Discover Copenhagen with kids: top places to see
Some people think that travelling with children is quite difficult. Kids are often too young to understand the point of a visit in some museums. But luckily, there are cities that offer many attractions not only for adults, but also for little tourists. Among these cities, Copenhagen also has its place.
The mysteries of the sea world
In the National Aquarium Denmark, many species of water animals can be seen. Kids will be surely delighted with all the colourful fish, swimming between water plants. It is also an occasion to see the fantastic coral reef (珊瑚礁). When someone is brave enough, he can also see some sharks swimming behind the glass!
Tivoli-amusement for everyone
The first opening of this magical place was in the 19th century. Nowadays it’s an attraction for people of all ages. Beautiful gardens encourage tired tourists as well as local people. Those who seek for some excitements will also have good fun here — several roller coasters guarantee great entertainment. That park looks amazing in the evening, when it is brightly lit with many lights.
Film in a planetarium
People who would like to experience something connected with science and astronomy ought to visit the Tycho Brahe Planetarium. Here the 3D films are being displayed on a screen. Tourists from abroad can use special headphones, so they can listen to the audio-description in English. The visit here can be useful not only for kids, but also for adults.
A monument of Little Mermaid
Children will surely like that statue — especially when parents will tell them the fairy tale about that character. A short visit by that monument is customary, because it is one of the worldwide known symbols of Copenhagen. It is located in the port and depicts a mermaid sitting on a rock. The tale was written by Hans Andersen, who was living in that city for some period of his life.
1. What can kids do in the National Aquarium Denmark?
A. Swim between water plants. B. Touch the fantastic coral reef.
C. Watch colorful fish swimming. D. Play with the sharks bravely.

3. Which is the best choice for Hans Andersen’s fans?
A. The National Aquarium Denmark. B. Beautiful gardens in Tivoli.
C. The Tycho Brahe Planetarium. D. A monument of Little Mermaid.

This morning it was harder for me to get out of bed than usual. Usually, I have nightmares (噩梦) because of the terrible movies I watched the night before, and sometimes spicy (辛辣的) food makes me feel uncomfortable in sleeping. However, last night I turned all night because my anxiety was at an all-time high. I kept thinking about what my first day of high school would be like. What should I wear? What should I put in my schoolbag? I finally fell asleep around 5:45 and my alarm started going off at 6.
I couldn’t let those thoughts cloud my mind. I had to prepare myself for one of the most important days of my life. I packed my things and headed out of the door. My first class wasn’t too bad. I listened to my English teacher discuss the importance of themes, but otherwise, it was a pretty easy-going class.
During lunchtime, I had a pizza and an orange soda. I’m grateful for the food not tasting terrible so I wouldn’t keep thinking about that all day. I still didn’t manage to find any new friends to sit with, but I’m just happy I found a quiet place to stay. It would have been uncomfortable if I had to sit in a noisy classroom to eat lunch, or an empty hallway with some kids walking past and laughing.
Once the last bell rang, I was eager to get home and tell Charlie, my childhood friend, how my day went at a new school. I was just excited to speak to a familiar voice and share my feelings of the whole day. I wondered how his day went at his new school as well. I got on the same train line that I took to school and headed back home.
Speaking to Charlie on the phone, I found out he made many new friends today. Once I got off the phone, I threw myself on the bed with a long sigh (叹气). Although I’d experience this again tomorrow, I’m glad I got through my first day at school.
4. What made the author fail to fall asleep last night?
A. Anxiety of preparations for school. B. Noise of the alarm that kept ringing.
C. Discomfort brought by spicy food. D. Nightmares caused by a terrible movie.
5. What can we infer from the third paragraph?
A. The author disliked eating in a noisy place. B. The author was quite satisfied with the food.
C. The author made some new friends at school. D. The author found it difficult to find a quiet place.
6. Why was the author eager to go home after school?
A. To play with his childhood friend. B. To know how Charlie’s first day went.
C. To catch the train line she took to school. D. To share feelings about school with Charlie.
7. How did the author feel after talking to Charlie?
A. Surprised. B. Shocked. C. Relaxed. D. Delighted.
C
Travel is one of the most exciting experiences a human being can have. Imagine how Italian traveler Marco Polo must have felt when he found himself on Chinese soil, seeing a way of life quite different from anything he’d seen before.
And how great must it have been to listen to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia? His brain must have been packed with everything he’d seen and heard, leading to the founding of the Silk Road.
Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. They perhaps know what to expect before they travel. That’s why the best travel is when it’s for the first time. Imagine a person who has always wanted to travel to the United States. Of course, they’ve probably seen the Statue of Liberty a thousand times on TV, and the White House, and all the other famous sights. But none of that would compare to the excitement of looking out of the window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view.
Although travel is often just for recreation, it’s also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.
We’re learning every day: new words in a new language, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not the classroom. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way.
8. The author uses Marco Polo and Zhang Qian as examples to ___________.
A. explain how the Silk Road was founded B. present travel as an amazing experience
C. show how the way people travel has changed D. describe important cultural exchanges in history
9. By saying “the best travel is when it’s for the first time”, the author means ___________.
A. one’s first trip is usually the most challenging B. no other trip is better than one’s first trip
C. there is always much to learn on one’s first trip D. people usually make better preparations for their first trip
10. The underlined word “recreation” in Paragraph 4 probably means ___________.
A. fun B. risk C. learning D. knowledge
11. According to the last two paragraphs, the author believes that ___________.
A. traveling should be included in formal education
B. traveling improves people’s confidence in their lifestyle
C. foreign journeys can enrich people’s knowledge of the world
D. foreign ways of life are better than our own way of life at home
D
The English language is changing, and you are responsible! Whether we consider changes in grammar, spelling, pronunciation, or the very vocabulary of the language, you have played your part and continue to do so.
When we first learned basic grammar and spelling, perhaps in elementary school, we might have gotten the impression that these things were sacred (神圣的). The rules that apply to such things might have been presented as unchanging and unchangeable. While this way might be helpful for teaching children, it is far from accurate (准确的).
The English language, like many others, is a living, growing, ever-evolving (演变) thing. Like it or not, you are involved (参与) in this change. These changes take many forms. Grammar and spelling have changed greatly over the years and centuries, with the spelling differences in different countries today a reflection of this. While the language of a thousand years ago might be called English, most of us would hardly recognize it today as the same language.
The first involves changes in the pronunciation of words. Many are familiar with the differences between the British and American ways of pronouncing certain words. In addition to these differences, the pronunciation of many words has changed over the years because of how you have decided to pronounce them. For example, consider the word “err.” The traditional pronunciation of this word rhymes with the word “her.” Older dictionaries show this to be the primary or only pronunciation. However, in recent years, more and more people have been pronouncing it so that it sounds like “air.” Another change in the language involves the addition and removal of words. The makers of dictionaries decide which words deserve to be officially adopted as part of the English language. Through the centuries, many words have come from other languages. In fact, English has probably done this more than any other language in the world, which is why spelling and pronunciation rules for English have so many exceptions.
Of course, many slang words (俚语) have been just short-lived fashions that have died out quickly. Others, though, have been adopted by mainstream society and become respectable, as have many technical terms. So then remember, the next time you repeat the newest expression to hit the street, or make up your own words, you may be contributing to the future of the English language.
12. When we begin to learn English, we think ___________.
A. it is interesting to pick up a new language B. English rules are wrongly presented in fact
C. grammar and spelling rules are unchangeable D. only adults have the ability to affect a language
13. From paragraph 3 we can know that ___________.
A. we can change the English language B. many languages are changing over years
C. English has changed little in the past 1,000 years D. there were main changes in grammar and pronunciation
14. Why is the pronunciation of words changing?
A. people choose the way to pronounce them B. those words are too difficult to pronounce
C. the spellings of words change D. technology develops greatly in modern society
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Foreign words involved in English. B. Slang words reshape the English world.
C. English language is changeable. D. British speaks differently from Americans.

Four habits to live a happier life
Having a happier life is something we all always struggle for, and being happy includes so many aspects — mental, physical and spiritual — of our lives. One of the key principles of having a happier life is to always do things that bring us happiness. 16
Consider the following habits to improve your life and make it as happy as you possibly can.
Praise others.
Be kind to others, like praising them. 17 Don’t be afraid to tell people how great they look, or how awesome their smile is. It’ll do them good, and do you good too!
Focus on the present moment.
Take some time every day to focus on the present moment. 18 Try not to think about negative past experiences and hug the time you have now. You’ll soon find that even the slightest thing that you do at this moment can bring about happiness in the future.
Learn to control your emotions.
19 And it’s definitely not worth the emotions. Don’t compromise on your happiness just because someone is trying to pick a fight. Just let it go (不要理会) and be happier.
20
Just before you go to bed, write down at least one wonderful thing that happened. It might be something as small as a child’s laugh or something as huge as a million-dollar deal. Whatever it is, be grateful for that day because it will never come again.
A. End each day with thankfulness.
B. Of course, everyone loves to be happy.
C. It is the only certain time we have in our life.
D. It can make people happy and give them confidence.
E. It’s not worth the argument when your partner is testing your patience.
