housework in your home, it may be time to share it with your children. Giving kids chores(家庭杂务) not only helps you relax, but also encourages teamwork and discipline. They get to understand they are playing an important role in the family.
“Most of the problems here come from the words we use. There’s a big difference between ‘doing chores’ and just ‘helping out’ around the house.” says Sarah Ockwell, author of Toddler Calm. “Chores are a normal part of everyday life and it is important that children learn to understand this as young as possible. Children need to understand that they are expected to do something for all parts of family life,” she adds.
Chores may make them consider the time you spend on keeping the home clean and tidy. They may be a little more thoughtful to care about your work, perhaps even putting their dirty clothes in the washing basket rather than just put them on their bedroom floor.
Children are pretty egocentric, and they only think about themselves a lot of the time. However, they also like to receive praise for their actions. So doing chores gives them the chance to be helpful and do something for others but not just for themselves.
It’s good for a child’s self-esteem to be given a task to do, even if it’s making their beds. Chores give a child confidence in their own abilities and teach them skills they’ll need in later life, like using the washing machine and cleaning the toilet.
“It also teaches them responsibility, and how to look after themselves,” says Liz who’s also the author of Toddler Calm. “These are important life skills, not least in how to not be a spoiled, selfish child!”
26. What does Sarah Ockwell mainly suggest?

“I was surprised at how I could get angry so easily with my parents before a big exam.” said Junior 3 student Wang Yangqian from Hefei. “ I couldn’t fall asleep even after I’d been in bed for two hours.”
Not only exams but also other things, like a big game, can make you different from how you are usually.
You may act differently because you are stressed out. Stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable about something. Usually your hands get wet and your heart beats faster. But being stressed is not always a big problem. Everybody, even sports stars, can get a little worried before a big game.
Some kinds of stress are good. Good stress might show up when you’re called on in class or when you have to give a report. This kind of stress can help you get things done well. You may do a better job in your book report if the anxiety pushes you to do more work before you read it to the class.
Sometimes stress can turn into something bad if you keep having stressful feelings for a long time. This kind of stress isn’t going to help you. It can make you sick. You may have trouble paying attention at school and forget things easily.

Then one day, some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people who liked to eat frogs’ legs. However, they didn’t have enough frogs of their own, so they wanted to buy frogs from other places. This seemed like money for nothing. There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were useless to the villagers. All they had to do was to catch them. Agreement was reached, and the children were sent to the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect frogs and hand over the money. For the first time, the villagers were able to dream of a beautiful future. But the dream didn’t last long.
The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed that the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and there seemed to be more insects around lately.
The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops falling and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂)and medicine. Soon there was no money left.
Then the villagers realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job—eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly. They were damaging the crops and spreading diseases.
