American English and British English are very different.Sometimes this difference is so big that the two seem like different languages!

Some words in British English mean things that are different in American English.Forexample,a“raincoat”(American English) is called a “mackintosh” in British English.But in America,a mackintosh is a kind of computer.

Most American sayings mean nothing to the British.Forexample,Americans like to say,“Wake up and smell the coffee”,which means “Wake up and face reality”.But the British think it is silly—they do not drink coffee in the morning.Instead,most of them drink tea.

Of course,the two languages are the same in many ways.To“call” someone(American English) is to “ring” somebody in Britain.The two languages borrow from each other a lot.But for foreign students learning English,there can be many problems.Afterall,American English and British English have,over the years,become so different.Foreign students often learn British English,but when they come to the USA,they cannot understand any American English!So you must ask yourself where you want to go in the future,America or England?If it is England,you should learn British English.But if you want to study in America,try learning as much true American English as possible.Watch American movies,listen to American songs,read books written in American English,and talk with an American accent—not a British one!
