一,Starting out
Xu Xiake was known in China as a great (探险家), (地理学家) and travel writer. Born in 1587, he loved reading books about geography and nature and from an early age wished to see the (自然奇迹) of the country.
Xu started to travel at the age of 22 with the (encourage) of his mother. As well as exploring famous mountains and rivers, he went to places had never been visited before. His first journeys lasted only a few months so that he could often return home (regular). But by 1639, about two years before his (die), Xu (travel) for years at a time, (cover) almost half of modern China. Unlike most travelers these days, Xu travelled the hard way— on foot. He showed great courage during his journeys. He often went without food for days and suffered bad weather, (ill), dangerous animals and even (rob). all these difficulties, his (curious) about the natural world kept him going.
Xu wrote his discoveries in his travel (diary), which are the earliest records of landscapes in Southern China. Xu's own experiences enabled him (correct) several mistakes in (early) books. One of his most important discoveries was that the Jinsha River was the true source of the Yangze River. At more than 600,000 words, Xu's diaries are regarded as one of the greatest works in both scientific and literary fields. Translated modern Chinese, it is amazing to hear the voice of Xu Xiake (speak) to us the centuries about his adventures.
二,Understanding ideas:
CLIMBING QOMOLANGMA: WORTH THE RISKS?
Last year, hundreds of people spent good money an experience that they knew would include crowds, (comfort) and danger. Many would become sick, (由于) the extreme cold and low (气压), and a few would even lose their lives. Yet, (尽管) all this, by the end of the trip many were already planning to return. For these people, (climb) Qomolangma is an experience (无与伦比/独一无二的) , making some feel weak and others, ( power) .
British mountain climber George Mallory wrote climbing Qomolangma, "What we get from this adventure is just (纯粹的) joy... We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is life means and what life is ." Sadly, Mallory would die on the mountain in 1924, although his body would not be found until many years later. It is still not known if he succeeded in (reach) the top of Qomolangma before it took his life.
In 2011, words similar those of Mallory were spoken by American mountain climber Alan Arnette, who climbed Qomolangma in that year and was going to climb other high mountains around the world. "It brings focus what's important to you." He added, "There are a thousand reasons to (回头/返回) and only one to keep going. You really have to focus on the one reason that's most important and (独特的) to you. It forces you to look deep inside yourself and (明白) if you really have the physical, as well as mental, (坚韧) to push when you want to stop."
With the (major) of attempts (climb) Qomolangma resulting either total success or failure, is there also a scientific reason behind this risk-taking? Recent studies (表明) that risk-taking may be part of human nature, with some of us more likely to take (risk) than others. Psychologist Frank Farley has spent years (study) people who jump out of planes and drive fast cars, as well as those climb Qomolangma. He refers to the personalities of these people "Type T", with the "T" (stand) for "thrill".
Speaking to the LA Times about the "Type T” personalities, Farley said, "They'll say, I'm not taking risks, I'm an expert...' They don't want to die and they don't expect (die ) ."
Research also suggests that our desire (seek) risks can be connected how much we expect to benefit from the result.
this in mind, are the benefits of climbing Qomolangma worth the risks? It's totally up to you.
三,Developing ideas:

In order to keep this secret, Captain Nemo tells his three newest passengers that they are not permitted (leave) the submarine. While Ned Land can think only of escaping. Aronnax and Conseil (fascinate) by their adventure in the new underwater world. In this part (adapt) from the chapter of the book, Aronnax
(描述) the experience of walking on the sea bed....
And now, how can I (回顾/追述) the impression (leave) upon me by that walk under the waters? (那种奇遇是语言无法描述的)! Captain Nemo walked in front, one of his men (follow) some steps behind. Conceil and I remained near each other, as if an exchange of words (be) possible through our metal cases. I no longer felt the (weigh) of my clothes, or of my shoes, of my air supply, or my thick helmet, my head shook like a nut in its shell.
The light, which (light) the soil 30 feet below the surface of the ocean, (astonish) me by its power. The solar rays (shine) through the watery mass easily, and consumed all color, and I clearly (看清) objects a distance of 150 yards. Beyond that the colors (dark) into fine shades of deep blue and gradually disappeared. (true) this water which surrounded me was but another air heavier than the Earth’s atmosphere, but almost as clear. Above me was the calm surface of the sea. We were walking on fine, even sand, not (wrinkle), as on a flat shore, which keeps the impression of the waves. The (dazzle) carpet, really a reflector, drove away the rays of the sun with wonderful (intense), which (导致/引起) the vibration which passed through every atom of liquid. Shall I be believed when I say that, at the (deep) of 30 feet, I could see as if I was (在大白天)?
