In the tiny village of Angelica, New York, the post office is more than a place to get mail or send packages. There you’ll find the heart of this lovely community. It’s where villagers meet and greet friends.
When Angelica’s post office was threatened with being closed in the 1980s, a villager, Pat, came up with a plan to save it. “At Christmas time I would hear on the news about towns named Snow or Bethlehem having celebrations,” says Pat, “Why couldn’t we do the same thing with Angelica?”
Pat, who is an artist, created a postal cancellation (邮戳)design featuring an Angelica angel. She drew her angels in a traditional fashion and submitted her suggestion to the U.S. Postal Service. Once approved, the drawing was carved into a cancellation stamp that could be used for one day only. The postmistress (女邮局局长) then had another idea to make the day even more special calling the post office Angel Station.
The large increase in mail amount saved Angelica’s post office from being closed and keeps the doors open today.
Now it’s tradition that on the first Friday in December, people come to Angelica to mail their Christmas cards. Each year the amount of mail going through the Angelica Post Office increases during late November and early December. Stamp collectors from around the world have accepted the Angel Station cancellation, some sending mail from as far away as France.
Because the stamp is destroyed each season, Pat draws a new angel that conveys season’s greetings from Angel Station every year. Post offices may close in other parts of the country, but this tiny one continues.
24.What did Pat do to save the post office?
A.She invented a new cancellation. B.She hosted Christmas celebrations.

A.It was completely closed in the 1980s. B.It is also the centre of local social life.
C.Its name has been changed many times. D.Its stamp remains the same each season.
27.What can the underlined word “submitted” be most likely replaced by?
A.presented B.applied C.accepted D.released

Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?
Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbooks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book forever and read it many times.
Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全书), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books, science textbook, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Then from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets.
28.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.TV programs are a chief provider of knowledge
B.cinemas are the best choice in getting information
C.reading is a cheap way of learning and having fun
D.newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself
29.What does the sentences “Television has not killed reading, however ” underlined in the second paragraph suggest?
A.People only need reading, though. B.Reading is still necessary today.
C.Reading is more fun than television. D.Watching television doesn’t help reading.
30.Which of the following is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?
A.Types of books. B.Kinds of dictionaries.
C.Lists of history books D.Collections of stories and poems.
31.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Fewer and fewer people will buy books. B.A good dictionary should be kept in every home.
C.Books with hard covers sell better than paperbooks. D.More people like TV programs about famous men.
D
Egypt is home to more than 100 pyramids, including the landmark Giza pyramid which is the last-standing ancient wonder of the world. It is an example of the wisdom and skills of ancient development. The Great Pyramid of Giza has stood tall since the 26th Century BC, and took 27years to build, with around 2.3 million blocks of stone weighing 6 million tons.
Giza is actually made up of three pyramids, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure—each one is named after a pharaoh (法老). Now, scientists are using High Energy Physics to scan (扫描) the Khufu structure at Giza. The new technology scans deeper into the pyramid than before, and then maps its inside structure.
What we see now is only the central structure of the Great Pyramid. Although the pyramid has been studied closely for centuries, there are two mysterious holes that have kept archaeologists puzzled.
One is around 98 feet long and 20 feet high and could be one large space or several rooms, according to scans of the pyramid, while the other is much smaller, just beyond the north face of the pyramid. Archaeologists are not sure what either space functioned as; the most exciting possibility is that the larger space is the hidden room to keep Khufu, who governed from around 2551BC to 2528BC.
Finding holes in pyramids isn’t unusual, though. Nowadays, though, we have the technology to find out, compared to days gone by when examinations would have to blow up the pyramids to explore.
“Since the instruments that are used are very large, they cannot be placed inside the pyramid, and therefore our approach is to put them outside and meticulously move them along the base. In this way, we can build up the required data set,” the team wrote in the paper. The technology is so precise that scientists may be able to even tell objects within the hole.
32.What can be learned about the Great Pyramid of Giza?
A.It is named after a pharaoh. B.It is the largest ancient wonder of the world.
C.It was built with around 6 million stones. D.It has a history of more than 4, 000 years.
33.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The owner of the pyramid. B.The two mysterious holes.
C.The advanced research technology. D.The central structure of the Giza pyramid.
34.What does the author think of the examinations in the days gone by?
A.They caused damage. B.They took long to carry out.
C.They used no equipment. D.They explained almost all puzzles.
35.What does the underlined word “meticulously” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Carefully. B.Quickly. C.Formally. D.Secretly.

Accept Tricky Feelings
Imagine that you only felt so-called positive feelings, like excitement, joy and safety. ____36____. Being human means we experience various emotions, even painful or uncomfortable ones. Accepting them is important and can improve your well-being.
Do you notice uncomfortable feelings?
When you accept that difficult emotions are normal and temporary, you’re often able to cope with them. Psychologists have found that people who allow themselves to feel a range of emotions, including painful ones, are often more at peace than people who try to avoid or push uncomfortable feelings away._____37_____
Does that mean all behaviour is OK?
If you allow yourself to feel angry, for example, that doesn’t mean you can throw things around or behave unkindly. Anita Garai, a well-being teacher and author of Being With Our Feelings, says that if we allow ourselves to feel painful emotions, including anger, it’s less likely these feelings will boil over and result in unpleasant actions. “____38____,” she says. “By listening to them, you can learn more about your needs and choose the best way to respond.”
____39____?
Garai suggests the first step is to notice and examine the uncomfortable feeling in your body. “Where in your body can you feel it? Is it still or moving? Can you describe the movement?” she says. It may be that the feeling reminds you of a colour, shape, sound or texture. “By paying attention to the feeling in this way, it’s less likely that you’ll ignore it,” explains Garai. ____40____. Many people find it comforting and inspiring to read about characters who accept, manage and overcome tricky emotions.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was Friday, and I was at my daughter’s place in Manhattan. My husband and I had gone out for breakfast with my daughter and son-in-law and their child. After breakfast, we took a taxi to Central Park. The plan was to take my 2-year-old grandson on his first horse and buggy(小马车)ride, pick up our bags from my daughter’s house and drive to my friend’s home in Flatbush, Brooklyn, for a visit.
The horse ride went well, and we all had a great time. My grandson was filled with joy and excitement all the time. We arrived back at my daughter’s apartment, picked up our bags and then I said to my husband, Moishe, “Where is your phone?” Usually, I will check everything before we leave a taxi since things can fall out, but this time, I guess I didn’t, and we could not seem to find it.
Maybe we left it in the buggy, or it might have fallen out in the taxi? I wondered. Or perhaps we left it in the restaurant at breakfast? I was in a state of panic, wondering what the one with the phone could do with it. Moishe was evidently at a loss as to what to do. My sensible son-in-law, Leon, had a clever idea of calling the phone to see if anyone would answer it.
With butterflies in my stomach, I watched as Leon dialed and got through. He turned the loudspeaker of his phone on so that we all could hear but what we heard was a lady’s poor, broken English. The person on the other side of the phone obviously had difficulty communicating with Leon. Leon was very patient and was speaking very slowly but I could see that he didn’t get much useful information before he had to hang up.
After some discussion, we decided to send a text message to the lost phone saying, “We will pay money to get our phone back, please tell us where you are.” This idea worked out well. Soon we got a reply message saying “119 Ocean Parkway, Mrs. Hichens”.
注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右;
