The sun bear is the smallest bear, with a body length of 48 to 60 inches. Sun bears prefer rainforests. They are believed to sleep in trees. The sun bear is not a big meat-eater. The sun bear often uses its long tongue(舌头) for eating termites(白蚁).
The name sun bear comes from the pale circle on its chest (胸膛). They have short, black fur with a golden or white horseshoe shape on their chest. It is also known as “honey bear” because of its love for the sweet food.
With only 600 to 1,000 left in the wild in the rainforests of South Asia, it is in danger.
People are cutting down trees and using the land for farming. So the rainforests where the sun bear lives are becoming smaller and smaller. Sun bears are killed because their meat is delicious and parts of their body can be made into traditional medicine. People also like to keep young sun bears as pets and kill the mother bears. (2022秋·吉林长春·八年级统考期末)When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs (树枝) one day. Her teacher gave these twigs to the students to grow. My husband and I grew them outside our house with my daughter. However, three of them died. Only one still grew but it didn’t grow very tall.
A few years later, I saw the only twig started to die. The lower branches (树枝) became poor. Only the top was still green. I did my best to save it, but it didn’t work.
Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I wondered if it would be better to just cut it down. However, I saw something moving on the branches. It was a robin (知更鸟) building its home there! I was surprised when I looked at it. I thought maybe this tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or beautiful, but it still gave a bird a home. It made me know that nothing is meaningless. It doesn’t matter if we are young or old. Until we die, we still have things to do, love to give, and joy to share.

The Globe Theater(环球剧场)in London is very famous because people can see most of William Shakespeare’s plays there. It has a history of more than four hundred years. At that time, the theater was an open air playhouse. Shakespeare wrote many plays for it. There were three floors in the theater. It had about 3,000 seats. And there was a pit for poor people. The seats in the three-floor building were for rich people because the tickets were much more expensive.
In 1613, a fire damaged(毁坏)the theater. Later people repaired(修复)it for some time. In 1977, a new globe theater came out. It is the same size as the old one. There is also a shopping center there. You can do some shopping before the plays start or after the plays end.

(2022春·江苏淮安·八年级校考期末)A few years ago, my husband and I were on an island for a weekend with our 3- and 4-year-old daughters. As we went back and thought about what to do next, our girls jumped in and told us exactly what they wanted to do. “We want to go to the butterfly museum,” said Ariella and Eliana.
As soon as we walked into the main area of the museum, we saw thousands or beautiful butterflies all flapping (拍打) their coloful wings.
My girls were jumping up and down and I knew we had made the right decision to come to the museum. They were having so much fun. I turned to our museum tour guide because I was curious and asked, “How long do butterflies live?” She said, “About ten days.” “What can butterflies do in ten days?” I asked. The guide sopped, looked at me and said, “They make the world a more beautiful place.” “Wow,” I said, “I never thought about butterflies like that. Thank you.”
After we said goodbye, I couldn’t stop thinking about what the guide had said. She was right. We all have something to offer the world with the time we have. When we focus our gifts on taking care of each other every day, we can make a difference.
Appreciate (感激) the influence you can have on your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Like a butterfly, you have your own way of making the world a little better for everyone.

(2022春·吉林长春·八年级统考期末)In October 2021, I left New York to study alone in London. My parents didn’t have enough money for my school, so I found three part-time jobs to pay for my studies. I worked early mornings and late nights, so I was tired all the time. After two week’s hard work, I got a cold and had a very high fever. Because I was new in London, I had no friends. Besides(而且), I was too shy to talk with others and ask others for help. After sleeping on the bed for two days, I went out to get some food in a small shop nearby.
I picked some food and gave it to the shopkeeper, who asked me, “You look terrible, my boy! You are not feeling well, right?” I said yes in a low voice.
She pointed at the food I was buying and offered, “I can make you a sandwich, so you don’t have to do it yourself.” I nodded(点头)without saying a word.
She went into the back room and came again with a bowl of hot soup and a sandwich.
“The soup will warm you up,” she said with a friendly smile.
What really warmed me up was not the soup. It was her smile that told me she cared me.
And the shopkeeper teaches me about the power(力量)of being kind.
From that day on, I did not let shyness stop me from talking with and being kind to others.
Now I work in a hospital in Africa. I love my work and people around me. I always bring my smile and kindness to them.

(2022秋·吉林·八年级校联考期末)There are about 40, 000 different kinds of jobs in the world. Choosing the right one is difficult. “Finding a job” is not the same as “choosing a job”. Many young people end up in a job. The reason is that the job is not suitable for them. Here are a few steps to help you think about the jobs that you might enjoy doing after school or university.
First, it is important to know what kind of person you are, which special qualities (品质) make you different from everyone else and what you are interested in. There is a difference between an interest and a skill. If you like art and enjoy looking at pictures, that is an interest. But if you can draw a horse that looks like a horse instead of a big dog, that is a skill.
Then, ask yourself this question. Which are your best skills, skills with people, skills with information or skills of dealing with (处理) things?
The next step is to find out as many different kinds of jobs as possible. Go to the library and read books, magazines and newspapers.
Finally, trust your own ideas. It is your own life, so find something that you enjoy doing.

A Bag of Cookies
Last year I got a part-time job working at the coffee shop near my home. I thought that the job would be easy, pleasant and relaxing. I pictured myself pouring (倒) the best coffees, making delicious cookies, and becoming close friends with the customers.
But I never thought about the women who complained the coffee was much too creamy, or the men who wanted their iced coffees remade again and again. There was always too much sugar, too little ice, and not enough milk. I couldn’t seem to please anyone, so I was a little sad.
One rainy afternoon, one of my customers, Hank, came in and looked unhappy. I asked what his trouble was. He just said he wanted to go back home and threw himself into bed. I knew truly how he felt. Before he left, I handed him a bag with his iced coffee. He looked at me questioningly because he hadn’t ordered anything but the coffee. He opened the bag and saw his favorite cookies.
“It’s on me, my treat (请客)” I told him. “Have a nice day.”
The next day the rain was still pouring down from the sky. I spent my afternoon working with the open windows, handing people their orders and waiting as they slowly paid for. I tried to smile as the customers complained about the weather, but it was difficult.
At about ten o’clock that morning, Hank drove up to the window. But he didn’t order anything, he handed me some flowers and a little note. With a friendly wave he drove away. I read the note:
Christine,
Thanks for being so sweet, kind and thoughtful yesterday. I was really moved by you. Please don’t change your ways because I truly believe that you can make the world warm. Have a great day! Hank
As time went on, I did meet more complaining customers. But anytime I was down, I thought of Hank and his kindness. Then I would smile, hold my head up high and ask politely, “How can I help you?”

Chen Jianguo dreamed of having his own business in Beijing about 16 years ago when he graduated (毕业) from senior high school. I wrote my first poem(诗)when I was 5 years old. It was for Mother’s Day. At that time, I was more worried about making rhymes(韵律)than making sense. My poem went like this: “Mother’s Day is something special. And then you will find a wishing well(许愿池)!”
The poem was not my best work, but my mom kept it—just like she kept every other piece of writing and artwork I ever made. She also kept my baby clothes, a piece of hair from my first haircut and embarrassing(窘态的)pictures of my sister and me as little kids. Sometimes we feel like our mom runs a museum of our lives, and she’s the only visitor.
But it feels nice to be loved like that. Who else would care enough to keep all of my terrible drawings and silly poems? Only my mother.
On Mother’s Day when I was little, I used to bring my mom breakfast in bed, make her a card, give her kisses and hugs and tell her I loved her.
I don’t get to see my mother very much these days. Now I live with my husband in Shanghai, China, 11, 200km from my parents’ home in the US. I’m too far away to bring my mom breakfast in bed or give her a hug. But when Mother’s Day comes, I’ll call my mom from China. Over the phone, I’ll tell her I love her, and that she’s the best mom in the World. No matter how far away I go, she’s always in my heart.

Now, calling someone is an art too. First, give a call to your friend, and then begin the talk by asking them about their life and family. Ask them about their schedules on the day of the party . If they say they are free, you can ask them to the party derectly (直接地). If the friend is not free, then ask him to try to find time for your party.
If you’re going to have a big party, and need to ask lots of people to your party, you must decide how many people you want at your party. How much do you know about Chicago(芝加哥) in the United States? You might think it’s a big city. And it is! Chicago is actually the third most populous(人口众多的) city in the US, right after New York City and Los Angeles.
“The Windy City” is Chicago’s most famous nickname. It is for a good reason. The city lies right next to Lake Michigan and heavy winds blow through the city.
Chicago is very well known for its art and culture. The Art Institute of Chicago is the No.1 place to visit in the city. It is not only a school, but also a world-class art museum.
If you don’t feel like visiting a museum, your best choice is to visit Millennium Park. This park holds the famous Cloud Gate which looks like a big shining bean. Many people enjoy taking photos there.
You will have lots of fun things to do in Chicago. If you enjoy heights, go to visit the famous Willis Tower! You can go up to the top of it and step out onto a glass box. You’ll be standing over the city, but don’t worry it’s completely safe. Doesn’t Chicago sound like a fun city?
