For eight-year-old Toby, who is deaf, watching films or TV can sometimes be a bit pointless, because so many of them don’t have sign language versions. “We have subtitles but it goes too fast,” his dad Jarod Mills said. But now, Toby has some help thanks to an app developed by a 17-year-old student, Mariella Satow, who created a signing app called SignUp.
She got the idea when she was teaching herself American Sign Language(ASL)—one of hundreds of sign languages used across the world. Manella wanted to watch TV shows to help her learn, and she was disappointed to discover how few had signed versions. It’s taken a year for Mariella to develop the technology, with lots of help from ASL teachers and the deaf community.
The app is available in the US as a browser extension—with an interpreter appearing in a box once the film starts playing. It only works on Disney Plus films at the moment, because that’s where Mariella thought she could help the most children. Jarod, who works at a school for deaf children, says it was “exciting” watching Toby use Mariella’s invention. He says, “Kids are getting information like any hearing child does.”
Deaf people in the UK face many of the same barriers when it comes to cinema and TV. “A hearing person can go to the cinema any time whereas deaf people have to make sure there’s a suitable viewing a time we’re free,” says 27-year-old Stacey Worboys from Cardiff. She has learned British Sign Language(BSL), and is comfortable using subtitles when watching TV shows and films. But she feels having an interpreter would make things “more inclusive”, especially for someone who might struggle with subtitles. Stacey and Toby aren’t the only people to be welcoming Mariella’s app. It’s now got thousands of users.
Stacey says a UK version of an app like SignUp would make films and TV “more accessible” for the deaf community. Mariella is up for the challenge—and hopes to make a British Sign Language version of her app for other streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. “There are more than 300 sign languages used worldwide, so it’ll take a long time to get all of those versions out,” she says.
24. Mariella created SignUp because of ______.
A. her awareness of Toby’s frustration
B. the encouragement from her teachers
C. her childhood memories in a cinema
D. lack of signed TV shows for the deaf
25. It can be inferred that Jarod holds a ______ attitude to Mariella’s invention.
A. negative B. favorable C. neutral D. doubtful
26. What will be Mariella’s next challenge?
A. To design a BSL version of the app.
B. To update the app for cinemas.
C. To promote the use of her app worldwide.
D. To launch a universal version of the app.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Mariella?
A. Curious and fearless B. Talented and humorous
C. Creative and caring D. knowledgeable and humble
C
It is well known that children with stable, loving families are less likely to experience depression or anxiety. But little research has looked at positive effects.
Robert Whitaker at Columbia University in New York and his colleagues analyzed data from a survey of over 37,000 children aged 11 to 13 living in 26 countries that asked about their happiness and family relationships. They found close family relationship contributes to kids’ growing both physically and mentally.
To assess family connections, the children were asked to rate on a five-point scale, how much they agreed with statements like “There are people in my family who care about me” and “My parent(s) listen to me and take what I say into account”. Their level of flourishing was measured by looking at the extent to which the children agreed, on a scale of 0 to 10 with statements such as “I like being the way I am”, and “I feel positive about my future”. Then the researchers used the responses to give each child a “family bond strength” score and a “flourishing” score. They found that the two scores were connected, and children with the strongest family bonds were 49 per cent more likely to flourish than those with the weakest.
Children with good family relationships are probably more likely to flourish because they have “an inner sense of safety” says Whitaker. This sense of safety is what allows children to “understand who they are and accept who they are”, and to “grow and learn, have positive relationships and develop a sense of mastery and purpose”,he says.
To promote healthy family relationships, Whitaker says the best thing that parents and other caregivers can do is to spend quality time with children. “This can include simple activities like eating meals, going for walks or doing chores together,” he says. “Being present, open, interested and focused at these times is the basis of family connection.”
28. How did Robert’s team carry out the study?
A. By surveying and analyzing data.
B. By referring to library literature.
C. By observing children’s behavior.
D. By comparing subjects’ background.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. The subjects of the study. B. The purpose of the study.
C. The process of the study. D. The application of the study.
30. What does Robert Whitaker suggest parents do?
A. Set an example for children.
B. Keep children company attentively.
C. Lecture children about their acts.
D. Teach children to be independent.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. More Love, Less Anxiety.
B. The Stronger Family Ties, the Healthier Children.
C. Factors Determining Children’s Physical Health.
D. Activities Promoting Healthy Family Relationship.

Earth could be home to 9,000 more species of trees than previously believed, according to scientists. The latest estimate of the number of tree species in the world shows there are about 73,000 different types of trees in existence. It took academics three years to count them all. In all, 150 scientists working with the Global Forest Biodiversity Initiative are behind the study.
The team collected an extensive database of forest tree species around the world and then mapped them. Then they used artificial intelligence and a supercomputer to do complex calculations, which discovered there are in fact 73,000 tree species.
Before the research was conducted, scientists’ knowledge of trees in many parts of the world was patchy as data was only collected by observation or making lists of trees in different areas. Of the newly found species, 40 percent of them could be in grasslands and tropical (热带的) forests in South America.
Study author Roberto Cazzolla Gatti, a professor from the University of Bologna, said: “We combined individual datasets, coming from someone going out to a forest stand and measuring every single tree, into one massive global dataset of tree-level data. Counting the number of tree species worldwide is like a puzzle with pieces spreading all over the world. We, the Global Forest Biodiversity Initiative, solved it together as a team, each sharing our own piece.”
Researchers say their findings highlight how delicate biodiversity is and how weak it is to changes caused by humans, such as the climate crisis and unsustainable land use, with rare species being at the greatest risk. Extensive knowledge of tree richness and diversity is key to preserving the stability and functionality of the ecosystem.
32. How many tree species were originally believed to exist on Earth?
A. About 9,000. B. About 64,000. C. About 73,000. D. About 82,000.
33. What does the underlined word “patchy” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Broad. B. Changeable. C. Incomplete. D. Reliable.
34. What does professor Gatti think highly of during the research?
A. Advanced measuring methods. B. A well-designed plan.
C. Individual financial assistance. D. Integrated cooperation.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The significance of the research findings.
B. The prospect of the research application.
C. The challenge of carrying out the research.
D. The background information of researchers.

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind and caring, and always made people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I love going to the local nursing home to help with her when I was a child. However, once I became a teenager, I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was 12, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. But I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything? At last, I made my way outside with my mother. Angry and annoyed, I climbed into the car and shoot the door loudly. I sat in silence, too upset to talk. “Tasha, do you know where we are going?” Mom asked calmly. I remained silent. “Sweetheart, we’re going to the children’s shelter. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
I feel a pain slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there?
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. As we approached the front door, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and flowers welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so.
Mom rang the doorbell. We were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was seriously wounded. Most of the children had noticeable physical scars such as cuts, burns and scratches. What a terrible life they must had had before they moved here! My heart sank. As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.
