Suddenly, there came a car. It was going very fast. When the driver saw the boy in his way, he braked (刹车) hard. But it was too late. The small boy was lying on the street without moving. To everyone’s surprise, the car didn’t stop. It drove away quickly.

People ran to the boy. There was a cut on the boy’s head and he lost a lot of blood. The coffee shop owner telephoned the police. Soon an ambulance (救护车) arrived and took the boy to the hospital. At 6:30 pm, the police arrived and started questioning people. About half an hour later, they asked me to go to the police station because I saw everything. I gave them all the information I knew because I really wanted them to catch the driver. I didn’t leave the police station until 8:00 pm. After that I went home because I didn’t want to talk to anyone.

A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it every day. He climbed to the top of the tree, ate the apples, have a rest under it…. He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. As time went by, the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree. One day, the boy came back to the tree and looked sad. He told the tree that he wanted some toys but he didn't have money. The tree asked him to pick all the apples and sell them. The boy did it and left happily.

Several years later, the boy returned and the tree was so excited. The boy said he needed a house for his family. The tree asked him to cut off his branches (树枝) to build the house. The boy did as the tree told him. But the boy didn't appear after that. The tree was again lonely and sad. One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted, He said he needed a boat to go sailing and relax himself. The tree told to use the trunk (树干) to build a boat. The boy did so. He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.

Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. "I really want to give you something, but the only thing left is my dying roots ()," the tree said with tears. "I just need a place to rest. I am tired after all these years," the boy replied. "Good! Old tree roots are the best place to rest." The boy sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears…

Being able to communicate effectively (有效地) is perhaps the most important of all life skills. It is what helps us to pass information to other people, and to understand what is said to us. You only have to watch a baby listening to his mother and trying to repeat the sounds that she makes to understand how important the communicating is.

Communication, at its simplest, is the act of transferring(转移)information from one place to another. It may be vocal(using voice), written(using printed or digital media such as books, magazines, websites or emails), visual(using logos or maps) or non-verbal(using body language or gestures). In fact, it is often a combination (结合体) of several of these.

Communication skills may take a lifetime to learn. There are, however, many things that you can do easily to improve your communication skills and make sure that you are able to give and receive information effectively.

Good communication skills can improve the way that you deal with your life, smoothing your way in your relationships with others. Poor communication skills, on the other hand, can break relationships from business to personal, and make your life harder.

Some people seem to understand how to communicate without even trying. They are able to change their language, tone and message to their listeners, and get their point across quickly. They are also able to pick up the messages sent to them rapidly, understanding both what is said, and what has not been said.

    66. Being able to communicate effectively means ________.

    A. understanding information from others           B. using information in different ways

    C. passing and receiving information correctly       D. giving information to others

    67. Which of the following is Not mentioned about ways of communication?

    A. Using voice and digital media.                   B. Using body language and gestures.

    C. Using logos and maps.                       D. Using personal information.

    68. From this passage, we can learn that ________.

    A. communication skills isn’t important

    B. communication skills may take a short time to learn

    C. some people know some communication skills without even trying

    D. poor communication skills cannot break relationships

    69. The main idea of this passage is ________.

    A. trying to be a good listener is very important

    B. learning to use body language and gestures is important

    C. being able to communicate effectively is important

    D. using more ways of communication skills is important

    E

Traffic lights are red, yellow and green. They are very important signals(信号). Traffic lights are usually placed at busy street corners to help control traffic. Sometimes, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. Most young children are taught what each of the colored lights means, so everybody can stay safe.

The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside railway tracks(轨道). The color red was used to mean “stop” because it warned people of danger. A red light was also the easiest color to see from a distance. Train drivers could see the red “stop” light ahead and had enough time to slow down and stop their trains. A green light was used to mean “take care” and a white light meant “go”.

However, there were many dangerous accidents on the train tracks. Some train drivers sometimes thought a star shining in the night sky was a white light that meant “go” by mistake. So the signals were exchanged. The “go” light was changed to green and the “take care” light was changed to white.

During these times, people travelled by train or in carts pulled by horses. Years later, when cars were built, people began to drive them because they could travel much faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear and many people were hurt crossing the roads. Yellow warning signs had to be placed beside the roads to remind drivers to take care and allow people to cross safely.

Today, towns and cities all over the world have traffic lights. Red and green lights match the signals used on the railways. Yellow lights are easy to see, so they are used to warn drivers that they should slow down and prepare to stop.

    70. Why was the color red used to mean “stop”?

    A. It reminded people of traffic rules.             B. It helped trains run smoothly.

    C. It gave people a warning of danger.             D. It was the first color people thought of.

    71. In which order did the “take care” light develop?

a.A white light           b.A green light.         c.A yellow light.

    A. a-c-b               B. b-c-a              C. a-b-c               D. b-a-c

    72. What is the passage mainly about?

    A. The advantages of traffic lights.                 B. The history of traffic lights.

    C. The importance of traffic lights.                 D. The meanings of traffic lights.

In China most children are getting plenty of homework, because it is believed that the more homework children do, the better they will perform in study. But one primary school in northeast China has done just the opposite for the past 37 years.

That is Shenyang Railway No. 5 Primary School. Although its students don’t have to do homework, they are still getting high-standard education. This requires teachers to prepare their lesson plans well, so that students can learn as much as they can during class time.

Also, students from all grades will have a 15-minute mini class in the afternoon (most classes in China are 40 minutes), during which they can focus on developing some abilities such as memorizing, listening.

However, not having homework doesn’t mean that students do nothing after school. In fact, they are encouraged to read books at night, or watch the news. They can also find and develop their interests by taking the more than 60 clubs at school, including technology, arts, sports, and others.

    73. What are teachers required to do to make sure students still get high-standard education?(不超过10词)
