Most of us take the task of buying a cup of coffee for granted, as it seems simple enough. However, we have no idea just how stressful tasks like this can be for people who suffer from disabilities. That’s why it’s so heart-warming to see a story like this in which a barista (咖啡师) does something small to make life a little easier for someone who is deaf.
Ibby Piracha lost his hearing when he was only two years old, and he now goes to his local cafe in Leesburg, Virginia to order a cup of coffee at least three times a week. Though all the baristas who work there have his order memorized, Ibby always write his order on his phone and shows it to the barista.
One day, however, one of the baristas did something that changed everything! After Ibby ordered his coffee, he was amazed when barista Krystal pane handed him a note in response. “I’ve been learning sign language just so you can have the same experience as everyone else,” the note read. Krystal then asked Ibby in sign language what he would like to order.
Ibby was touched that she would learn sign language just to help him feel welcome. “I was just so moved that she actually wanted to learn sign language. It is really a totally different language and it was something that she wanted to do because of me. Because I was a deaf customer. I was very, very impressed,” Ibby said.
Krystal had spent hours watching teaching videos so that she could learn enough sign language to give Ibby the best customer service that she could! “My job is to make sure people have the experience they expect and that’s what I gave him,” Krystal says.
Ibby posted a photo of Krystal’s note online, and it quickly went viral, getting hundreds of likes and comments that praised Krystal for her kind action.
24.What can we learn about Ibby Piracha from paragraph 2?
A.He was born deaf. B.He lives a hard life.

A.Kind and considerate. B.Honest and responsible.
C.Sociable and humorous. D.Ambitious and sensitive.
27.What message does the author want to convey in the text?
A.Two heads are better than one. B.A small act makes a difference.
C.One good turn deserves another. D.Actions speak louder than words.

“While animals can’t pick out precise numbers, they can understand that more is more. Interestingly, we know now that numerical(数值的)competence is present on almost every branch of the animal tree of life,” says Andreas Nieder, a neurobiologist from the University of Tuebingen. “Different groups of animals obviously developed this trait(特点)independently from others and that strongly indicates that it has to be of adaptive value.”
Honeybees, for instance, can remember the number of landmarks they pass when searching for food in order to find their way back to the hive. The last common ancestor between honeybees and primates lived about 600 million years ago. But still, they evolved numerical competence that, in many respects, is comparable to vertebrate(脊椎动物的)numerical competence. Also, for example, male frogs sing “advertisement” calls to attract females. The females, listening for the complexity of their calls, choose the male that sings the most calls.
Wolves are more likely to hunt successfully if they have the right number of wolves in their pack for the size of their prey(猎物): With prey like deer, only around six to eight wolves are needed, while hunting wild ox requires a pack of nine to thirteen. Their prey also uses this concept to protect themselves from predators — deer tend to live in large herds to reduce the chance of any individual becoming prey. So obviously they are assessing the number of individuals in their groups for their everyday life situations.
Despite these many examples of numerical competence in animals, this subject has not gotten many first-hand studies. “Many of these behavioral findings in the wild have usually been collected as by-products or accidental findings of other research questions,” says Nieder. He argues that more research needs to be done to fully understand the numerical competence.
28.The phenomenon of animals having their own numerical competence shows that .
A.all groups of animals are related in some ways
B.numerical competence must have a survival benefit
C.the intelligence of animals varies with different environments
D.animals’ numerical competence is determined by their adaptability
29.What role does numerical competence play in wolves’ hunting?
A.It helps them form hunting groups.
B.It gives them more options to hunt.
C.It makes them discover more prey.
D.It offers them new skills to hunt.
30.How does the author mainly develop this text?
A.By listing figures. B.By asking questions.
C.By giving examples. D.By making comparisons.
31.From which is the text probably taken?
A.A biology textbook. B.A health magazine.
C.A travel brochure. D.A research paper.
    D
Modern research on body language — often called nonverbal behavior — began in the 1960s and 1970s with studies that aimed to demonstrate the universality (普遍性) of facial expressions of emotion. That work was inspired in part by Charles Darwin’s study The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872). But it had received little attention for around a century, according to nonverbal communication expert David Matsumoto.
Then modern researchers examined how the brain reacts to facial expressions and how babies copy facial and hand gestures. And scientists have also realized the complexity (复杂性) of body language.
Much research has suggested that body language is often hard to interpret or understand. But for years some advisers and experts have been using their knowledge in many practical areas.
“I help people influence and persuade others around, how trustworthy and credible their message is by helping them with their specific nonverbal communication.” said Mark Bowden. He is the author of “Winning Body Language”. a guide for readers including business people and famous people. He focuses on where a person faces their body and how much space they take up, as well as those gestures.
Some experts also say they can use those signals to interpret hidden emotions. Joe Navarro is the author of What Every Body Is Saying. It is a book about reading a person’s mind from their nonverbal behavior. “It’s easy to spar a speaker’s lip movements when he faces a question he doesn’t like.” Joe said.
While the work of these experts attracts large audiences many scientists are unsure whether their methods are reliable. “Our facial expressions show certain types of emotional states.” David Matsumoto said. So do some body movements. “But people do all kinds of things with their bodies.” he said. Your raised eyebrow (眉毛) could express doubt — but in might also signal discomfort or surprise. “The same hand gesture could mean different things in different cultures,” he said.
32.What role did Charles Darwin’s study play according to paragraph 1?
A.It unlocked the secret of the human mind.
B.It promoted the development of human language.
C.It helped start modern research on body language.
D.It encouraged people to care more about animals.
33.What can we infer about Mark Bowden?
A.He gives advice on business language. B.He focuses mainly on facial expressions.
C.He pays more attention to spoken language. D.He teaches people about body language.
34.What did David Matsumoto think of Joe Navarro’s methods?
A.They were instructional. B.They were doubtful
C.They were experimental. D.They were necessary.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Can body language tell important truths? B.Is nonverbal behavior that complex?
C.Should you know more about body language? D.Do experts know how to interpret emotions?

    A Wonder Plant
Every rainy season, the mountain gorillas (大猩猩) of Central Africa migrate to the foothills and lower parts of the Virunga Mountains to feed on bamboo. For the 650 or so that remain in the wild, it’s a vital food source. 36 Gorillas aren’t the only locals keen on bamboo. For the people near the mountains, it’s a valuable raw material used for building houses and making household items. But in the past 100 years, resources have come under increasing pressure as populations have exploded and large areas of bamboo forest have been cleared to make way for farms.
37 All over the world, the ranges of many bamboo species appear to be reducing, endangering the people and animals that depend upon them. A report published by the UN Environment Programme has revealed just how profound our ignorance of global bamboo resources is.
Bamboo is a wonder plant. Its ecological role extends beyond providing food and habitat for animals. Bamboo tends to grow in stands made up of groups of individual plants that grow from root systems. Its extensive root systems are crucial in preventing water loss and soil erosion. 38 In India 25% of paper produced is made from bamboo fiber, and in Brazil, 100,000 hectares of bamboo are grown for its production. Because of its flexibility and strength, it has traditionally been used in construction. Bamboo is often the only readily available raw material for people in many developing countries.
39 Ray Townsend, vice president of the British Bamboo Society, says, “Some plants are threatened because they can’t survive in the habitat—they aren’t strong enough or there aren’t enough of them, perhaps. But bamboo can take care of itself-it is strong enough to survive if left alone. 40 ” When forest goes, it is transformed into something else: there isn’t anywhere for forest plants such as bamboo to grow if you create a cattle grass land.
    A.Sadly, this isn’t a single story.
B.It is the physical disturbance that is the threat to bamboo.
C.Until now, bamboo has been viewed as a second-class plant.
D.Without it, their chances of survival would be reduced significantly.
E.Besides, bamboo’s most immediate significance lies in its economic value.
F.More than a billion people rely on bamboo for either their shelter or income.
G.Despite bamboo’s value in economy and ecology, its situation is all the more worrying.

I was preparing lunch in the kitchen while my 2 - year - old son, Adam, was playing by himself at the front door. Suddenly, I heard him shouting, “Look, Mama! Doggie!” I put away what I was doing and stuck my head out of the door. Brandy, our next - door neighbor's 11 -year-old dog, was there again. I quickly ran out, shouting at her: “Go away!”
Brandy's owner, an old woman, had died about a month before. Her family had emptied her house and put up a “For Sale” sign in the front yard, but they had left old Brandy behind. Nowhere to go, for weeks, she'd been wandering around the neighborhood.
It wasn't that I disliked dogs or anything like that. I just didn't think about them very much. I had never kept a dog as a pet and had never thought to get one.
Brandy ran away and I stayed outside with Adam. Then the phone was ringing. I went inside to get the call. When I came back, Adam was gone. I searched the yard, front and back, then the basketball court and public pool. No trace of him. I was so nervous that I ran back home and called the police, then my husband.
We searched the neighborhood thoroughly. Suddenly I heard a dog barking in the distance. “It's coming from the woods,” one of my neighbors said. We followed the barking to a wooded cliff(悬崖). There we found my son, and he was just inches away from the edges of the cliff, fast asleep. Brandy was beside him, leaning against him to keep him away from the edge. When I picked Adam up, Brandy sank down on the ground, breathing quickly. She must have been holding Adam there for hours!
    注意:
    1.续写的词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I thanked the police and brought Adam and Brandy back to our house.

Hello, shoppers. Thanks for coming to our Christmas sale. We’re now opening two hours earlier than the usual opening time of 9: 00 a. m., to start our sale this week. Everything in the store is 30% off this week, and we’re running a series of donation activities.
First, the more you spend, the more you give. For every dollar spent on dresses, trousers, pants, or anything else here at TJ’s, we’ll personally donate the same amount to St. Christopher’s Children Hospital. The donation will be used to buy books for the children and medical facilities for the hospital. Second, we’re starting a clothing recycling program. The clothes you’re planning to throw away can be recycled in our store. They will be donated to thousands of homeless people nationwide. And finally, we’ve partnered with Duncan’s Toys across the street for our secret Christmas program. When you check out, you can choose to buy a gift. It will be given to a young child on Christmas Eve at Warwick Elementary School.
Again, thanks to everyone for coming today and we hope you have a good day.

Oh Give Me a Biome (生物群系) 部分中的“look at how animals develop over time and are adapted to living in each(看看动物是如何随着时间的推移而发展并适应每种环境的)”可知,在这个活动项目中,学生们可以研究动物是如何随着时间的推移而发展,并适应每一个生物群系的。
根据Pricing部分的内容※ Minimum cost of $ 240 if you have fewer than 15 students.※ $ 16/student; 1 free guardian for every 10 students※ $ 19/additional guardian(※少于15名学生的最低费用为240美元。
    24.D 25.A 26.A 27.B
根据文章第二段“Ibby Piracha lost his hearing when he was only two years old, and he now goes to his local cafe in Leesburg, Virginia to order a cup of coffee at least three times a week.(Ibby Piracha两岁时失聪,现在他每周至少三次去弗吉尼亚州利斯堡当地的咖啡馆点一杯咖啡。)”
根据文章第三段“After Ibby ordered his coffee, he was amazed when barista Krystal pane handed him a note in response. “I’ve been learning sign language just so you can have the same experience as everyone else,” the note read. Krystal then asked Ibby in sign language what he would like to order.(在Ibby点了咖啡后,他惊讶地看到咖啡师Krystal Pane递给他一张纸条作为回应。纸条上写道:“我一直在学习手语,这样你就能和其他人有同样的体验。”然后Krystal用手语问Ibby他想点什么。)”可知,Krystal学习手语是为了更好地为Ibby服务,让他能和其他人有同样的体验。故选A。
根据文章第三段“After Ibby ordered his coffee, he was amazed when barista Krystal pane handed him a note in response. “I’ve been learning sign language just so you can have the same experience as everyone else,” the note read. Krystal then asked Ibby in sign language what he would like to order.(在Ibby点了咖啡后,他惊讶地看到咖啡师Krystal Pane递给他一张纸条作为回应。纸条上写道:“我一直在学习手语,这样你就能和其他人有同样的体验。”然后Krystal用手语问Ibby他想点什么。)”以及最后一段“Ibby posted a photo of Krystal’s note online, and it quickly went viral, getting hundreds of likes and comments that praised Krystal for her kind action.( Ibby在网上发布了克里斯托纸条的照片,并迅速走红,得到了数百个赞和评论,称赞krystal的善举。)” 故选A。
根据文章第一段“That’s why it’s so heart-warming to see a story like this in which a barista (咖啡师) does something small to make life a little easier for someone who is deaf.(这就是为什么看到这样一个咖啡师做了一件小事让聋哑人的生活变得更轻松的故事是如此温暖人心。)”以及文章第四段“Ibby was touched that she would learn sign language just to help him feel welcome. “I was just so moved that she actually wanted to learn sign language. It is really a totally different language and it was something that she wanted to do because of me. Because I was a deaf customer. I was very, very impressed,” Ibby said.( Ibby很感动,她会学习手语,只是为了让他感到受欢迎。“我很感动,她真的想学手语。这真的是一种完全不同的语言,她想做这件事是因为我。因为我是个聋子顾客。我非常非常印象深刻,” Ibby说。)”可知,文章主要想表达的是一个小举动却让Ibby印象深刻,并让他心里充满温暖。故选B。

28.推理判断题。根据第一段最后一句“Different groups of animals obviously developed this trait(特点)independently from others and that strongly indicates that it has to be of adaptive value.”
根据第三段第一句“Wolves are more likely to hunt successfully if they have the right number of wolves in their pack for the size of their prey(猎物): With prey like deer, only around six to eight wolves are needed, while hunting wild ox requires a pack of nine to thirteen.” 故选A。
Honeybees, for instance…; Also, for example, male frogs sing “advertisement” calls to attract females. ;第三段Wolves are more…和deer tend to live in large herds…
Despite these many examples of numerical competence in animals, this subject has not gotten many first-hand studies.
    32.C 33.D 34.B 35.A
根据第一段中的“Modern research on body language — often called nonverbal behavior — began in the 1960s and 1970s with studies that aimed to demonstrate the universality (普遍性) of facial expressions of emotion. That work was inspired in part by Charles Darwin’s study The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872). (关于肢体语言的现代研究——通常被称为非语言行为——始于20世纪60年代和70年代,旨在证明面部表情表达情感的普遍性。这项工作的部分灵感来自查尔斯·达尔文的研究《人类和动物的情感表达》(1872))”可知,查尔斯·达尔文的研究帮助开启了对肢体语言的现代研究。故选C。
33.推理判断题。根据第四段““I help people influence and persuade others around, how trustworthy and credible their message is by helping them with their specific nonverbal communication.” said Mark Bowden. He is the author of “Winning Body Language”. a guide for readers including business people and famous people. He focuses on where a person faces their body and how much space they take up, as well as those gestures.(“我通过帮助人们进行特定的非语言沟通,帮助他们影响和说服周围的人,让他们的信息多么值得信赖和可信。”Mark Bowden说。他是《成功的肢体语言》一书的作者。为商界人士、名人等读者提供指南。他关注的是一个人面对身体的位置,他们的身体占据了多少空间,以及那些手势)”可推知,Mark Bowden教授人们如何使用肢体语言。故选D。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“While the work of these experts attracts large audiences many scientists are unsure whether their methods are reliable. “Our facial expressions show certain types of emotional states.” David Matsumoto said. So do some body movements. (虽然这些专家的工作吸引了大量观众,但许多科学家不确定他们的方法是否可靠。“我们的面部表情显示了某些类型的情绪状态。”David Matsumoto说。所以做一些身体动作)”可推知,David Matsumoto认为Joe Navarro的方法令人怀疑。故选B。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“Modern research on body language — often called nonverbal behavior — began in the 1960s and 1970s with studies that aimed to demonstrate the universality (普遍性) of facial expressions of emotion. (关于肢体语言的现代研究——通常被称为非语言行为——始于20世纪60年代和70年代,旨在证明面部表情表达情感的普遍性)”及最后一段中的““But people do all kinds of things with their bodies.” he said. Your raised eyebrow (眉毛) could express doubt — but in might also signal discomfort or surprise. “The same hand gesture could mean different things in different cultures,” he said.(“但人们可以用身体做各种各样的事情。”他说。扬起眉毛可能表示怀疑,但也可能表示不舒服或惊讶。“同样的手势在不同的文化中可能有不同的含义,”他说)”可知,文章介绍了肢体语言的现代研究,面部表情表达情感存在普遍性,但是同样的肢体语言又可能会表达不同的意思。由此可知,Can body language tell important truths?(肢体语言能揭示重要的真相吗?)适合作本文最佳标题。故选A。

But bamboo can take care of itself-it is strong enough to survive if left alone.(但是竹子可以自己照顾它自己——如果它能独立生存,它就足够强壮了。) When forest goes, it is transformed into something else: there isn’t anywhere for forest plants such as bamboo to grow if you create a cattle grass land.(当森林消失时,它就变成了另一种东西:如果你创造了一个牛草地,就没有任何地方可以种植像竹子这样的森林植物。) It is the physical disturbance that is the threat to bamboo.(对竹子的威胁是破坏竹子躯干。)

    66.Dear Elsa,
Learning that teaching assistants are needed for the Summer Camp for International Students in the Summer Vacation, I am writing to apply for it.
I consider it a precious opportunity to serve our school as well as help our foreign friends have a better knowledge of our culture. I am confident that I am qualified for the job. Firstly, I am fluent in English and have no difficulty in communicating with foreign teachers. Secondly, having served as a teaching assistant, I know what to expect. I really hope my application can meet with your approval.
    Thank you.
          Yours,
        Li Hua
67.I thanked the police and brought Adam and Brandy back to our house. She hesitated for a moment on our doorstep, no doubt remembering the time I'd driven her away. Seeing her reaction, I felt ashamed. I was really grateful for what she had done for my son. But for her holding Adam for hours, he would have died because of falling down the cliff. At that moment, I was sincerely willing to accept her as a member of our family.
After a brief discussion with my husband, I made a decision. I decided to have a conversation with her. "Come on, girl," I said. "This is your home now." Brandy stepped in, and once she saw she was really welcome, she relaxed and lay down on the floor just inside the door. She'd done a great thing, and I wondered if she knew it. She'd certainly touched me in a way that no animal ever had. What a pity a dog like Brandy had been left behind!
