Brother held his basketball under his arm and looked out the window. It was raining outside "Mother will never let me go out in this weather, " he sighed. Bored, he started playing his basketball. His annoyed Sister, who was reading on the sofa nearby, frowned. She ordered Brother to stop but her words fell on deaf ears. Angry, she stretched her hand out to hit the ball away. However, it knocked over Mother's favourite lamp. The lamp fell onto the floor with a loud crash!

The kids stood wide-eyed at the broken lamp. Seconds later, they listened in horror as Mother's footsteps were coming closer and closer to them. All they had time to do was to hide the basketball behind the couch. "What happened here?" Mother appeared at the door, screaming. Words escaped Brother's lips. "It was the wind. " Although Sister knew it was not the truth. she nodded her head.

Sadly, Mother breathed a sigh. She bent down and picked up the broken pieces of the lamp. Instantly, a wave of guilt swept over the children. Glancing at each other, they knew they needed to make things right. "Mother, we broke the lamp. We're sorry, " the kids admitted. Mother looked up to the kids and shook her head. "It's not about the broken lamp. We can always stick the pieces back together. I'm just sad that my kids aren't truthful, "she said with disappointment in her voice.

Take care of your plants! They may "scream" if you treat them badly. Although this is an exaggeration, plants can make sounds when they are stressed, according to a recent paper published in Cell.

“Plants interact with insects and other animals all the time, and many of these organisms use sound for communication, so it would be impossible for plants not to use sound at all, "Lilach Hadany, co-author of the study, told Science Focus

With this in mind, the research team started by recording plants' sounds. They placed tobacco and tomato plants in soundproof boxes. Several ultrasonic microphones were then put near the plants which can record at frequencies(频率) between 20 and 250 kilohertz. The maximum frequency that a human adult's ear can hear is about 16 kilohertz

There were three groups of plants: the first group wasn't watered for five days, the second group had the stems cut off and the last group was untouched. The microphones caught sounds at a frequency of 40 to 80 kilohertz from the first two groups. The sound, which was similar to the noise of popcorn popping when "translated" into a frequency humans can hear, grew louder and louder during the five days of water stress. They became lower as the plants dried out

A stressed plant produced the popping sound around 30 to 50 times per hour, while the untouched group only produced around once per hour, according to the study. The researchers haven't yet discovered how the sounds are made. One theory is that they could be made during cavitations, which is a process of an air bubble in the plant collapsing under some kind of pressure.

After the experiment, the team gathered the data on stressed plants and then made machine-learning software that could tell how plants "feel". It could tell the difference between unstressed plants, thirsty plants and cut plants, which can be useful for farmers in monitoring the conditions of their crops.

    28. Why did the researchers place tobacco and tomato plants in soundproof boxes?

    A. To help these plants to grow rapidly

    B. To shut off the noise in the environment

    C. To take care of these plants carefully

    D. To protect these plants from sunlight

    29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

    A. The equipment of the experiment

    C. The purpose of the experiment

    B. The principle of the experiment

    D. The procedure of the experiment

    30. What could be one of the potential benefits of the discovery?

    A. Helping animals hear plants' sound.

    B. Producing a machine-learning model.

    C. Helping farmers take better care of crops.

    D. Harvesting crops at the appropriate time.

    31. Which column in the newspaper is the passage probably from?

    A. Science.   B. Health.   C. Entertainment.  D. Sports.

    D

Zarya of the Dawn, a graphic novel written by KrisKashtanova, has made headlines recently. Its images were created through the artificial intelligence system Midjourney. But the US Copyright (版权)Office said in a Feb22 letter that they would reject the images' copyright, stating that they "are not the product of human authorship.

The decision is one of the first made by a US court or agency on copyright protection for works created with Al. It comes during the rise of AI software like Midjourney and ChatGPT.

"The output of an AI model depends directly on the creative input of the artist and is not random. "

Kashtanova said on Twitter. She was considering how best to press ahead with the argument that the images themselves were a "direct expression of my creativity and therefore copyrightable. However, the Copyright Office said Kashtanova was not the "mastermind" behind the images themselves and Midjourney's specific output cannot be predicted by users.

The case of Zarya of the Dawn is not the only conflict in a debate that has come to the front of the discussion. Another recent example is ChatGPT

Intellectual property law, copyrights and patents have been based on common concept of ownership. But now, with the rise of AI-created works, the question has become:Who or what actually made the work? Who should get the credit

Whether that credit belongs to the AI, the programmer of the AI's model, the humans who trained the AI's data. or the user who guides the AI to produce text and art, the law is still not clear on the matter. However, I figure that this issue will change and develop rapidly over the next several years

    32. Why has Zarya of the Dawn made headlines recently?

    A. Because of its popularity

    B. Because of its writer

    C. Because of its copyright

    D. Because of AI system Midjourney

    33. What can we learn from the case of Zarya of the Dawn?

    A. AI artwork isn't protected by copyright

    B. Kris Kashtanova was found dishonest

    C. AI-created images should be encouraged

    D. AI tools should be used within the law

    34. What is the writer's attitude towards the copyright of Al-created works?

    A. Positive   B. Negative   C. Worried   D. Disappointed

    35. What is the best title of the passage'

    A. KrisKashtanova Keeps Fighting alone

    B. KrisKashtanova Writes Graphic Novel

    C. AI-created Works Keep on the Rise

    D. AI-created Images Lose US Copyright

I have had to help my friends from time to time. Three years ago, I had to help a friend who has a certain fear of spiders but didn't want to seek professional help from a doctor to overcome his fear. This is the story of Enrique and how his life changed one Saturday morning in 2008.

While in the living room of his house, Enrique saw a big spider on his right shoe. Just as he thought that it was the biggest spider he had seen in his life, the animal left its place on his shoe and slipped up his pants. Nothing so frightening had ever happened to him before. At that moment, he remembered two facts he had read in a National Geographic magazine. Alf-spiders, even the smallest ones, carry poison and can inject (注射)it and spiders only sting (, ) when they feel that their lives are in danger. Looking at the size of the big spider, Enrique was certain that the spider must have plenty of poison in it.

Therefore. he thought the most sensible thing to do was to stand still, since the slightest movement would result in the animal injecting him with a deadly amount of poison. He kept still for five to six hours, hoping that the spider would eventually leave but it did not. Despite his wife's request for him to give up the plan, Enrique insisted on keeping still as long as needed.

Around two o'clock in the afternoon, his helpless wife called me in to see if I could solve the problem. _______________________________________________________________________

    第四部分  写作

    第一节参考范文:

    Dear Ms Lin,

As Teachers’ Day approaches, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to you. What impresses me most is your Excellency in education as well as your considerate, patient and humorous personality.

One month ago, with the final test around the corner, I was in low spirits, being afraid of letting my parents down. It was then that you comforted me and discussed with me the reasons for my poor performances in previous tests. More unforgettably, you managed to help me with my study and inspired me from time to time.

Ms. Lin, I’m more than grateful for what you have done for me. Happy Teachers’ Day! Wish you happiness and good health.

    Yours,

    Li Hua

    第四部分  写作第二节参考范文:

Around two o’clock in the afternoon, his helpless wife called me in to see if I could solve the problem. On arriving at Enrique’s house, I found he was still standing in the same pose. I realized that he was in a state of shock and needed to be calmed down. After some time of talking to him, I asked his wife to find a pair of scissors and newspapers. Then I used the scissors to cut the pants, rolled up the newspaper, knocked the spider to the floor and killed it. To convince Enrique that the spider was actually dead, I carried it and threw it away.

After the accident, Enrique’s life changed a lot. He realized that his fear of spiders had taken over his life and prevented him from enjoying many activities he used to love. So, he decided to seek professional help and started seeing a doctor to overcome his fear of spiders. Through the doctor’s help and exposure to spiders in a controlled environment, Enrique gradually learned to manage his fear and regain control of his life. The experience taught him an important lesson – sometimes, seeking help from others is the best way to overcome our fears and problems.
