In the live-streaming channel of Yang Weiyun, no singing or dancing is performed nor are products sold. Yang teaches pinyin, reading and writing, something that has been most familiar to her for the past 50 years. The difference is her students are mostly adults.
The 73-year-old comes from Huainan city of Anhui province and is an experienced educator. She had been a Chinese teacher in an elementary school for 50 years. In retirement, Yang also wanted to do something meaningful. The rise of short video platforms gave her the idea of continuing her education attempt through live-streaming online. The retiree opened her live-streaming account in May 2021 and offered free pinyin courses designed for kindergarten pupils about to attend primary schools. However, she gradually learned among her viewers there are a lot of illiterate (文盲) adults.
Yang said she found many illiterate adults develop a sense of lack of confidence. They are afraid to go to new places, worried that they couldn’t teach their children or read their boss’s instructions. So, she added targeted content to meet their needs. “Many illiterate adults didn’t have the chance to go to school when they were young. They are the ones in urgent need of becoming literate. I wanted to give them a new starting point,” Yang said.
According to the seventh national census (人口普查) carried out last year, there are 38 million illiterate adults in China. Yang’s live-streaming channel offers an easy and private way for those who want to overcome adult illiteracy.
Yang said students learning through her live-streaming channel each have their own demands. So she always prepares her classes carefully after concluding a live-streaming session. She has tried her best to figure out what ways the students can learn and remember better, and her biggest wish now is to see these students graduate from her classes.
24.What’s Yang’s original purpose when she attempted teaching online?
A.To teach retired adults Chinese.
B.To spread Chinese character culture.
C.To teach kids before primary school.
D.To sell products in her live-streaming channel.
25.Why does Yang’s live-streaming class become a hit among adults?
A.She was an experienced and respectable teacher.
B.Many people believe her classes are beneficial for their children.
C.Her class is vivid and lively with singing or dancing performance.
D.Many illiterate adults can learn Chinese in an easy and private way in her class.
26.Which of the following can best describe Yang?
A.Devoted and helpful. B.Caring and brave.
C.Warm-hearted and strict. D.Persistent and honest.
27.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Illiterate adults need help in education.
B.A retired teacher teaches grown-ups pinyin online.
C.Short video platform offers new ways for education.
D.It’s never too late to teach.

Time to load up some popular games: new research indicates pigs have the mental capability to play video games. The study, published in Frontiers in Psychology, tested the ability of four pigs (Hamlet, Omelette, Ebony and Ivory) to play a simple joystick (操纵杆) game with their noses, moving a cursor (光标) to four targets on the screen. Although the animals didn’t show the skills to win a round any time, they did show an understanding of some simple games. Performing well not by chance, the pigs appeared to recognize that the movement of the cursor was controlled by the joystick. The fact that they did so well although they didn’t have flexible fingers is “extraordinary”, according to the researchers.
That pigs can do this should give us pause about what else they are capable of learning and how such learning may influence them,” said Purdue University’s Dr Candace Croney, the study’s lead author.
Researchers also noted that while the pigs could be taught to play the game using food as positive motivation, they also responded well to social interaction. In fact, when the game was made more challenging and the pigs became unwilling to participate in it, “only encouraging words from the experimenter” would make the pigs continue their training.
These findings are the latest to highlight the intelligence and learning abilities of pigs. Not only have they been shown to use mirrors to find hidden food, but studies have also shown how pigs can be taught to “come” and “sit” after oral commands.
As with any sentient (有感觉力的) beings, how we interact with pigs and what we do to them influences and matters to them. We therefore have a duty to further understand how pigs get information and what they are capable of learning and remembering, because this may help them understand their interactions with us and their environments.
28.What can be learned from Paragraph 1?
A.The pigs knew a lot about the video games.
B.The pigs operated joysticks with their noses.
C.The pigs competed with each other in the games.
D.The pigs sometimes performed well by chance.
29.What made researchers believe pigs socially interacted well?
A.Their being inspired by human words. B.Their being driven by food.
C.Their being willing to keep trying. D.Their being stopped by challenges.
30.Which of the following statement is true according to the passage?
A.Pigs can’t play video games for lack of flexible fingers.
B.When playing games, pigs can win a round at any time.
C.The research suggests that pigs are very friendly animals.
D.When games are difficult, pigs are unwilling to play them.
31.What will researchers probably focus on in the next stage of their experiment ?
A.How pigs learn to play challenging games.
B.How pigs improve their learning ability.
C.How pigs manage to get information.
D.How pigs adapt to their living environment.

Growing Vegetables in Space
Have you ever dreamed of travelling in space? Well, you may not go, but you may be able to eat vegetables grown from seeds that have! China, the USA and Russia have all become interested in whether it is possible to eat food grown from seeds that have been in space. Indeed since 1987 China has sent 1,000 species of seeds into space to do experiments. These include green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce and wheat.
The most advanced work on growing vegetables in space has been undertaken on the International Space Station run by Russian and American astronauts. One of the most exciting moments was when soybean seeds were brought back to Earth and planted. These seeds were the first to come from a crop grown entirely in space.
The scientists chose to grow soybeans in space because they are an important source of protein in the human diet. Mark Nall, director of Space Product Development Programme for National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA), said that “this experiment and others are paving the way for improving crops grown on Earth, as well as potentially feeding people living in space.” The problem is that producing a new strain of soybean is a slow procedure on Earth so the scientists hope that it can be speeded up in space. Perhaps the seeds may also develop some characteristics that will be useful for farmers-for example, produce more oil or protein.
However, the scientists are aware that there may be problems. “Conditions in outer space such as radiation and low gravity may cause big changes in the seeds,” said Jin Xing, a Chinese researcher. He knows that genetically modified food is still being debated and so some people will be very suspicious of these “space vegetables”. However Jin has a more positive view. He thinks that unlike genetically modified crops, no new genes are being introduced into space vegetables so they will be safe.
The Chinese government certainly thinks so because they have been cooperating with NASA to produce a new strain of virus-free potatoes. Their scientists hope that in space it may be possible to produce a new crop every 40-50 days instead of one crop a year. So watch out for these special potatoes on the supermarket shelves. Maybe some day you will find them on your dinner table!
32.The scientists chose to grow soybeans in space because ________.
A.scientists know more about soybeans
B.it’s easy to begin agricultural experiment from soybeans

D.the soybeans contain protein needed by the human body
33.The underlined phrase “pave the way” in the third paragraph means ________.
A.to build a new road B.to make things easier

A.astronauts have tried eating some space vegetables
B.space vegetables are like genetically modified crops
C.no new genes are being introduced into space vegetables
D.scientists have found that it’s safe to eat space vegetables

One summer, I went on a four-day desert trip with my family. On the train, I looked out of the window, expecting something surprising to happen on this desert trip. I was very excited all the way, talking about what would happen in the desert with my parents, standing up and looking around.
After what seemed passed quickly, we arrived at the destination, which was the endless desert as far as the eye could see. Everywhere was dull yellow, and there were no trees, and the vastness of the desert shocked each of us.
Before we started our journey, the guide explained the rules to us: We’d better put on sun-protective clothing and hold onto the hiking pole. We had to walk 18 kilometers per day for four days. There were two routes that we could choose from. One was down the hill. There were rivers and vegetation (植被). The road was relatively flat, easy to walk, and it was not so hot. The other route was through the real desert, which was all sand and no water and dust storms often happened. Even before starting the hike, we could feel it blowing into our eyes. We had to go step by step, and our feet could often get stuck in the sand. We needed to arrive at the next destination before 6 pm. There would be a rest area every five kilo-meters, where we could drink water and eat some food. If we really couldn’t persist (坚持), we could quit and take the car. Those who did persist to the end would have a surprise.
Everyone was discussing with excitement after they heard the rules. Many people wanted to fight for the first place. Personally, I wanted to win the surprise as well. Most of the people, including my friends, took the first route, but two adults and one child took the other. Yes, that was my parents and me. I just wanted to break through and challenge myself.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

With their encouragement, I gathered my strength and moved on.
